People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror that their gardens had

disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.

Erosion(侵蚀)of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.

Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.

41. What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face?

A. The disappearance of hotels, houses and gardens.

B. The experts' lack of knowledge.

C. The washing-away of limestone cliffs.

D. The rising of the sea level

A. There seems to be no end to the danger of erosion.

B. Lower housing price has encouraged people to settle down there.

C. Erosion has been a threat to people living on the south coast until recently.

D. government fell reluctant to take defense measures against erosion.

43. The experts' study on the problem of erosion can ______.

A. lead to its eventual solution

B. provide an effective way to slow it down

C. help to prevent it from worsening

D. warn people whose homes are in danger

44. It is not practical to build sea defenses to protect against erosion because ______.

A. it is too costly and will endanger neighboring areas

B. the government is too slow in taking action

C. they will be easily knocked down by waves and currents

D. house agents along the coast do not support the idea

A. guard against being cheated by the house agent

B. have a good knowledge of the potential risk involved.

C. take the quality of the house into consideration

D. examine the house carefully before making a decision

I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.

The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing.” In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through you available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

46. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” (Line 4, Para. 1) in the writing process, he means ________.

A. no one can be both creative and critical

B. they cannot be regarded as equally important

C. they are in constant conflict with each other

D. one cannot use them at the same time

47. What prevents people from writing on is ________.

A. putting their ideas in raw form

B. attempting to edit as they write

C. ignoring grammatical soundness

D. trying to capture fleeting thoughts

48. What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?

A. To organize one’s thoughts logically.

B. To choose an appropriate topic.

C. To get one’s ideas down.

D. To collect raw materials.

49. One common concern of writers about “free writing” is that ________.

A. it overstresses the role of the creative mind

B. it takes too much time to edit afterwards

C. it may bring about too much criticism

D. it does not help them to think clearly

50. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?

A. It refines his writing into better shape.

B. It helps him to come up with new ideas.

C. It saves the writing time available to him.

D. It allows him to sit on the side and observe.

My father’s reaction to the bank building at 43rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York city was immediate and definite: “You won’t catch me putting my money in there!” he declared, “Not in that glass box!”

Of course, my father is a gentleman of the old school, a member of the generation to whom a good deal of modern architecture is upsetting, but I am convinced that his negative response was not so much to the architecture as to a violation of his concept of the nature of money. In his generation money was thought of as a real commodity (实物) that could be carried, or stolen.

Consequently, to attract the custom of a sensible man, a bank had to have heavy walls, barred windows, and bronze doors, to affirm the fact, however untrue, that money would be safe inside. If a building’s design made it appear impenetrable ((难以渗透的), the institution (公共机构) was necessarily reliable, and the meaning of the heavy wall as an architecture symbol reflected people’s prevailing attitude toward money.

But the attitude toward money has, of course, changed. Excepting pocket money, cash of any kind is now rarely used; money as a tangible commodity has largely been replaced by credit. A deficit(赤字) economy, accompanied by huge expansion, has led us to think of money as product of the creative imagination. The banker no longer offers us a safe: he offers us a service in which the most valuable element is the creativity for the invention of large numbers. It is in no way surprising, in view of this change in attitude, that we are witnessing the disappearance of the heavy-walled bank.

Just as the older bank emphasized its strength, this bank by its architecture boasts of imaginative powers. From this point of view it is hard to say where architecture ends and human assertion(人们的说法) begins.

51. The main idea of this passage is that________ .

A.money is not as valuable as it was in the past

B.changes have taken place in both the appearance and the concept of banks

C.the architectural style of the older bank is superior to that of the modern bank

D.prejudice makes the older generation think that the modern bank is unreliable

52 . How do the older generation and the younger one think about money respectively?

A.The former thinks more of money than the latter.

B.The younger generation values money more than the older generation.

C.Both generations rely on the imaginative power of bankers to make money.

D.To the former money is a real commodity but to the latter be a means to produce more money.

53. The words “tangible commodity” (Line 2, Para. 4) refer to something ______.

A. that can be replaceable

B. that is usable

C. that can be touched

D. that can be reproduced

54. According to this passage, a modern banker should be _____.

A.ambitious and friendly B.reliable and powerful

C.sensible and impenetrable D.imaginative and creative

55. It can be inferred from the passage that the author's attitude towards the new trend in banking is _______ .

A.cautious B.regretful C.positive D.hostile

Qixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day that fell yesterday, was not only

a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets. Worse still is the suggestion that young people are beginning to turn their backs on traditional Chinese festivals, celebrating them with less and less enthusiasm. Many young people are not even aware of the Qixi festival or its cultural meaning, as media polls showed. The cold reception has prompted cultural experts to seriously worry that the lover s’ festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty, is dying out. Some have even called for legislation to make the festival a legal “Chinese Lover s’ Day”, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year. But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional Chinese festivals are highly commendable. A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid Autumn Festival, share the same fate as the Qixi Festival. Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is there. If the younger generation fails to identify with the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
