The artist was very pleased and thanked the farmer for saying such kind things about his pictures. The farmer smiled and answered, “It’s not that. I have a son in London. He wants to become an artist. When he comes home next month, I’ll show him your picture, and he will not want to be an artist any more, I think.”

In the United States when one becomes rich he wants people to know it. And even he does not become very rich, he wants people to think he is. That's what "Keeping up with the Joneses" is about. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American Arthur Momand. He noticed that many people do things to keep up with their neighbors: they try to look as rich and as successful as their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping Up with the Joneses", because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States. "Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with the people around you.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. That is one reason why they read the "right" books, go to the "right" universities and eat in the "right" restaurants.

There is a story about a bookshop. A student found a useful book in a shop, but it was too expensive for him to buy. He couldn’t get it from the library, either. So every afternoon, he went there to read a little at a time. One day, he couldn’t find the book from its usual place.

Just then, the assistant came up to him and pointed to the book in a corner. “I put it there in order not to be sold out.” said the assistant. Then he left and the student went on his reading.

Do you know why different animals have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other animals with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
