The holiday of Christmas, which millions of Americans and others around the world celebrate today, has inspired many such tales. Some deal with the lessons of generosity and hope, others with 13 of friendship, family and faith.

Tradition is as much a part of the holiday as is its spirit. 第—节阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.

Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出)

the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer laying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap(舔) up the water cupped in my bea utiful boy’s han D.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

C.All the crops in the area were dead. D.People were in great need of rain. 57.Billy walked carefully to the woods because ______.

A.he was not old enough to walk freely B.he didn’t want to be followed by his mother

C.he tried not to spill the water in his hands D.he wanted to attract hi s mother’s attention

58.Why did the writer almost scream for Billy to get away?

A.Because she saw the most amazing site in the woods

B.Because those large deer appeared dangerous

C.Because she saw a baby deer laying on the ground

D.Because the deer suffered from heavy loss of water

59.After learning about the truth, the author felt _______.

Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international competitions encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatreD.There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhooD.Not only was

there the tragic incident including the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by incidents caused mainly by smaller national contests.

One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were sure that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their oppon ents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛)of the team for at least three years.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism(爱国主义).

61.According to the author, recently the Olympic Games have ______.

A.created goodwill between the nations B.brought about only false national pride C.hardly showed any international friendship D.put an end to misunderstanding and hatred

62.The underlined word “disallowed” (in Paragraph 2) means “______”.

A.permitted to pass B.considered as reasonable

C.won by the other side D.refused to accept

A.His team would no longer take part in international games.

B.Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.

C.There should be no more Hockey matches organized by the Federation.

D.The Federation should break up.

64.The author gives the example in paragraph 2 to show ______.

A.how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international games

B.that sportsmen are often against the final decisions

C.that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship

D.that unfair decisions are common in the Olympic Games

65.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

B.Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.

C.A game should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.

D.More and more athletes will compete for their own honor.

The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.

The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.

Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.

Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.

These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarkeD.The king of China around 1000 B.C.was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.

66.The best title for the passage would be “________”. Ks5u

A.Development of the National Flag B.Power of the National Flag

C.Types of Flags D.Uses of Flags

67.The underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A.impossible to make sure of B.likely to be protected

C.easy to be damaged D.difficult to find

68.The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because ________.

A.they could tell direction

B.they could bring good luck to ancient fighters

C.they were handed down by the ancestors

D.they were believed to stand for natural forces

69.What does the author know of the first national flag?

A.He knows when it was sent to Europe. B.He believes it was made in Egypt.

C.He thinks it came from China. D.He doubts where it started.

70.What will the author most probably talk about next?

C.The use of modern flags in Europe. D.The importance of modern flags.

第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)

根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡

Speaking to a group can be difficult, but listening to a bad speech is truly a tiresome task—especially when the speaker is confusing. Don’t want to confuse your audience? Follow these suggestions:

71.When it comes to understanding new information, the human brain needs a little time. First, we hear the words; then, we compare the new information to what we already know. If the two are different, we need to pause and think. But a breathless speaker never stops to let us think about what he or she is saying and risks confusing us. Slow it.

72.Sometimes we all start a sentence one way and then switch directions, which is very difficult to follow. When you confuse your listeners with opposing information, you leave the audience wondering what part of the information is right and what part they should remember. Instead of relying and keeping correcting yourself, work to get the facts clear and straight.

73.Jumping from point to point as it comes to your mind puts the onus (责任)on your listeners to make up for your lack of organisation. And it’s confusing for them to listen, reorganise, and figure out what you’re saying all at once. But going smoothly from one point to the next helps them understand information more easily. You can arrange things from beginning to end, small to large, top to bottom or by some other order. Just be sure to organise. 74.Repeated use of um, ah, like, you know and some other useless noises can drive an audience crazy. It makes the speaker sound uncertain and unprepared, and it can leave listeners so annoyed that they can’t pay attention. Recently I attended a speech that was marked by so many ums that audience members were rolling their eyes. Was anybody grasping the intended message? Um, probably not.

75.Many speakers finish up their speeches with question-and-answer (Q & A) sessions, but some let the Q & A go on without a clear enD.The audience is often left confused about whether the meeting is over and when they can get up and leave. Do your listeners a favour by setting

a time limit on questions, and close your speech with a specific signal—even if it’s something

simple like, “If you have any more questions, you know where to reach me.” Or even more to the p oint, conclude your speech with “Thanks for your time.”
