第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists :Scientist A : I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it

will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of theworld’s problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives , but whether that is true

will be partly up to us.

Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can

match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now , scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future , their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term , there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs , creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term machines might decide the world would be better without human. Scientist C: I’m a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls(头骨)and think of what’s happening right now: military machines like drones , gun turrets and sentry robots are already b eing used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots ”following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be completely unethical and dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.

21. What is Scientist B worried about?

A. AI technology will destroy the earth.

B. Robots will take the place of humans.

C. Computers can’t think by themselves.

D. Humans will be unhappy without machines.

22. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. “Murderbots” will be against humans’ orders.

B. The movie image of a terrifying Terminator.

C. “Murderbots” can’t decide by themselves.

D. The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

23. Which statement is CORRECT according to the record?

A. Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop.

B. All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings.

C. “Murderbots” will follow the orders of their manufacturers in the wars.

D. The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future.

There’s no denying that learning a foreign language is difficult, and when it comes to speaking the language , it can be extremely tough. I remember walking into my first-ever Spanish class at university only to discover that half of my classmates were already fluent in multiple languages. It’s safe to say I fett out of my depth!

At first the thought of speaking Spanish terrified me; not only were my vocabulary and Grammar very limited , but I had n ever spoken another language before. However, I was determined to overcome my fear , and by adopting a few simple methods I have been able to build

my confidence and make progress. In fact , it was not as terrible as I thought. Here , I think I will share a few tips with you.

Firstly , it is OK to make mistakes for language learners and that you should accept them. This sounds obvious , but when it comes to language learning we often aim for perfection and feel as though we are not ready to speak until we have“enough” words or grammatical knowledge. The

truth is that you will never feel ready , and instead it is important to use the knowledge to communicate what you can.

This leads on to my next tip: don’t compare yourself to others. This can be a hard one , especially if you are in a large language class. It is important to remember that we all learn at different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone to practice with whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish made me feel much more confident.

Lastly, celebrate the small successes and remember how far you have come . Instead of focusing on how far you have to go focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements .

24. What does the underlined part suggest in the passage?

A. The author took great pride in his classmates.

B. The author wanted to leave university immediately.

C. The author failed to join in his classmates’ conversation.

D. The author was unable to speak many languages.

25. What is the common barrier for language learners?

A. They fail to have a good command of grammar.

B. They lack courage to speak the language.

C. They can’t help comparing themselves to others.

D. They can’t use the language in right situations.

26. What’s the best way to learn Spanish in the author’s opinion?

A. Find a partner whose Spanish is excellent.

B. Set long-term goals to improve enthusiasm.

C. Learn from an example and pick out weak points.

D. Choose a language exchange partner at the same level.

27. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Mastering Spanish is a chance in a million.

B. Learning a new language is not so hard.

C. Confidence is the key to speaking a language.

D. Don’t ignore what you have achieved in learning.

A 4. 3-metre dog-eating python(巨蟒) , whichwas captured(捕获)byDave Willott,50,in Sai Kung Country Park and was viewed more than 150,000 times on Facebook, has been put to death despite appeals for it to be spared.

The snake was caught after it attacked baseball player Karl Davies while he walked his dogs on

a popular path on June 15. Davies, who is British and plays baseball with the Yankees team in New York, spent six hours in hospital after the python attacked him.

Despite his injuries , Davies,49 , returned to the scene of the attack 48 hours later with Willott and helped catch the 23 kg python.

The python —named Kaa by Davies and Willott —is believed to be responsible for a string of attacks on dogs in recent years and was handed over to Kadoorie Farmand Botanic Garden. Both

men appealed for the female python to be kept alive, but Kaa was put to death over a fortnight

after its capture.

A spokeswoman for the Agriculture,Fisheries and Conservation Department(AFCD)said , ) A number of tests were carried out to check its health condition, and it was found to have been suffering a serious disease, which was probably age-related. Due to its falling health condition , the python was put to sleep early this month.

While Willott accepted Kaa needed to be relocated because of its long history of attacking pet dogs along the path, the experienced python catcher said he believed snakes were too often moved unnecessarily. Evidence suggested that relocating snakes often led to their deaths as they were unable to survive in unfamiliar conditions, he said.

“When I offered my services to the police 20 years ago, I thought I was doing a good thing,”Willott added. “Unfortunately all I have done is put hundreds of snakes to a slow death from starvation. The AFCD will not allow any python to be released back where it was caught, and at

least Kaa was killed painlessly and didn’t starve to death. ”

28. What do we know about Karl Davies?

A. He is a sportsman.

B. He enjoys walking alone.

C. He sees pythons frequently.

D. He is unfamiliar with the path.

29. Why did Karl Davies return to the scene of the attack?

A. To take a video.

B. To get to know Willott.

C. To try to provide assistance.

D. To warn passers-by of the python.

30. Why was Kaa put to death?

A. It was a potential threat to people.

B. It made a series of attacks on dogs.

C. It could not get used to the wild.

D. It was not expected to live long.

31. How did Dave Willott feel about relocating snakes?

A. Relieved.

B. Guilty.

C. Satisfied.

D. Anxious.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, artificial limbs(四肢),musical instruments and toy models. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily by using 3D printers.

But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying to reform the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as ordinary as having

the microwave or dishwasher. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to select a recipe and put the raw “food inks” into the printer. You can also modify the instructions to make

the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also save the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a

lot more efficient. P rinting food could also help people who suffer from dysphagia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite food so that they would swallow it more easily.

However, some people think that a future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there is no need for farming or growing crops and that the same taste and texture could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional

and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and that meals can be created at the touch of a button.

32. What does the underlined word “modify” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Change.

B. Replace.

C. Delete.

D. Follow.

33. What5s the advantage of using 3D printing in the kitchen?

A. It is as cheap as a microwave.

B. You need no special raw food.

C. It is environmentally friendly.

D. You no longer need a recipe.

3). What if 3Dprinters walk into everybody’s life?

A. It probably will weaken family bonds.

B. It probably will make cafes and restaurants disappear.

C. It probably will have a bad effect on people.

D. It will be easy for people to get soft and liquid food.

35. Which is the proper title for the passage?

A. Favorite Food Comes from 3D Printing

B. Food Printing: the Future of Cooking?

C. 3D Printing Becomes Popular in the World

D. Cooking Skills vs 3D Printing Technology

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

A It’s rare that you see the words “shyness” and “letter” in the same sentence. After all,the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not.A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership.Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands.Bill Gates,Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies". Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking,shy people take a cautious approach to chance.Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say.Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard. Being shy can also bring other benefits.Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in?Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image. Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations. Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1.
