比较SAT和ACT

SAT vs. ACT

It’s no secret that high school Juniors and Seniors devote significant time studying for standardized tests. When applying to college in the US, everyone knows the SAT but few mention that the ACT is an alternative that is just as widely recognized. In fact, nearly all the schools that you are thinking of applying to will accept either exam. And while you can take both exams, it is helpful to think early on about which one will be better for you.

A Quick Comparison

The SAT, comprised of three sections (Math, Critical Reading and Writing), generally focuses more on critical thinking skills. Each section is scored out of 800 with a cumulative score out of 2,400.

The ACT on the other hand, focuses more on what you have learned in school and is comprised

of four sections (Math, English, Reading and Science) with an optional Writing section. Each section is scored out of 36 with each section being averaged for an overall score out of 36.

How Should I Decide Which Test to Take?

1.Take practice tests for each exam. Both the SAT and ACT websites offer free practice

exams. Take at least one of each under test conditions then compare your scores. If you do

significantly better on or prefer the format of one exam then that should be a strong

consideration.

2.Look at the proportion of applicants submitting SAT and ACT scores at schools you

are considering applying to. Generally speaking, you should prefer to submit the test that more students submit. However, if more than 30% of applicants submit either exam then it really doesn’t matter which one you submit. You may also find that in comparing the middle 50% of scores for a school’s admitted students that the bar is slightly lower for either the

SAT or ACT. Also keep in mind that the ACT is more common for students in the middle of the US while the SAT is more common on the east and west coasts. So colleges on the coasts are more likely to see applicants with the SAT and those in the middle are more likely to see those with the ACT.

3.Some colleges will accept the ACT with Writing instead of the SAT and two Subject

Tests. For example, Columbia University will waive its two required SAT Subject Tests if a student submits the ACT with Writing. This can be appealing for students who would rather take fewer tests. Although make sure to check the school’s requirements beforehand.

4.SAT tends to be more suitable for coaching. While there are techniques that can help boost

your score on either test, my experience shows this works better on the SAT. Particularly in China, where there is more familiarity with the SAT, you will find it easier to get help on that exam. Of course, if you are willing to put in the time on either exam, you are likely to see an improvement in your score.
