第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。

A

Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx has eight floors, seven gymnasiums, a football field and a planetarium. But there is one place off limits to its more than 3,000 students: the 6-lane swimming pool, which has been dry for nearly three decades.

Within the New York City public school system, though, the troubled Truman pool represents a trend. Of the 50 swimming pools inside the city’s 1,200 school buildings, 10 are in unusable condition. At Martin Luther King Jr. High School (MLK) in Manhattan, the pool has been used to store old chairs and desks since 1986. The pool at Walton High School has been closed since the 1980’s, despite a $54 million school wide renovation(整修).

For the swimming enthusiasts of the city public school system, the empty school pools are a hollow symbols of lost opportunities: to fight against obesity (肥胖); to provide summer job training

in a city that has had to import lifeguards from Europe in recent years; to attract the students who just may love the water even if they hate everything else about high school.

The latest version of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s $13.1 billion, five-year educational capital plan will include $60 million for upgrades to a dozen school pools, including $7 million for Truman, and $4 million for King. But the school system’s capital has historically called for projects that never end up happening. Also, the mayor’s plan relies on $6.5 billion from the state, which is resisting a court order to give the city schools more money.

Teachers and principals say that when school pools work, they are shelters from whatever troubles may pass in the hallways and classrooms. Tension over test scores and safety concerns disappears when the students are swimming.

The purported(传说中的)existence of a pool at Martin Luther King Jr. High School was such a mystery that it inspired an article in a student newspaper. Appearing under the headline “Unlocking MLK’s secrets,” the article was accompanied by a photograph showing old furniture and a television set stacked next to the empty pool. At other schools, the situation is reversed. “The seniors would always tell the freshmen they could find the pool on the fifth floor,” said Adam Kerzner, a Bronx Science swimmer who graduated from the school—which has no fifth floor—in 1997. “It was kind of like a hazing thing.”

56. The swimming pool in MLK High School .

The Green movement is catching on in many parts of the world. This is

especially true in t he construction industry. Today’s buzz words, which

include global warming and zero emissions, are causing people to look for

ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Purchasing houses that are

environmentally responsible is a good investment for those who are

concerned about their own health and the well-being of the earth. Based on

this trend, entire districts, known as eco-communities, are being designed

with green initiatives in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia,

Canada, is one of these communities. Its goal is to become the world’s first zero emissions neighborhood.

If everything goes according to plan, Dockside Green will be a self sufficient community along the harbor front of British Columbia’s capital city. The community will be home to 2,500 people and will consist of residential, office, and retail space. The plans describe a variety of environmental features, some of which are unprecedented.

Builders of Dockside Green have the environment in mind with every choice they make. They ensure proper ventilation, and guarantee residents 100% fresh indoor air. Building materials, such as paints and wood, are natural and non-toxic. Eco-conscious builders use bamboo wherever possible because it can last for a long time without breaking and does not require pesticides to grow.

Energy efficiency is one of the top priorities in Dockside Green. Not only do energy efficient appliances and light fixtures reduce the environmental impact of heating and hot water, they also save residents and business owners money. Dockside Green claims that home owners will use 55% less energy than average residents in Canada. Though they are sharing space in the apartment building, residents will have individual utility meters(公用事业电表). Studies show that people use approximately one fifth less energy when they are billed for exactly what they use. In addition, water is treated at Dockside Green and reused for flushing toilets.

Planners of eco-communities such as Dockside Green must take the future into account. Dockside Green plans on reusing 90% of its construction waste. They also plan to continue using local suppliers for all of their transport and maintenance needs. This is a great way to reduce emissions. Dockside residents will be encouraged to make use of a mini transit system and buy into the community’s car share program. Finally, plans are under way for a high-tech heating system that will use renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels.

A. related to construction

B. popular among people

C. difficult to pronounce

D. used by environmentalists

65. Why is bamboo an environmentally friendly choice for builders?

A. It keeps pests out of the house.

B. It is very cheap.

C. It provides fresh air.

D. It is strong and easy to grow.

66. What major issue does Dockside Green hope to address in the future?

A. Fossil fuel alternatives.

B. Stopping water pollution.

C. Traffic jams.

D. Advocating eco-friendly houses.

Since World WarⅡthe French have been surprised and annoyed by the power of American culture and its effect on France and the world. Their only consolation (安慰) has been the belief that French culture is superior to anything that Walt Disney or Hollywood can offer.

What France’s cultural elites (精英) have rarely done, however, is examine how both serious and pop culture actually work in the United States. Rather, in the view of Frédéric Martel, a Frenchman and author of a recently released book on the topic, they have preferred to hide behind “a certain ideological anti-Americanism”. Now he has set out to change this. In Culture in America, a 622-page book with lots of information, he challenges the conventional view that French culture financed and organized by the government is entirely good and that American culture shaped by market forces is necessarily bad.

“My first idea was to compare France and the United States, but when I arrived in America, I realized things were much more complicated. The United States is a continent, and you can’t compare a continent with a small country or a decentralized country with one that is highly centralized” Martel recalled.

As a result, this book deals only with creativity and arts financing in the United States. But perhaps surprisingly, given the mixture of fear and disdain (鄙视) that American culture stirs among many French intellectuals, his approach is not polemical (争论的). He neither defends nor attacks the United States; he simply describes the American way of culture.

“This idea is to see how a ‘counter-model’ works,” he explained. “If the aim is to fight American culture ‘imperialism’, we need to know it from the inside. If we want to modernize our own system, which needs new resources, it is useful to see how things can function without huge public investment.”

The news media’s response to Culture in America suggests there is room for debate. One weekly, L’Express, said the book offered food for thought. Another, Le Nouvel Observateur, compared it favorably to a recent overview on Democracy in America by Tocqueville, noting that Mr. Martel provides facts rather than impressions. Reviewing the book in Le Monde, critics also said its strength lay in its emphasis on investigation over opinion. And another article in Le Monde took the American cultural statistics collected by Mr. Martel and compared them with similar figures for France. Its unexpected conclusion was that the cultural infrastructures in the two countries were roughly similar.

67. When it comes to their own culture, the French feel .

A. angry

B. proud

C. disappointed

D. surprised

68. Mr. Martel gave up his idea of comparing France and the United States mainly because

.

A. French culture is superior to American culture

B. French people hold an anti-Americanism attitude

C. American culture is much more complicated

D. American cultural activities don’t have public investment

69. According to the passage, the book Culture in America.

A. attacks the US but defends France

B. investigates into the American culture

C. emphasized the freedom of American society

D. promotes the popularity of French culture

70. What type of writing is the article likely to be?

A. A science fiction

B. An advertisement

C. An official document

D. A book review

The Ebola Virus

Currently, the world is facing an epidemic (流行病) due to what is considered to be among the most dangerous viruses that humanity has ever faced—the Ebola bleeding virus. Though there were announcements about experimental treatments that were reported to be successful in terms of treating the virus, people around the world continue to die from Ebola.

Ebola was first discovered in 1976 in Africa, on the banks of the Ebola River, after which the virus has been named. Back then, there were two major outbreaks of the virus, and this is how people learned about it. There exist several strains of the Ebola virus, some of them are deadly to people, and some are not.

The main symptoms of Ebola can appear in a period between the second and the 21st days of infection, but usually it happens on the eighth through 10th day. Among the symptoms that appear in the first turn, one should mention fever and chills, strong headaches, pain in joints and muscles, and general weakness. These symptoms are not too different from those that people usually experience when catching a severe cold, or flu, so victims may even ignore these symptoms, or try to treat them as a common sickness. However, as the virus keeps progressing, a patient develops nausea(呕吐) with vomiting, diarrhea, chest and stomach pains, red eyes and rash over the body, severe weight loss, and bleeding from almost all bodily openings.

The virus is usually transmitted either through blood, or through waste. Infection through blood usually takes place if a person consumes infested meat, or even touches it (for example, butchering can also lead to infection). Also, there were cases when people got infected after stepping in waste of infected mammals, mostly bats. The other ways of getting infected is through skin by receiving bodily liquids via tiny openings.

Even though there is no specific cure for Ebola, doctors still try to treat it. In order to diagnose Ebola, doctors usually take tests on such diseases as cholera or malaria, because it is difficult to diagnose Ebola based only on symptoms. After the diagnosis has been made, doctors start treating the symptoms, which includes killing infected cells, electrolytes, blood pressure medication, blood transfusions, oxygen treatment, and so on.

Though Ebola is a highly dangerous disease, it is not likely that it will spread globally. It is most deadly in anti-sanitary(不卫生的) conditions, which many African countries have an extremely bad reputation for. As for first world countries, even though there is still no universal cure, they are at much lesser risk than African countries. Though the symptoms of Ebola are severe and getting infected is not difficult, with the correct handling of an outbreak, the virus should not be able to spread.

If you logged on to weibo, chances are that there is lots of news

about the Ice Bucket Challenge videos. Many celebrities, including US

President Barack Obama and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, have already

taken the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge—dump ice water on your head, post and

tag yourself on social media and challenge others to do the same. It’s

initial objective was fundraising and bringing awareness to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association in the US.

But has it achieved anything?

The figures say it did. During the month of August, 2014, in America alone, ALS received over $98 million—a big jump compared to the $2.7 million donated during the same period last year.

But the Ice Bucket Challenge has its critics. It’s been very celebrity-orientated and it plays into our culture of putting everything about ourselves out there on social media. Some people have obviously done it to raise their profile (关注度). Charity has become big business. Pity they can’t let the cause speak for itself.

书面表达:

The Ice Bucket Challenge, intended to help ALS patients, is simple: One pours a bucket of icy water over his or her head and then challenge others to do so. It leaves room for debate.

There is no denying that the challenge has raised people’s awareness to contribute to the ASL Association. But I’m not for this kind of practice because it has turned from a charitable activity into a show. Some celebrities just do it to gain popularity; some others participate in it just to follow the trend. On top of that, they don’t know how bad the ALS patients will feel when they watch those videos. Besides, it is a great waste of water since the world is facing another challenge—the water crisis.

In summary, charity should be about giving because it’s a worthwhile cause, so that I suggest we should take some other practical actions instead. (150 words)

M: I like listening to the news on the radio because I don’t have to sit in one place like I do with TV.

W: I guess you’re right. But on TV they show pictures of the important news and it makes me feel like I’m here.

M: But they always show the same pictures until something new happens.

W: I prefer the newspaper. With the newspaper I know the news more clearly than on either radio or TV.

M: Yes, but sometimes it’s old news. You only get the newspaper in the morning and radio gives you the breaking news as it happens.

W: Is it really important to know everything that’s happening at the moment it happens?

M: No, not everything. But some things, like news of an accident on the highway.

W: Oh, good. Do you know where I should get off?

M: At the Central Park station.

W: Do you know how long it will take?

M: Oh, probably more than three hours by bus. Why don’t you drive your new car?

W: Well, Dad, you know I just got my license, and I don’t know how to get there.

M: Come on, sweetheart. Have a little more confidence in yoursel f, OK? Here’s the map.

W: OK, I’ll do it. By the way, what kind of gift do you think I should get for her?

M: I’m not sure. Maybe an ice cream cake or some flowers?

W: Well, I’d really like to get her something special, something that will last.

M: Oh, I remember you both like teddy bears, right?

W: Good idea. How could I forget that! Thank you, Dad.

M: You’re welcome. Take care and have a good time.

W: What are you reading, Sam?

M: The Kite Runner. It’s a great book.

W: What is it about?

M: It’s about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s. It’s a very touching story and also a little sad. Do you like such books?

W: I used to like exciting adventure stories, but now I love reading books like that.

M: Jenny, would you be interested in joining a book club?

W: Sure. Do you know one of them?

W: I’m really interested, but I can’t go for the next several weeks. I’m concentrating on working out in the gym for the next six weeks, but I’ll have time after that.

M: Great. You can join us then.

W: Yeah. I really look forward to meeting other people who also love reading.
