Heavy metal fans are often considered antisocial and aggre ssive, while those who prefer slow love songsmight be though t of as soppy, and classical musicfans are seen as pretentious .

While many would probably deny these stereotypeshold any w eight, the links between music andpersonality are being seriou sly investigated by teamsof psychologists.

One such expert from Cambridge has now created aquiz to put these theories to the test - and you cantake it to find out wha t your music personality is.

David Greenberg, a psychologist at the University of Cambrid ge, is one of the researchersworking on the 'Musical Universe' project.

Mr Greenberg has quizzed thousands of people, first giving the m a written test to analyse theirpersonalities and then finding out what types of music they prefer.

Mr Greenberg said: 'We've found that musical preferences are linked to three brain types.'

He said those who have a well-developed ability to understan d thoughts and feelings inthemselves and others, so-called 'e mpathisers', prefer mellow music that evokes deep emotion. People who can identify patterns and systems, known as 'syst emisers', prefer intense musicthat forms complex sounds. The theory, he explained, is that empathisers are interested in music's emotional qualities andhow it makes them feel, wher eas systemisers are more intrigued by its structural qualities. Meanwhile, people who like both mellow music and intense m usic tend to have similar scores inempathising and systemisin g tests, indicating a 'balanced' thinking style.

This is not the first time psychologists have looked into the wa y music taste and personalitymix.

The Short Test Of Musical Preferences (Stomp) is a test that as sesses preferences in musicgenres, and was first introduced in 2003 by scientists in Austin, Texas.

The researchers performed analysis similar to Mr Greenberg's and found that people whoprefer reflective and complex mu sic like blues, classical and jazz score highly on openness toe xperience, and see themselves as politically liberal, intellige nt and not very athletic.

They found that fans of upbeat music like country, pop and so undtracks, on the other hand,tended to have low scores for op enness to experience and intelligence.

They were more likely to be agreeable, extroverted and con scientious and see themselves as attractive, wealthy, athleti c and politically conservative.

Finally, people who prefer energetic and rhythmic music wer e also extroverted, agreeable,attractive and athletic, but t hey did not share the political inclination, wealth or lower inte lligence scores as lovers of upbeat music.
