In Tibetan areas we often see wind-horse flags. They are long

cloths on which pictures of horses and scriptures(经文) are printed.

People often put these flags on top of houses, or leave them where a

These five colors symbolize the five elements that form the world:

Each time I see a balloon, my mind flies back to a memory of when I was a six-year-old girl. It was a rainy Sunday and my father had recently died. I asked my mom if Dad had gone to heaven. “Yes, honey. Of course,” she said.

She read it over, and a smile crossed her face.

When a spider wants to travel long distances, it simply casts out a strand of silk, captures the

breeze and “flies” away. They are known to travel hundreds of miles, even ending up on islands in the middle of the ocean.

Now scientist have figured out how this mode of transportation works. They also discovered that spiders have very little idea of where they will be flown when caught in a heavy wind.

The new study points out that the 20-year-old model for spider “ballooning”--- which assumed that spider silk is stiff and straight and spiders just hang at the bottom --- was not perfect especially when applied in moving, violent air.

Researchers at Rothamsted Research redesigned the model to allow for flexibility(弹性) in the spider’s dragline, its most sturdy(强韧的) line of silk used for moving about and catching prey. When the dragline is caught in a turbulent breeze, it becomes highly twisted catching air like an open parachute and sending the spider on an unknown journey.

The spider has completely no control of where or how far it travels by this means, said Andy Reynolds, a Rothamsted Research scientist. This is how a “ballooning” spider can end up in the ocean hundreds of miles from shore.

In more calm breezes, though, spiders can drift just a few yards to invade new territory or surprise prey.

Although the new model better explains how spiders “fly”, the team plans to observe spiders in violent airflow inside wind tunnels to improve the model. Better understanding how spiders travel long distances could help scientists control farmland pests.

“Spiders are key enemies of insects and can alleviate(减缓) the need for farmers to spray large quantities of pesticide(农药).” Reynolds said. “But they can only perform this function in the mathematical model we can start to examine how human activity, such as farming, affects the dispersal(散布) of spider populations.”

It was when I was attending high school that I first read Asimov’s stories. At the time, a few SF magazines began to introduce this author and translate a few pieces from his “Robot Series”. Of Asimov’s works, the one that left the deepest impression on me was Pebble in the Sky. This novel directly influenced my early SF writing.

Asimov was one of the leading writers of Western science fiction’s Golden Age, so although his writing may not have a direct influence on writers of today, his underlying(潜在的) influence on many levels is undeniable --- the famous Three Laws of Robotics, and many classic writing techniques, for example. Of course, his influence is related to the atmosphere that existed in the Golden Age; a science fiction writer today has a hard time reaching that level no matter how outstanding he or she is. Asimov’s novels are marked by a fully integrated logical system, and his stories are a pleasure to read --- this is the reason his novels still attract readers today. Naturally, Western science fiction has few people these days who follow Asimov’s creative methods; instead they are closely connected to mainstream artistic trends, employing large amounts of postmodern techniques. This type of science fiction has a hard time blossoming on Chinese soil. The majority of Chinese SF readers would rather read the classic works of Asimov. This is an important question that faces today’s Chinese science fiction writers.

Compared with the “Robot Series”, Asimov’s “Foundation Series” is a little less well-known in China. This is mostly due to the large influence of the Three Laws, and moreover, the Foundation novels have never been completely introduced here. In fact, the “Foundation Series”creates an entire world, even grander than that of the “Robot Series”; this science fiction epic(史诗) had a direct influence on later Western science fiction, the most famous example being Star Wars.
