第一节:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A, C B,,D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

THE bright eyes turned dull (呆滞的) and blank, quickly becoming uninterested because I could not properly answer any of their questions. My face flushed red with embarrassment (尴尬), as I stood up at the front of the class unprepared and incompetent (无能的).

This was the very first time I taught my math class. My math class is extremely special: We have a new style of learning that involves (使参与) us teaching instead of our teacher. My teacher realized that we would work hard to know the material very well if we were able to teach it, so our class was divided into four groups with each group assigned a topic. Each week, within the group, we take turns and teach parts of the topic.

My group’s topic was probability and statistics (概率和统计), and my first part was geometric (几何的) probability. I wrote my lesson plan as I was supposed to, learning briefly and vaguely (含糊地) from the book. I figured that it would be pretty simple. Wrong! When I was questioned about how each formula (公式) works, I completely drew a blank. I never asked myself these questions, and so I never learned the material in depth. I was completely caught off guard when asked these questions.

That night, when I got home, I reread my chapter. I analyzed, researched, and gave deep consideration to each section of my subunit. I drew graphs and considered how to express what I needed to in a way that would be better understood by the students. I then realized that being a teacher was a whole lot more work than I originally imagined –teachers have to understand the material 200 percent and predict any weird (奇怪的) or different question that a student may ask.

During the unit that my group taught, I grew a lot emotionally. I learned how best to adapt my own teaching style to fit the learning curve (曲线) of the class, and I slowly grew more and more able to predict what was needed of me and what kind of questions would be posed. I grew more mature (成熟的) and understanding of others’ needs, and I learned how to think in more creative ways. I am so thankful that my teacher insisted on this style of learning, and teaching my math class is an experience I will never forget.

Judging from recent surveys, most experts in sleep behaviour agree that there is virtually an epidemic (流行病)of sleepiness in the nation. “I can’t think of a single study that hasn’t found Americans getting less sleep than they ought to,”says Dr. David. Even people who think they are sleeping enough would probably be better off with more rest.

The beginning of our sleep-deficit (lack)crises can be traced back to the invention of the light bulb a century ago. From diary entries and our personal accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have reached the conclusion that the average person used to sleep about 9. 5 hours a night. ―The best sleep habits once were forced on us, when we had nothing to do in the evening down on the farm, and it was dark.‖ By the 1950s and 1960s, the sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically, to between 7. 5 and 8 hours, and most people had to wake to an alarm clock. ―People cheat in their sleep, and they don’t even realize they’re doing it,‖ says Dr. David. ―They think they’re okey because they can get by on 6. 5 hours, when they really need 7. 5, 8 or even more to feel ideally energetic. ‖

Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researchers say, is the complexity of the day. Whenever pressures from work, family, friends and community increase, many people

consider sleep the least expensive item on their programme. ―In our society , you’re considered dynamic if you say you need only 5. 5 hours’ sleep. If you’ve got to get 8. 5 hours, people think you lack drive and ambition. ‖

To determine the consequences of sleep-deficit, researchers have put subjects through a set of psychological and performance tests requiring them, for instance, to add columns of numbers or recall a passage read to them only minutes earlie r. ―We’ve found that if you’re in sleep deficit, performance suffers,‖ says Dr. David. ―Short -term memory is weakened, as are abilities to make decisions and to concentrate.‖ 31. What is the main topic of the passage?

A. Research on the causes and consequences of sleep-deficit.

B. The epidemic of sleepiness in the modern times.

C. The history of people’s sleeping patterns.

D. The minimum of our sleeping hours. 32. Which of the following is Dr . David’s opinion?

A. People who think they are sleeping enough are better off than those who don't.

B. Some people can remain energetic with only 6. 5 hours’ sleep a night.

C. If they get 8. 5 hours’ sleep, people will be full of drive and ambition.

D. People’s metal power suffers if they are lacking in sleep.

33. People in the 18th and 19th centuries slept about 9. 5 hours a night because _______. A. they were forced by their parents to do so B. they knew what was best for their health C. they had no electricity

D. they were not so dynamic and ambitious as modern people are 34. The major cause of sleep-deficit of modern people is _______. A. the endless TV programmes in the evenings and the internet B. the heavy work load of the day

C. the sufficient energy modern people usually have

D. loud noises in the modern cities

35. What does the word “subjects” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Person or thing that is being discussed or described. B. Branch of knowledge studied in a school.

C. Person or thing being treated in a certain way or being experimented on.

D. Any member of a State apart from the the supreme ruler.

Everyone has heard of the San Andreas fault (断层), which constantly threatens California and the West Coast with earthquakes. But how many people know about the equally serious New Madrid fault in Missouri?

Between December of 1811 and February of 1812, three major earthquakes occurred, all centered around the town of New Madrid, Missouri, on the Mississippi River. Property damage was severe. Buildings in the area were almost destroyed. Whole forests fell at once, and huge cracks opened in the ground, allowing smell of sulfur (硫磺)to filter upward. The Mississippi River itself completely changed character, developing sudden rapids and whirlpools. Several times it changed its course, and once, according to some observers, it actually appeared to run backwards. Few people were killed in the New Madrid earthquakes, probably simply because few people lived in the area in 1811; but the severity of the earthquakes are shown by the fact that the shock waves rang bells in church towers in Charleston, South Carolina, on the coast. Buildings shook in New Y ork City , and clocks were stopped in Washington, D.C.

Scientists now know that America’s two major faults are essentially different. The San Andreas is a horizontal boundary between two major land masses that are slowly moving in opposite directions. California earthquakes result when the movement of these two masses suddenly lurches (倾斜) forward.

The New Madrid fault, on the other hand, is a vertical(垂直的) fault; a some point, possibly hundreds of millions of years ago, rock was pushed up toward the surface, probably by volcanoes under the surface. Suddenly, the volcanoes cooled and the rock collapsed, leaving huge cracks. Even now, the rock continues to settle downwards, and sudden sinking motions trigger (触发) earthquakes in the region. The fault itself, a large crack in this layer of rock, with dozens of other cracks that split off from it, extends from northeast Arkansas through Missouri and into southern lllinois.

Scientists who have studied the New Madrid fault say there have been numerous smaller quakes in the area since 1811; these smaller quakes indicate that larger ones are probably

coming, but the scientists say have no method of predicting when a large earthquake will occur.

36. This passage is mainly about__________.

A. the New Madrid fault in Missouri

B. the San Andreas and the New Madrid faults

C. the causes of faults

D. current scientific knowledge about faults

37. This passage implies that ________.

A. horizontal faults are more dangerous than vertical faults

B. vertical faults are more dangerous than horizontal faults

C. a lot of people would die if the 1811 New Madrid earthquakes happened today

D. the volcanoes that caused the New Madrid fault are still alive.

38. We may conclude from the passage that__________.

A. it is probably as dangerous to live in Missouri as in California

B. the New Madrid fault will eventually develop a mountain range in Missouri

C. California will become an island in future

D. A big earthquake will occur to California soon

39. Which of the following pictures best describes the type of the New Madrid fault?

A

40. As used in the first sentence of the fourth paragraph, the word “essentially”

means____ .

A greatly
