A four-year-old girl is wowing (博得……称赞) the New Y ork art world with paintings that are drawing comparisons with Jackson Pollock and Wasaily Kandinsky. Marla Olmstead, from Binghampton, in New Y ork state, has been painting since just before she was two years old.

Using brushes, spatulas, her fingers and even ketchup bottles, she is creating canvases of six by six foot. The prodigy (神童) has already sold about 25 paintings, raising $ 40,000 and a new exhibition opens this week.

Father Mark, speaking to reporters while on a trip to New Y ork city to do television interviews, said, ―She does her own thing, she uses a lot of paint but is oblivious (不在意) to the whole thing.‖ He said she had first started painting shortly before her second birthday as her father tried to stop her distracting him from his own amateur art.

―She went at it with all colors. At first she directed me, and then it evolved to the canvas. I’m her assistant, I hand her the brushes. She doesn’t appreciate that most artists have to wait longer to have an assist ant,‖ he joked.

Gallery owner Anthony Brunelli said of 10 pieces about to go on show, six were already sold, and that the remaining four could fetch between $8000 ~ 10,000. He said Marl a’s work was unbelievable for a child. ―Her paintings have bright colors. They’re very expressive in the way the paint is applied.‖

People will soon cool their homes with power from the burning desert sun. Deserts are becoming hot spots for solar thermal (热的) power in which futuristic troughs (低谷期) pay more attention to the sun’s rays and create steam to run power-producing turbines (涡轮机) at power plants.

Tiny experimental plants built in the 1980s in California ran into problems when energy prices dropped. But as oil, natural gas and electricity costs soar, companies are racing to build commercial solar thermal plants that are the size of power plants.

Limits on emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels have also promoted the new technology. Utah-based International Automated Systems Inc. signed an agreement to build a $150 million, 100-megawatt power plant for Solar Renewable Energy in Nevada. And North Carolina-based Solargenix will break ground on a 64 MW, $100 million solar thermal plant called Nevada Solar One.

Currently, all the types of solar energy provide only about 1 percent of U.S. power. One problem is price. Solar thermal at present costs about 12 to 15 cents per kilowatt hour, Westerholt said, compared with natural gas power which costs 10 cents per KWH. But as production grows,

Solar thermal is expensive compared with wind energy and fuels. But it does have advantages. Power from the desert sun is more reliable than wind power during the day. And unlike fuels, it has no greenhouse gases.

And solar thermal is growing globally. A white paper says that by 2040 solar power could satisfy more than 5 percent of the world’s electricity demand. The best places for it are Australia, the United States, Spain, the Middle East and North Africa, which could export power from the sun to Europe on high-tech power lines.

The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, and the foreigner who learns a new language — all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may ―fail‖ at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more changes and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

Passage 1

Environmental protection was stressed in Kanas, a growing tourist destination in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is famous for its attractive scenery and its ―lake monster‖.

―All of the hotels and restaurants will withdraw from the scenic site to 30 kilometers away,‖said Jin Liquan, an official of the Kanas Environment and Tourism Bureau.

The activity aims to protect the environment of Kanas. Meanwhile, construction of environment facilities inc luding sewage (污水) and rubbish treatment plants will be completely soon.

According to Mao Dacheng, chief of Altay Prefecture where Kanas is located, the government has invested 1 billion yuan on environment facilities. ―Education for tourist is also important,‖ he said. An education center is being created to provide information on how to protect the environment in Kanas. But he said that the government would not interfere with the lives of traditional residents in Kanas.

It is expected that Kanas will receive more than 500,000 tourists this year, 4,000 more than last year.

―However, there are still few overseas visitors,‖he said. Statistic showed that only two percent of the total number of tourists are foreigners. ―This is partly because the transportation facilities are still not convenient enough,‖Mao said. Currently, there is only one highway connecting Kanas,

―Upon request from tourists, construction of an airport will start this month and will be completed by the end of next year,‖ the official said.

A railway line connecting Kuitun and Altay will also be open to traffic in 2008 to make it possible travel to Kanas by train, which will probably bring in more tourists.

Passage2

The local university blood center had a blood drive today at the Civic Center. Almost 300 people showed up, but about 50 people were turned away for various medical reasons. And 50 people left because the lines were moving so slowly. The event concluded at 6 pm, three hours after the scheduled close. It was a long way for everyone----- administrators, nurses, and donors. But there were plenty of chairs and tables, and many people brought their own books, magazines, or newspapers.

The first thing the donors had to do was fill out the donor registration and screening form. When they finished filling out the form, they waited until a nurse called them to her desk. As is known to all, the average adult body contains 8 to 12 pints of blood. Donors can give one pint at a time. It takes your body two to four weeks to replace this amount. Most donors filled up the pint bag within 5 to 10 minutes.

Before leaving, the donors received a sheet of instructions. Do not lift any heavy objects for 12 hours. Leave your pressure bandage for 2-3 hours. Do not smoke for at least 30 minutes. A void alcohol for the rest of the day. Do not do any heavy activity for 24 hours.

―I wish I could hug and kiss all the volunteers that are here today,‖ said Martha, the blood center donor recruiter (新成员). ―Many donors underestimate the importance of what they’re doing. They think it is no big deal, but actually it is. Their blood is saving lives, which will lead to a more harmonious society. We can not thank them enough for that, nor can the recipients(接受者).‖

(一)One possible version:

Dear Paul,

I have received the clothes you sent me two weeks ago. I appreciate your care and help and will share them with my classmates. Y ou’re so kind that I will give you a brief introduction to let you know about the situation now. Our crops were destroyed, the roads and railways were blocked and our electricity was cut off. However, thousands of technical workers, medical workers and policemen were sent to help us to clean the road and repair the damaged power facilities. Besides, we were given money and clothes. Though we suffered a lot, we are warm. With so many people caring for and helping us, we are all right now. So please don’t worry about us. We are thankful and now we must work hard to rebuild our hometown and try to reduce the loss as much as we can.

Y ours truly,

Zhang Hua

(二)One possible version:

It is reported that more and more companies tend to require employees with team spirit. Team spirit is very important to a company. Cooperation and discussion are encouraged instead of individual effort. With team spirit, a company is an efficient and systematic organization. Without it, everyone works according to his own plan and there is no efficiency at all.

In my opinion, team spirit is an important quality for everyone. As we all know, everyone lives in a family, community, class, school, and company, all of which are different kinds of teams. Only with openness and modesty as well as a sense of unity and cooperation, can we achieve success and contribute to society. Undoubtedly, team spirit is being given more and more attention to.

Class 8, Senior 3 , Y ucai High School

Nanjing ,Jiangsu China

June 8,2008

Dear Jack,

I’m writing to tell you something about the adjustment of our legal holidays .

The new holiday plan cuts May Day holiday from three days to one day and for the first time adds a day each ---the Tomb-sweeping Day , the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival to the list of legal holidays.

Recently our class has held a heated discussion about the adjustment .

Three quarters of the students are in favour of it . Their reasons are as follows. Firstly , as an ancient country with a history of over 5,000 years, traditional festivals represent part of the Chinese nation’s culture heritage. Secondly , every traditional festival has its special meaning. Take Dragon Boat Festival for example , people show great honor and respect for our ancient poet, Quyuan, in forms of wrapping and eating zongzi and holding dragon boat races. Another traditional festival ,Tomb-sweeping Day also provides people with a chance to show mourning or respect to their ancestors ,late friends, relatives or heroes .

However , one fifth of the students in our class don’t think it necessary to make such an arrangement . In their opinion, the cancel of May Day Golden Week has made them unable to take a long travel . And people especially young people can’t enjoy themselves thoroughly in the short three-day holiday. Besides , the tourism industry has suffered a great loss as a result of the cancel of the golden week.

As far as I’m concerned , the first adjustment is necessary . Although long holidays can contribute to the development of tourism , it causes all kinds of problems such as traffic jam and pollution. This new plan may solve these problems perfectly.

For my part , the second adjustment is much more meaningful than the first one. The three holidays are not only some traditions but also an important part of ancient Chinese cultures ,therefore, making these traditional festivals legal holidays will help protect folk customs and contribute to keeping them alive in the modern society where they are always forgotten.

Best wishes !

Y ours ,
