Do you know what a MOOC is? MOOC is short for Massive(大量) Open Online Course. Thousands of people can take a MOOC at the same time. You can be anywhere in the world to take it. All you need is a computer and the Internet. MOOCs became very popular in the autumn of 2011, when Professor Sebasian Thrun from Stanford University opened his course up to any student anywhere, and 160,000 students in more than 190 countries signed up. This new kind of online classes is shaking up the higher education world.

For years, many colleges have offered classes online. MOOCs are always used in subjects like computer science or engineering. However, can MOOCs be used in other subjects like arts or philosophy?

Scott Anderson teaches philosophy at the university of British Columbia in Canada. He sees both good and bad sides of MOOCs. He says, “When students take some lessons, they needn’t be present to hear and get them. “He says more and more students in MOOCs can m ean less communication between them and the teachers.He also gives two ways to solve this problem -more teachers and making online discussion groups.Lisa Jadwin teaches English and American literature and writing at St John Fisher College in New York. She says online education has some weaknesses for her subjects. She says, “What’s lost in online education is face-to-face communication. But the teaching of literature needs that.” She says some students can learn very well from talks, blogs and discussion groups. But she believes that mixed courses work best.

If you put your history notes under your pillow (枕头) and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better in the exam? Most of us have hoped this might help. However, knowledge can’t go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn't mean you can’t learn while you sleep.

Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours.

In one experiment(实验), researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they were asleep, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn’t wake them up, and onl y the newly introduced words were used.

Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identify and translate the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they slept. The third group listened to words while they walked. The walkers did not have the same success remembering the words as the sleeping group.

The researchers later found that people had more slow-wave(慢波的) brain activity all over the night. They said that more slow waves made people have better memory for the new words.
