Patin, marine pollution is the condition that results when people introduce into the seas substances harmful to life, health, resources, activities, or 43 .

Marine pollution is far from new. For over a million years, people have thought of the sea as a 44 place to throw their garbage. And it is true that the sea has a great capacity for absorbing organic wastes. Some of these wastes are eaten directly by the larger fishes. Others quickly 45 into a kind of organic soup that provides food to 46 species of single-celled plant and animal life.

As civilizations grew, more different pollutants were dumped into the seas. Still, this pollution did not really threaten the marine environment. The seas seemed 47 of coping with anything that people could throw at them. This situation changed, however, when suddenly factories began dumping enormous quan tities of materials into the seas. Especially in some coastal areas near large cities, ocean pollution began to 48 marine life. For the first time, the oceans began to fail in their ability to 49 humanity?s waste.

It took brave European explorers less than 300 years, between 1420 and 1713, to establish that all the seas of the world formed an enormous and continuous ocean. This discovery encouraged them to 50 into areas which had n?t been charted until then. With the discovery of new lands, new trade routes were 51 . In many parts of the world, colonies and settlements were established and many odd-looking products were brought back to 52 , arousing great interest and 53 wealth.

It was probably the irresistible desire for wealth which 54 persuaded Europeans of the fifteenth century to 55 their legendary dangers and explore further out into the open seas. By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the larger schools, it's close to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven't heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction.

While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi (课程大纲), reading assignment, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instruct or is minimized or eliminated altogether.

The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there's the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas (睡衣). But figures indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While dropout rate for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online

students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eCornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom course.

Clearly, from the schools' perspective, there's a lot of money to be saved. The more students who enroll in a course but don't come to campus, the more school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers.

68. What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix?

A. It boasts the largest number of students on campus.

B. All its courses are offered online.

C. Its online courses are of the poor quality.

D. Someone taking its online courses is likely to get a degree.

69. According to the passage, distance learning is basically characterized by ________.

A. a minimum or total absence of face-to-face instruction

B. a considerable flexibility in its academic requirements

C. the great diversity of students? academic backgrounds

D. the casual relationship between students and professors

70. What explains the high drop-out rates for online students?

A. There is no mechanism to ensure that they make the required effort.

B. There is strict control over the academic standards of the courses.

C. The evaluation system used by online universities is not weak.

D. Lack of classroom interaction reduces the effectiveness of instruction.

71. According to the passage, universities show great enthusiasm for DL programs for the purpose

of ________.

A. building up their reputation

B. upgrading their teaching facilities

C. providing convenience for students

D. cutting down on their expenses

( C )

With an increasing number of lives being taken each year, there is a call to control the gun, to restrict its use and the ease with which it may be purchased in many parts of the country, or to be rid of it altogether. However there are also many Americans who, despite the shocking death rate, feel that we have the right to won firearms.

Opponents of strict gun controls argue that the right to own firearms is guaranteed by the U.S. constitution. The claim is made that, without firearms, we would be more vulnerable(易受攻击的)than ever to criminal violence. The privately owned gun helped us to win our freedom in the first place, they say; it can help us preserve that freedom today.

Further, opponents of gun control tell us that gun-control laws don?t work because the people who cause most of the trouble ---- the criminals ---- simply don?t bother to obey them. But the

proponents of control reply by producing statistics to show that control laws have kept the crime rates down in other nations. Strictly enforced controls, they believe, can do the same thing here.

Basically, the anti-control people feel that to call for and make laws against the gun is to move in the wrong direction. They recognize that there is much violence in much society and know that something must be done about it. But they argue that when the gun is involved in violence, it is not, in itself, responsible for the trouble. A gun, after all, is an inanimate(死气沉沉的)object that is incapable of acting on its own. The fault lies with the people who misuse it ---- the criminals, the mentally ill, the emotionally unstable, the intoxicated(喝醉的). It will do no good, then, to move against the gun. Violence will be reduced only if we restrict the people who pull the trigger(扳机).

The extent of your vocabulary indicates the degree of your intelligence. Your brain power will increase as you learn to know more words. Here's the proof. Two classes in a high school

were selected for an experiment. Their ages and their environment were the same. Each class represented an identical cross-section of the community. One, the control class, took the normal courses. The other class was given special vocabulary training. At the end of the period the marks of the latt er class surpassed those of the control group, not only in English, but in every subject, including mathematics and the sciences. Similarly it has been found by Professor Lewis M.Terman, of Stanford University, that a vocabulary test is as accurate a measure of intelligence as any three units of the standard and accepted Stanford-Binet I.Q. tests.

77.

The study of words is not merely something that has to do with literature. Words are your tools of thought. You can't even think at all without them. Try it. If you are planning to go down town this afternoon you will find that you are saying to yourself: "I think I will go down town this afternoon." You can't make such a simple decision as this without using words. Your words are your keys for your thoughts. And the more words you have at your command the deeper, clearer and more accurate will be your thinking.

80.

Words have changed the direction of history. Words can also change the direction of your life. They have often raised a man from mediocrity to success. If you consciously increase your vocabulary you will unconsciously raise yourself to a more important station in life, and the new and higher position you have won will, in turn, give you a better opportunity for further enriching your vocabulary. It is a beautiful and successful cycle.

Section D

Directions:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words..

A few years ago when my boys were young, I homeschooled them. Part of my teachin g included community service. At that time the Collierville Library was looking for volunteers to come to serve lunch to some elderly people. So we decided to devote every Tuesday to that. They were a great group of people, all ladies apart from one gentleman. And they enjoyed my boys very much. The ladies were talkative. And the man, Mr. Grady, was quiet and gentle. You could feel his spirit and his eyes were so kind.

He struggled to walk and do some of the simple things we all take for granted but he never gave up. At times, he would ask for assistance, and I was always thrilled to help. Despite his physical need, his mind was sharp, and he loved to play dominos (多米诺骨牌). He was a natural wiz with numbers, was very patient with my boys and enjoyed teaching them how to play.

One day I asked Mr. Grady what his condition was exactly. He told me he had Parkinson?s disease. I truly never gave it another thought because he was NOT his disease! He was Mr. Grady!

A very sweet yet strong man who had so much to offer to all those he came into contact with.

Over time I?ve thought back on those days and how glad I am that my boys got to experience this. When I have days when I struggle, I think about Mr. Grady and how Parkinson?s disease was just a small part of who he was.

Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true.
