“谣言”的意思是“没有事实根据的消息”。英语可以译为 rumour。例如：1. 这个谣言结果证明是假的。The rumour has proved to be false.
“谣传说”，英语可以译为 to be rumoured, Rumour has it that, There is a rumour that。例如：2. 谣传说约翰患癌症了。1) John was rumoured to be suffering from cancer.2) It was rumoured that John was suffering from cancer.3) Rumour has it that John was suffering from cancer.“造谣”，英语可以译为 to start/create a rumour。例如：3. 这个网络推手因编造和传播关于几名中国名人的谣言而被起诉。The Internet pusher was accused of creating and spreading rumours about several Chinese celebrities.
“传谣”或“(谣言)流传”，英语可以译为 to spread/circulate a rumour, to go/float about, to percolate。例如：4. 这名男子因传播一个骑摩托车的人闯红灯被警方击毙的谣言而被拘留。The man was detained for spreading rumours that a motorcyclist was shot dead by police for running a red light.5. 这个谣言正在流传。这个谣言中没有一点真实性。The rumour is floating about. There isn't an atom of truth in the rumour.
“辟谣”，英语可以译为 to deny/refute/dispel a rumour。例如：6. 这名地方政府官员辟谣说这次地震不是由发电站引起的。The local government official denied the rumour that the earthquake had been caused by the power station.
“攻破谣言”，英语可以译为 to end a rumour。例如：7. 这位首相在记者招待会上亲自露面，攻破了他已死亡的谣言。The Prime Minister's appearance in the flesh at the press conference ended the rumour about his death.
“造谣者”，英语可以译为 rumourmonger。例如：8. 这个造谣者以诽谤几位文化名人的罪名被判处三年徒刑。The rumourmonger was sentenced to imprisonment for three years on the charge of slandering some cultural celebrities.
