The RL78 family consists of a complete lineup of products with memory sizes selectable from 2 KB to 512 KB and packages sizes ranging from 20 to 128 pins. RL78 family products can be used in a wide range of fields, including consumer products, automotive applications, industrial machines, and

communication devices, and all products are developed by using the same platform, providing compatibility and scalability within the family. We invite you to select an RL78 family product confident in the knowledge that you can use it for many years to come.

The RL78 incorporates timer units that provide a 16-bit counter and capture/compare register for each timer channel.

Timers can be operated individually as well as in interlocking units to enable a range of other features such as one-shot pulse and PWM signal output.

The RL78 includes a single-channel 3-wire serial interface and simplified I 2C interface, each of which is provided with a shift register and buffer register.

Two full-duplex UART channels are also available.

The A/D converter in the RL78/G13 can operate on a voltage as low as 1.6 V, and the one in the RL78/G12 on a voltage as low as 1.8 V. The conversion resolution can be selected from 8 or 10 bits.

A wide range of conversion modes are available, including scan mode, one-shot conversion mode, and successive conversion mode.Conversion can be started based on a software condition or a hardware trigger.

Data can be transferred directly between peripheral hardware SFRs and the internal RAM based on interrupts from timers, serial interfaces, or the A/D converter, or based on a software trigger, without going via the CPU.

The watchdog timer detects a hung program.

Three possible WDT window settings are available and can be selected to suit your system.

The LVD monitors the voltage and generates a reset or interrupt signal depending on the current mode.By using a new interrupt and reset mode, the LVD can also initiate data-save processing by generating an interrupt before issuing the reset signal.

The power-on-reset circuit ends a reset once the power supply voltage reaches the detection voltage level, and generates the internal reset signal if the power supply voltage drops below the detection voltage level. In the most common operating modes, the RL78 family delivers an operating current of 70 μA/MHz (while operating at 32 MHz) and a standby current of 0.7 μA (in sub-halt mode, with the RTC and LVD operating).

The RL78 family also provides a power-saving snooze mode in which A/D conversion and serial communication can continue while the CPU is on standby, with the CPU only being woken up when required. This mode is excellent for battery-powered systems as it greatly increases the battery life.

Low power consumption with 16-bit microcontroller performance

By using a new process, improving the internal oscillator configuration, and optimizing the logic circuit, we have developed microcontrollers that offer one of the lowest power consumption ratings in the industry.

Using our microcontrollers makes it possible to reduce the power consumed by overall systems.

Newly developed snooze mode during which A/D conversion and data reception are possible even while the CPU is stopped.

Our new snooze mode is a power saving mode that is entered from the stop mode (during which the clock is stopped) and makes it possible to leave the CPU stopped while vibrating the oscillator and using peripherals.

This mode reduces the power consumption, and, because the system does not have to wait for the CPU to wake up when serial data is received, the first data is not lost.

RL78 family products feature components such as a precision internal oscillator with an accuracy of 1%, a data flash

memory that can be overwritten 1 million times and that can operate in the background, a temperature sensor, and

ports for interfacing with different power supplies. Developed by using a new 130 nm process, the RL78 family not

only reduces system costs, but also helps reduce the size of your system.

The RL78 family uses the 78K0R high-performance architecture—highly popular due to its high

performance and low power consumption—and proven R8C and 78K peripherals, allowing you to

continue using current 78K and R8C software assets.

We provide many development environments corresponding to each development phase.
