Every year, over 40,000 students in Britain run a business. “Each business runs for one year,” said Ben, one of the group of students visiting Shanghai. ” When we started our business, we borrowed money from parents and friends. At the end of the year, these people will receive some of the profits.” I asked Ben if running a business was difficult. He said that it was no problem. He said that they always received a lot of advice from teachers and business people.

Another member of the group, Regina, told me the four questions they always asked themselves. The questions are:

What do people want to buy?

Where is a good place to sell the product?

How is our product better than other products?

How much is the product?

I also wanted to know how the group was organized. Regina said that there were usually about five to seven students in each business and among them are one manager and one accountant(会计). I asked them who was the manager.“I am, of course,”said Regina.

“It was my idea to produce picture books,” she said. “They have been very popular with the other students.” I also asked the students what other people sold. “Other groups in our school sell things like T-shirts, videos and computer games,” said Ben.

“How much money do the businesses usually make?” I asked.“Some businesses make $ 20,000-30,000, but most groups make a small profit of about $ 1,000-3,000,” said Regina. I asked them what they did with the profits. “We can do what we like with the profits.” However, Regina told me that it was important not to waste the money. Mrs. John Brown (John’s mother): When he was young, John was always writing. He wrote in bed; he wrote while the rest of us were watching television, in the half darkness; he would even write at the breakfast table if I let him. He was a very quiet boy. It doesn’t matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.

Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.

The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his

mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.

Herpin died at the age of 94.

()49. The doctors came to Herpin’s home in order to ______.

A. treat him for his illness

()52. The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A. large numbers of people do not need sleep

B. everyone needs some sleep to stay alive

C. people can live longer by trying not to sleep at all

D. a person was found who actually didn’t need any sleep

D

If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. Usually, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.

Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.

“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.

“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers answered excitedly.

The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar full of spiders, worms and a lot of insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing at them. Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look at what we have found along the way!”

Their goal was far too difficult, but it made them dig. And that is what a goal is for—to make us move in the direction we have chosen. In other words, it sets us to digging!

But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I have found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!” And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.

()53. The writer told us the story to ________ .

A. advise us to treat our failures fairly

B. persuade us to make an aim for our lives

C. encourage us to learn from the two brothers

D. prove that failure helps us make achievements

()54. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Failure is the mother of success.

B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

C. No pains, no gains.

D. Joy in the journey.

()55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Digging a hole all the way through the earth is impossible.

B. The writer thinks that the two brothers will reach their goal one day.

C. A goal is something that makes us want to dig holes.

D. Everyone can succeed if he sets a practical goal.
