I went to Xi’an last summer. It was amazing! The Tang tombs were most impressive. There was at least one wonderful place to visit on our schedule every day — the Terra-cotta Warriors, the Tomb of Wu Zetian, who was the only woman who ruled as the Emperor in her own name in Chinese history, and the tombs of all the princes and princesses. The Terra-cotta Warriors Museum is really worth visiting. Those sculptures of warriors and horses are magnificent. They are impressive for their fine workmanship. I spent the whole day there studying those figures and the other exhibits in the museum.

 Dear Michael,
I’m so glad to hear that you are

coming to China next month. I do hope you’ll have time to visit my hometown Suzhou. It is known as “paradise on earth”. The ancient city of Suzhou has remained on its original site for over 2 500 years. The white walls and the dark roof tiles of houses, and the graceful bridges over flowing waters make it look like a marvelous traditional Chinese ink painting. There are over 60 elegant classical gardens in the city. They combine the arts of architecture and gardening, and are a true representation of traditional Chinese culture.
Suzhou is also famous for its silk products. I’m sure your suitcases will be crammed with silk scarves, suits, pajamas on your way to the States.
Yours,
Li Wen

Dear Martha,
I’m so glad to hear that you are coming to China! I don’t know what your itinerary will be like but you must manage to come to Shanghai because it is known as the “Pearl in the Far East”. The ancient city of Shanghai has a brand-new look now. As an international metropolis, Shanghai is the largest port city and the biggest financial center in eastern China. The rapid development of Pudong Zone has added beauty and vigor to Shanghai.
Shanghai is also known as a paradise for shoppers. I’m sure your suitcases will be crammed with various Chinese souvenirs when you start back for the States.

Yours
Zhang Ming
