Dear Mr. King,

Your grocery store is outstanding in many ways. I enjoy the selection of produce and fresh bakery items. I have been a long time Supermart shopper and hope to continue for many years. I have found, however, that I must make a separate shopping trip to one of your competitors because there are many items your store does not carry. This becomes inconvenient for me, as my time is valuable, and I do not like to make two trips. Your low prices and excellent customer service keep me coming back to Supermart, but I would be a more satisfied customer if I could find all the items I need in one place.

Specifically, I have never been able to purchase nacho cheese soup at your store. I can find other flavors(味道)of soup, but your store does not carry nacho cheese soup, a common ingredient(原料)in many of my recipes. In addition, I can only find large wonton wrappers. Another example is Regent Brand Chili Seasoning. Though it is not a leading brand, it is still common on the shelves of other grocery stores in this area and is superior in flavor to its competitors.

I sincerely hope to continue a relationship with your store, and I hope that you will consider the possibility of expanding your goods to be more competitive.

It took me a long time to understand the difference between a present and a gift.

I grew up in a household where presents marked special occasions. There was always something for each of us at Christmas or on our birthday. So when I married a man who did not give presents on regular basis, it was an adjustment. Gary did not wholly shun gift-giving, though. Sometimes he would return from sea with something he found that reminded of me——a meat cleaver(切肉机)on our first Christmas, a paring(削皮)knife on our fifth. But mostly, he ignored holidays, refusing to shop for a thing to present to me as a sign of his affection.

I could not accept this presentless marriage with the one I had grown up observing. I tried to change him by example. I knitted him sweaters, socks, hats and gloves for Christmas; made him shirts; and bought books for his birthdays. He appreciated the caring these gifts represented, but refused to follow my example. I began to tell him what I wanted, giving specific instructions. When Gary left for the local

auction one Saturday (my birthday as it happened), I asked him to find me a necklace or diamond earring as a birthday gift. He came home with a road scraper(刮板).I was stunned that he had missed the mark by so much. He attached it to the back of the ancient tractor, and then enthusiastically showed me how to use it, not seeing that I was not grateful.

But when a snowstorm hit later that year and he was at sea, I used the road scraper to plow out both our drive and out neighbor’s. Gary had wisely chosen not the thing that I wanted, but the thing that he knew I would need.

I finally realized that he had been giving me gifts all along. The gestures, large and small, born of his caring and concern for me, for our children and for our lives together were the gifts that he gave daily. We struggle to teach others how to love us. In that struggle, we often forget how to appreciate the love they already give us as only they can give it. There are two parts to a gift——the giving and the accepting.

I finally began to understand the difference between a present and a gift. A present is a thing. But a gift is broader and often deeper. It is a small act of kindness, the willingness to bend to another’s needs. Love is a gift. Any expression of it, freely given, is an offering from the heart that is immeasurably better than a present.

64. Why didn’t Gary give the author presents as often as she ex pected him to?

A. Because his family didn’t have this tradition.

B. Because he thought gifts ought to be useful.

C. Because he was too busy to think of preparing a gift.

D. Because he knew the difference between a present and a gift.

65. Which of the follo wing word has the closet meaning to “shun” in Paragraph 2?

A. prevent

B. accept

C. hide

D. avoid

66. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

B. Gary pretended that h e didn’t know what his wife expected from him.

C. The author never expected to receive any jewelry from her husband.

D. The couple accepted each other and changed their views on love.

67. What does the passage mainly convey?

A. Marriage needs understanding.

B. A gift is different from a present.

C. A small kindness goes a long way.

D. Family traditions must b valued.

C

As people have accurately observed, smiles are absent from early photographs. In 1852, for instance, a girl sat for her Daguerrotype, her head slightly turned, giving the camera an unsmiling look. She is preserved forever as a very serious girl indeed, Charles Darwin, a loving and playful parent, looks frozen in photographs. Why did our ancestors, from unknown sitters for family portraits(肖像画)to the great and famous, become so bad in front of the camera?

The severity is everywhere in Victorian photographs. However, you don’t have to look very long at these unsmiling old photos to see how incomplete the seemingly obvious answer is——that they are freezing their faces in order to keep still for the long exposure times. In Julia Margaret Cameron’s Portrait of Tennyson, the poet dreams, his face a shadowed mask of genius. This is not simply a technique. It’s an emotional choice.

People is the past did not go around in a continual state of sorrow. In fact, the Victorians had a sense of humor even about the darkest aspects of their society. Laughter was not just common in the past but accepted by society far more than it is today, from medieval carnivals(中世纪狂欢节)to Georgian print shops, where people gathered to look at the latest funnies. Far from preventing festivals and fun, the Victorians, who invented photography, also created Christmas as a celebration as it is today. So the severity of people in the 19th–century photographs cannot be the evidence of generalized sadness. This was not a society in permanent desperation. Instead, the true answer has to do with attitudes to portraiture itself.

People who sat for early photographs understood it as a significant moment. Sitting for the camera was cheaper, quicker and meant that people who never had a chance to be painted could now be photographed; but people seemed to have taken it seriously in the same way they would be a painted portrait. Like a portrait painting, it was intended as a timeless record of a person.

To me those unsmiling people probably had so much fun as we do, if not more. But they felt no need to prove it with pictures. Instead, when they sat for a photograph, they thought about time, death and memory. Perhaps we should stop smiling sometimes, too.

68. What do we know about the people in Victorian times?

A. They laid importance on religious events.

B. They were skillful at portrait painting.

C. They valued their family life.

D. They enjoyed themselves in actual life.

69. The author mentions Portrait of Tennyson in Paragraph 2 to ______.

A. prove a theory

B. support his opinion

C. introduce a painting

D. describe a technique

70. The author thinks early people look frozen in old photos because ______.

A. they lived in a traditional society

B. they had to stay still for a long time

C. they regarded photograph important

D. they held negative views about painting

71. What is the author’s attitude towards people not smiling in old photos?

A. Skeptical.

B. Critical.

C. Neutral.

D. Positive

Camaraderie over Competence(能力)

The importance of liking people is the subject of an article in the Harvard Business Review, which has carried out an experiment to find out who we’d rather work with. Hardly su rprisingly, the people we want most as our workmates are both: brilliant at their jobs and delightful human beings. And the people we want least are both unpleasant and useless. More interestingly, the authors found that, given the choice between working with lovable fools and competent jerks(性情古怪的人), we irresistibly choose the former. Anyway, who likes those stupid men who annoy or hurt other people? We might insist that competence matters more, but our behavior shows we stay close to the people we like and sharing information with them.

What companies should therefore do is get people to like each other more. The trick here is apparently to make sure staffs come across each other as often as possible during the day. They also should be sent on bonding courses and so on to encourage friendliness and break down displeasure. However, more outdoor-activity weekends and shared coffee machines inspire no confidence at all.

The reality is that people either like each other or they don’t. You can’t force it. Possib ly you can make coffee friendlier by tolerating a lot of chat, but there is a productivity cost to that. In my experience, the question of lovable fool against competent jerk may not be the right one. The two are interrelated: we tend not to like our workmates when they are completely hopeless. I was once quite friendly with a woman whom I later worked with. I found her to be so outstandingly bad at her job that I lost respect for her and ended up not really liking her at all. Then is there anything that companies should be doing about it?

By far the most effective strategy would be to hire people who are all pretty much the same, given that similarity is one of the main determinants of whether we like each other. I think this is a pretty good idea, but no one dares recommend this anymore without offending the diversity lobby group. There is only one acceptable view on this subject: teams of similar people are bad because they stop creativity. This may be true, though I have never seen any conclusive proof of it.

Not only do we like similar people, we like people who like us. So if companies want to promote more liking, they should encourage a culture where we are all nice to each other. The trouble is that this needs to be done with some skill.

22. According to the research, which kind of colleagues would most people tend to choose?

A. Nice but unintelligent.

B. Creative but unattractive.

C. Competent but unfriendly.

D. Humorous but unambitious.

73. The author talks about her experience to show that ______.

A. people respect outstanding leaders

B. people tend to like optimistic workmates

C. a workmate’s working ability is important

D. talkative workmates makes offices friendlier

74. Some people think that similar people working together may ______.

A. offend each other

B. create fewer new ideas

C. talk more and work less

D. be likely to stick together

75. To encourage workmates to like each other, companies could ______.

A. arrange the training course for workers to study together

B. organize team-building activities outside the office

C. encourage a diversity of opinions in workplace

D. build the atmosphere where staff show kindness.

Tips for Cooking on a Tight Schedule

From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money, and time. 76 . Money is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:

1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there’s nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already? 77 .

2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 78 . It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.

3. 79 . This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.

Hopefully that gives you a good start. 80 And don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!

A. Try new things.

B. Ability is easily improved.

C. Make three or four instead.

D. Understand your food better.

E. Cooking is a burden for many people.

F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.

G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.

如一进课堂我说:“It’snicetoseeyouagain./It’sfinetoday,isn’t?/Howareyoutoday?”
