With the tears streaming down her face, she put her two hands to her lips, and kissed them to Him; then clasped(紧握着)them on her breast,as if she laid his ruined head there.

“You are not the gaoler’s(监狱长)daughter ?”

She sighed“No. ”

“Who are you ?”

Not yet trusting the tones of her voice, she sat down on the bench beside him.He drew back

but she laid her hand upon his arm.A strange thrill struck him when she did so, and visibly passed

over his frame; he laid the knife down softly,as he sat staring at her.

Her golden hair, which she wore in long curls, had been hurriedly pushed aside, and fell down

over her neck.Advancing his hand by little and little,he took it up and looked at it.In the middle

of the action he went astray, and, with another deep sigh, fell to work at his shoemaking.

But lot for long.Releasing his arm,she laid her hand upon his shoulder. After looking doubtfully at it,two or three times,as if to be sure that it was really there,he laid down his work,

put his hand to his neck, and took off a blackened string with a scrap of folded rag attached to it.

He opened this, carefully,on his knee, and it contained a very little quantity of hair:not more than

one or two long golden hairs, which he had,in some old day, wound on upon his finger.

He took her hair into his hand again, and looked closely at it.“It is the same. How can it be!

When was it!How was it!”

As the concentrating expression returned to his forehead,he seemed to become conscious that

it was in hers too.He turned her full to the light, and looked at her.“She had laid her head upon my shoulder, that night when I was summoned(传唤)out—she

had a fear of my going, though I had none—and when I was brought to the North Tower they

found these upon my sleeve.‘You will leave me them? They can never help me to escape in the

body, though they may in the spirit.’Those were the words I said.I remember them very well. ”

He formed this speech with his lips many times before he could utter it.But when he did find

spoken words for it,they came to him coherently(连贯地),though slowly.“How was this?一Was it you? ”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项。

A report consistently brought back by visitors to the US is how friendly, courteous and helpful most Americans were to them.To be fair, this observation is also frequently made of Canada and Canadians, and should best be considered North American. There are,of course,exceptions.Small-minded officials, rude waiters, and ill-mannered taxi drivers are hardly unknown in the US.Yet it is an observation made so frequently that it deserves comment. For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence.

Dullness and loneliness were common problems of the families who generally lived distant from one another.Strangers and travelers were welcome sources of diversion, and brought news of the outside world. The harsh realities of the frontier also shaped this tradition of hospitality.

Someone traveling alone,if hungry, injured,or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest cabin or settlement. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers. It reflected the harshness of daily life:if you didn‘t take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same

situation.Today there are many charitable organizations which specialize in helping the weary traveler.Yet,the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US,especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist trails.“I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner—amazing.” Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly.

1.In the eyes of visitors from the outside world,___________.

A.rude taxi drivers are rarely seen in the US

B.small-minded officials deserve a serious comment

C.Canadians are not so friendly as their neighbors

D.most Americans are ready to offer help

2.It could be inferred from the last paragraph that ___________.

A.culture exercises an influence over social interrelationship

B.courteous convention and individual interest are interrelated

C.various virtues manifest themselves exclusively among friends

D.social interrelationships equal the complex set of cultural conventions 3.Families in frontier settlements used to entertain strangers ___________.

A.to improve their hard life

B.in view of their long-distance travel

C.to add some flavor to their own daily life

D.out of a charitable impulse

4.The tradition of hospitality to strangers ___________.

A.tends to be superficial and artificial

B.is generally well kept up in the united States

C.is always understood properly

D.has something to do with the busy tourist trails

5.What’s the author’s attitudes toward the American‘s friendliness?

A.Favorable.B.Unfavorable.C.Indifferent.D.Neutral.

Barefoot and dirty, the girl just sat and watched the people go by.She never tried to speak. Many people passed, but never did one person stop.

Today I was to make my own move and walk over to the little girl.As we all know,a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone.

As I began walking towards her,I could see the back of the little girl’s dress indicated a deformity(畸形).I smiled to let her know it was okay,I was there to help,to talk.I sat down beside her and opened with a simple “Hello”.I smiled and she shyly smiled back.We talked until darkness fell and the park was completely empty.I asked the girl why she was so sad.The little girl looked at me and with a sad face said,“Because I’m different.”

I was speechless,sure I was seeing things.She said,“For once you thought of

someone other than yourself,my job here is done.”

Immediately I stood to my feet and said,“Wait,so why did no one stop to help an angel!?” She looked at me and smiled,“You’re the only one who could see me,and you believe it in your heart.”…and she was gone.

F.Recognize when people disrespect you and take steps to stop it.

How to Respect Yourself

A lack of self-respect can prevent you from fulfilling your potential and developing healthy relationships. Here are some steps to help you know how to respect yourself. 1.________ The qualities that we respect vary from person to person, and the way we express it varies from culture to culture.Generally,we respect people who have more experience and are more accomplished than ourselves. But there is also a basic level of respect that most people will agree is a right, and does not need to be earned. So think about what it means to respect others. Here are some widely agreed-upon signals of respect: You don't steal from, harm,or insult them; you are honest with them; you listen to what they say, consider their opinions, and avoid interrupting them.

2.________ We often do things for ourselves that we would never dream of doing for someone we care about.Whatever you believe to be respectful, apply it to yourself.Don't harm yourself.Don't insult yourself.Don't steal from yourself.Be honest with yourself.Develop your own opinions and don't be afraid to stand by them. 3.________ A person with self-respect doesn't allow others to treat them badly, and would rather not be around someone who is disrespectful. This might seem obvious, but there are many times when we accept being treated badly. When someone doesn't give you basic respect, you need to be able to say,in one way or another,“You just disrespected me and that's not acceptable! If you don't respect me,I won't spend time with you any more.” Can you say that, and mean it? Can you turn your back on someone who's clearly shown that they don't respect you? Once you do,you'll feel your sense of self-respect go up.

4.________ When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you'll not only feel better physically, but also feel a sense of pride.Respecting your body also means not insulting it for what it is,naturally.Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy.Focus on the things you can change and improve, and do them because it feels good.

5.________ The more you know about yourself, the more you'll see and appreciate how unique you really are.And you'll respect yourself more.Discover your principles, personality, and talents.Stop waiting for other people's approval and start developing your own standards.Develop a unique and original way of expressing your opinions while at the same time being a good listener.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

-必修 5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national

But he became inspired when he thought about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly disease of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera killed people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died.
