Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

The wonders which medical workers have already brought about in the diagnosis and treatment of disease suggest that a time may come when the physician will be able to analyze most illness as soon as they start, and cure them before damage results. How soon this “golden age of healing” arrives will depend greatly on how close is the collaboration between research workers in medicine and those who work in the sciences on which medicine depends. The physician has long believed on the chemist for curative drugs, and on the physicist for diagnostic instruments and healing rays. In the one field new materials and in the other new devices are being produced in increasing numbers, helping to make imminent new miracles of medicine.

The X-ray and the microscope have extended the vision of the medical observer until he can see through ten inches of living flesh or into a single tissue cell, yet similar but much more powerful tools await development. Modern electrical devices enable him to listen to faint murmurings of the life processes, or to measure feeble currents arising from heart and brain and nerve; yet electrical body measurements are but little understood. Now newly discovered atomic rays are being brought to help him destroy malignant invaders of the human system, and there is every reason to believe that even more curative rays await discovery.

21.It can be inferred from the opening sentence of the first paragraph that medical

23.The word “malignant” in Para.2 could best be replaced by ________.

A. harmless

B. deadly

C. effective

medicine.

b)The cooperation between researchers in medicine and in the related science

will bring about a “golden age of healing”.

c)The X-ray and the microscope have been of little help in uncovering truth.

d)Medical workers fully understand electrical body measurements.

25.The primary purpose of this passage is _________.

a)to persuade people to use the X-ray and the microscope

b)to keep people aware of the principal tools of the physician

c)to advise people to have a routine physical check-up

d)to describe the development of medicine

Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness. As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and into public places, some of the country’s most talented artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collection of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms.

These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970’s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.

A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.

The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyards. The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.

26.According to the passage, “to soften the hard edges of modern buildings” (in para.

1) means _________.

a)to pull down hospital buildings

b)to improve the quality of treatment in hospital

c)to decorate hospital with art collections

d)to make the corners of hospital building round

27.What can we say of Peter Senior?

a)He is a doctor interested in painting.

b)He is an artist who has a large collection of paintings.

c)He is a pioneer in introducing art into hospitals.

d)He is a faithful follower of hospital art.

28.According to Peter Senior, ________.

a)art should be encouraged in British hospitals

b)art is losing its audience in modern society

c)art galleries should be changed into hospitals

d)patients should be encouraged to learn painting

29. After the improvement of the hospital environment, _________.

A.patients no longer need drugs in their recovery

B.patients are no longer wholly dependent on expensive drugs

C.patients need good-quality drugs in their recovery

D.patients use fewer pain killers in their recovery

30. The fact that six young art school graduates joined Peter shows that ________.

B.Peter Senior enjoys great popularity

C.They are talented hospital artists

D.The role of hospital environment is being recognized

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

An exclusive Reader’s Digest MORL survey shows that the total number of offenses may be twice as high as the Government claims.

Boyle, a driver on the London Underground, was strolling home on a winter’s evening when a young man asked him for a light for his cigarette. As Boyle, a stocky, amiable 39-year-old, searched his pickets, a second youth emerged from the shadows and jumped on his back, knocking him to the ground. “I bounced straight back up without thinking, probably from shock, ” recalls Boyle, “and found myself confronted by these two blokes. So I hit one of them. To my amazement, they ran away.”

The attack was sadly predictable, especially on the estates of east London where Boyle has lived all his life. What happened next is also increasingly predictable: instead of struggling to the nearest telephone to report the attempted mugging to the police, Boyle dusted himself down and went home for his tea.

“I got a good look at the youths and would recognize them again,” he says, “But I could not give the police a good enough description to make sure they were caught. Anyway, the officers world not have been interested. We hardly see a policeman around here from one week to the next and when I have reported crimes in the past nothing has been done.”

Those crimes include theft from his car, damage to the vehicle when a car

reversed into it, the theft of one of his sons’bikes, and theft and vandalism he has witnessed at work.

Boyle’s experiences are commonplace in modern Britain. Every day, thousands of people are attacked, threatened or traumatized by crime, yet fail to report these ordeals.

D.Nobody had done that in the past

34. Boyle suffered all the following crimes except _________.

A.an attempted mugging

B.theft from his car.

C.Theft of his son’s bike

D.vandalism

35. This passage mainly tells us that in Britain _________.

A.many people fail to report the crimes they suffer.

B.Crimes are popular.

C.People are constantly attacked

D.People are likely to suffer from crimes

Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Elderly people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more confused and more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary. At the same time it is also important that you don’t make them feel like children.

Failing memory makes it very difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. The information has to be constantly repeated to make up for the poor memory. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and straightforward.

Confused old people need aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use and refer to reminder boards or diaries for important forthcoming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers.

Reading Comprehension (20’) Passage 1 Libraries have traditionally been the public `s access to the important sources of information that are necessary to function in today `s highly technical world. That function has been called into question by the fast-paced development of digital media over the past several decades. In order to continue to fulfill the public interest, libraries everywhere are forced to develop means of granting access to these expensive new services to average citizens. In the past, the publishing industry maintained the rights of the libraries to freely distribute published materials because the libraries bought so many of their books. Because the new electronic publication can easily be copied in their entirety by the patrons of library, the publishing industry is reconsidering its former advocacy of the library system. There have even been attempts to stop libraries from distributing digital media. In addition to waning(衰落的) cooperation of the publishing industry, there is the problem that the newer forms of information are much more specialized than those which they replace. Deciding how to divert already limited resources is increasingly difficult as the options multiply. Whereas a single reference index may have covered an entire field in the past, now there are frequently several specialized indexes available in electronic form. In order to continue to make use of the newer technology, the libraries must decide which materials are most useful to the majority of their patrons. There are many different solutions being applied, but only the process of trial and error will determine the most effective strategy. 21. The best title for this text would be ____ A. The Challenge for Today `s libraries B. Information Technology and the Consumer C. The Benefits of the Digital Revolution D. Changes in Information Technology 22. It can be inferred that the problem with the new technology is that _____ A. it is not intended for use by libraries B. it is too complicated C. it is not as useful as traditional books D. it is used as a political tool 23.
