Though there are about 400 languages from all over the world that are in danger of disappearing completely, Zoque Ayapaneco, a native Mexican language is considered the most likely to become extinct, because the only two people in the world that speak it fluently do not talk to each other!

And, it's not because they live in different countries, states or even villages. In fact, Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velazquez, both in their 70s, live within 500 yards of each

other, in the village of Ayapa in the Southern Mexican State of Tabasco. They, however, refuse to communicate because they simply don't have much in common. Segovia is apparently a little flank in nature while Velazquez is described as shy.

Segovia was at least able to talk in Zoque Ayapanece with his brother until he passed away about 12 years ago, and still manages to practice it with his family, especially his son Manuel, who for the last five years has been trying to learn it and hopes to become fluent enough to teach it to the next generation. Velazquez on the other hand, has not been heard speaking in the language with anybody.

The two men say the language used to be widely spoken in the village, but the younger generation shunned it for fear of being laughed at, and it therefore began to die a slow death, as the elders passed away.

Unless the two men get their acts together, the only way to hear the language will be to either listen to Manuel's not-so-fluent statement or see them talk in a documentary entitled “Lengua Muerta” (Dead Language) that is being filmed to capture Zoque Ayapaneco and 364 other native Mexican languages that are in a similar state.

We sure hope Segovia and Velazquez soon find something common to talk about. Maybe the fact is that the language is dying and that they should start encouraging and teaching the next generation together.

25. What do we know about Zoque Ayapaneco?

A. It was widely used twelve years ago.

B. It will be dying out if no effective measures are taken.

C. It will be popular in Mexico in the near future.

D. It is a Southern American language.

26. The underlined word “shunned” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.

A. favored

B. identified

C. were unwilling to learn

D. protected

27. From the passage, we can conclude that________.

A. altogether 365 languages are becoming extinct in the world.

B. Segovia and Velazquez will communicate with each other soon

C. the government cares a lot about the protection of Zoque Ayapaneco

D. we can hear the language from Manuel or docum entary “ Lengua Muerta”

28. What's the main idea of the passage?

A. World's endangered languages are being filmed.

B. Villagers are trying to protect their old language.

C. An endangered language is spoken by only two people.

D. There are a lot of languages in Mexico.

In order to change their looks, 20 percent of women aged between 19 and 49 in Seoul said they had gone under the knife. The growth of South Korea’s pop music industry increases the popularity. Many patients visit clinics(诊所) with photos of singers, asking doctors to copy their noses or eyes.

Joo Kwon, who founded one of the largest clinics in Seoul, recently opened a hotel to better serve customers. People will spend about US $17,675 in a single visit. It’s useful and necessary to discuss learning habits. As we all know, good learning habits can make our study successful. As a student, we should pay more attention to our habits which we form in our study.

I’m sure “repeat” is a good habit. Do you develop the habit? If we want to improve our study, we should repeat what the teachers have taught us again and again, and then we can understand or remember the knowledge which the teachers demand us to master. How to develop the habit is very important. As far as I’m concerned, we can make a plan and then insist on carrying out the plan.

Actually, I have some bad habits. When I do my homework, I often make mistakes. It’s time to get rid of it, so I should be more careful when I do my homework and have a check after I finish it.

(Text 1)

W: Excuse me, but when does this reach San Francisco?

M: This bus does not go to San Francisco.

W: Isn’t this the number twelve bus?

M: Yes, it is, but this bus is going south. You want the bus that goes north.

(Text 2)

M: Well, here we are! Let me get the door for you.

W: Why on earth did you bring me here?

M: This is a great restaurant. You can get anything you want here.

W: Anything except good service.

(Text 3)

M: The price of plane tickets to Italy is going down this fall. Should we book a flight and travel there this year? I want to drink Italian wine in Italy.

W: Yes. Let’s go! My friend went there last year, and she told me about a nice place to stay.

(Text 4)

W: Look at this photo. It was taken at Marvin and Joan’s wedding ceremony twenty years ago.

M: I know. It’s so embarrassing, isn’t it? I can’t believe I ha d such long hair.

(Text 5)

W: The state park is closed for the weekend. Do you know why?

M: A bear has been getting into campers’ food. The park rangers say it’s too dangerous to camp there until they catch the bear.

(Text 6)

M: Ella, what languages do you speak?

W: As you know, Korean is my first language. I also speak English and Chinese. How about you? What languages do you speak?

M: English, German, and French. While I was studying in Europe, I used French and German all the time. Now my French is not so good, but I do deep my German up.

W: How do you practice your German?

M:Oh, the man who lives next door-his name is Heinz-is from Berlin. He and I are always talking about Germany.

W: Well, all you need now is a neighbor from Paris!

(Text7)

W: Did you have your own room when you were little, Jack?

M: No. I think for the first 17 years of my life, I always had somebody else in the room with me.

W: I always wanted my own room, you know, because there were five kids in our family and we had to share rooms. I had my own room for the first time when I was about 15.

M: When I had my own room for the first time in my life, I felt very proud and wrote in my diary,“I will treasure this new freedom!”

W: Well, many of my friends had their own rooms even when they were young, even as babies.

I was so jealous! But there were only three bedrooms in our house for seven people, so it was really crowded.

(Text 8)

M: Halloween is coming. Are you planning to dress up this year?

W: I wasn’t going to. Why do they have this holiday anyway? I don’t understand it. People just dress up in scary costumes and eat candy all night.

M: That’s not really all it’s about. Many people dress like their favorite cartoon character or a famous person. They go to Halloween parties and play games. Sometimes, they play funny tricks on each other.

W:That doesn’t sound so bad. Why was Halloween started in the first place?

M:It comes from an old holiday. When people honored their dead relatives. Many people in other countries still celebrate it that way.

W: That sounds better than dressing up like a dead person.

M:Then I can’t wait until you see my costume. You’re going to be so scared!

W:Please don’t say that! I hate those kinds of surprises. What are you going to dress up as?

M:A ghost!

(Text 9)

W: I can’t decide which classes to take. I don’t like any of the ones I’ve signed up for.And two of the ones I really have to take are at the same time!

M:Pass me the course schedule book. Which classes are at the same time?

W:Biology 201 and Introduction to Chemistry. They’re both required classes.

M:Let’s find out if either of them is offered next semester. Look here. The chemistry class is. You can just take it in the spring.

W:Yes,that’s true. And the biology class is in a series, so I need to take 201 this semester. The only problem with taking chemistry next semester is that it meets every day at 8:00a.m. M:What’s wrong with that? Is that too early for you?

W: Not too early. But I was trying not to take classes on Fridays. I want to work in the lab that whole day. I might be able to work for one of my professors.

M:Maybe you can start work after the class is over. It’s only an hour lecture. I’m sure the professor will understand.

W:I hope so.

Text 10

When I was young, I lived in a place that had a lot of trees, many rivers, and was near a big lake. We had a large house with a garden and lots of grass. My brothers and sisters and I played outside whenever we could in our own yard, in our neighbors’ yards, and in the empty yards down the street. We rode bikes and played ballgames with friends. But I always thought that there was something missing in my environment, as wonderful as it was.

I liked going to the big lake the most. Even there, though, I felt I needed something more. The lake was big, but you could still see land on the other side. One day, my family took a trip to New York City. As we drove on the freeway, I looked out the window at the ocean. For as far as I could see, there was no land on the other side. I rolled down the window and heard the sounds of the sea birds. They seemed to call me, telling me I would never be able to live away from the sea again.

All the houses are painted white and the skies are clear. It's not surprising that the life here is very relaxing, and it is also home to plenty of cafes and art galleries. Wengen in Switzerland Do you ever wonder how the world was before cars were invented? The village called Wengen might just help you realize your dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close to 100 years, and everything looks like it was taken right out of Heidi. The locals have kept their Swiss culture undamaged. Shirakawa-go in Japan This village is certainly known for its unusual houses with triangular roofs which seem to resemble hands joined in prayer. It's designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. These houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore. Eze in France France in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice. During the Middle Ages, it was desired by invaders(侵略者),and while this was a cause of sadness for the local people in the past, today the village enjoys its rich heritage(遗产).The architecture here is so diverse.

When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D.
