Ⅳ.阅读理解

A

Let us consider what we can do for the food problem.

The simple way to increase food production, one might suppose, is to bring more land into farmland and put more people to work on it.

But it is proved in some developing countries that this will bring some problems. It will quickly make the soil poorer there and destroy forest growth. Further more, the people there will always find they need more people to work on this land to produce more food.

During the past twenty years, some developing countries have increased a lot more farmland in their countries, but their populations have in the meantime grown faster; therefore they are farther than before. And their food increase has been gained at the cost of using up the rich lands. Many of the lands have become poor lands and are producing less food now.

Meanwhile, farming in the developed countries has produced more food through improved technology. Since 1940, farmland has been reduced 7 percent in the United States but cereal (谷物) production has jumped 60 percent. The increase in the corn output, thanks to hybrid corn (杂交玉米), has been even greater.

The secret is scientific ways, of course. And compared to the developing countries, the populations in developed countries have increased just a little larger than twenty years ago.

On the whole, world population today is increasing at the speed higher than ever before. Every year the population is two percent larger, so that the 6,000,000,000 people on the earth today will present another 120,000,000 mouths to be fed by the time next year. It is a fearsome thought that this time tomorrow there will be added to this world population some 360,000 persons.

What can we do about the increase of population,or the lack of food to feed such a large, increasing population? That is a very

important problem before everyone on the earth, young or old,men or women.

1. In the author's opinion, ________ seems to be the most serious problem today.

A. pollution

B. lack of food

C. poor farmland

D. the increase of world population

答案与解析D由最后一段“What can we do about the increase of population ...”,及倒数第二段人口增长的几个数据可知。

2. To get enough food for the world population,________.

A. we should develop farming science and technology

B. we should get more land into farmland

C. developed countries should produce more food

D. developing countries should stop making forests into farmland

答案与解析A由第五段“Meanwhile,farming ... through improved technology.”可知。

3. From the agriculture history in US, we can conclude that ________.

A. the more population there is,the less food there is

C. science will be helpful in feeding the world population

Polly Jones lived on a farm. She had lived there all her life, all twelve years of it. Her father, who managed the farm, had just lifted the potato crop. Prices were high; he wanted to sell the crop as quickly as he could.

Polly wandered over the rough field looking for the small potatoes that the pickers had accidentally missed. She found one, then another, then a handful. She was pleased. They were delicious once cooked. Then she caught sight of something else. It looked like a piece of colored stone. Polly picked it up and thought how pretty it was. She could see a pattern on it, a picture of a fish and a part of a leaf. She scraped the soil away around her feet and found that she was standing on what seemed to be a piece of pavement. Stuck to another piece of stone was something small and round like a button. She realized it was an old coin.

The field was busy the next morning though not with potato pickers. In front of the house where the farm machinery usually stood were several cars and a police van. A group of distinguished-looking men and women had appeared the morning after her father's telephone call. The local television station had shown some pictures of the field with Polly pointing to the place where she had found her pavement. It was proved to be of Roman origin and was being

described as the most exciting thing that had happened in the area since the end of the Second World War. In those days an American airbase had occupied the site of the potato field.

A week later about forty students arrived from the local university. That afternoon a truck with equipment arrived. The excavation (挖掘) was officially under way. Permission had been given and the “dig”,as it was called, was expected to last several months. Polly wondered how the everyday work of the farm would get done with so many strange people around and cars coming and going all day long. All the unusual activities had made the cows and sheep restless. Her father said their cows produced less milk.

Still, it was interesting and of great fun. They had let her keep the gold coin. From then on, Polly would always walk carefully over potato fields.

5. There were still potatoes in the field because the pickers ________.

A. had left them for Polly on purpose

B. thought they were too small

C. would pick them later

D. had failed to notice them

答案与解析D由第二段第一句“... looking for the small potatoes that the pickers had accidentally missed.”可知。

6. When Polly was looking for potatoes ________ caught her attention first.

B. an old coin

C. a piece of pavement

D. a button

答案与解析C由第二段“... and found that she was standing on what seemed to be a piece of pavement.”可知。

7. Why did the findings cause great excitement?

B. An ancient Roman site was discovered.

Did you know that vegetables can grow in the climates they are not used to? Cool climate vegetables like asparagus (芦笋) are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii, marine (海的) engineers have been able to actually let you believe such vegetables are

living in hotter climates. In that way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is simply cold sea water. How did they use it? They place pipes in the soil and cold water flowing through them cools the earth. This causes plantgrowth and enables gardeners in tropical climates (热带气候) to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they make the air “wet” and thus water the gardens. What especially makes people happy about this process (过程) is that nothing bad to the natural conditions is being used. Another new use of cold ocean water is to cool

buildings. Engineers believe that the entire west coast of the United States could be airconditioned by using sea water.

高中英语黄金阅读(高一版) 习俗类 (1) In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal. Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change. 1. Which statement is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table. 高一英语人教版必修三unit1课文内容

Unit 1 Festivals around the world FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times. Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Festivals of the dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’ homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Y uan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.
