My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship to a private school. It’s only a small discount, but the scholarship means she’ll sip the waiting list ---provided my husband and I can cover $20,000 a year.

If we’re to send our girl to private scho ol, I could increase my wor hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticet to a good job and a solid income, but that’s not quite how it turned out.

It’s taen me a little longer, but now I’m content. More than my fancy private school education, it’s my family that shaped me. Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Mily Way (银河系)? While the trip sounds eciting, it would tae years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eyes. They would have to sleep for years.

European researchers are now conducting hibernation eperiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would tae for a spaceflight to distant planets. "If there was an effective technology, it could mae deep space travel a reality," said Mar Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.

What seems lie a science fiction is not completely unliely. Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleeplie state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to the small, non-hibernating mammals lie rats.

A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more comple. "It’s lie moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer," said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at I taly’s University of Pavi a. Just lie bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism (新陈代谢) to be a lower level so they would need less energy.

Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter. Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.

According to Ayre, the Human Outer Planets Eploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon (木星的卫星) Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send si persons on a five-year-flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.

A. Cells in different body organs wor in the same way.

B. What wors in cells may be quite difficult for the organs.

C. The hibernation of humans can help save human beings' energy.

D. The deep space travel may be possible if hibernation research is successful.

A. Hibernation and Long Life in Space

B. Welcome to the Mily Way

C. To hibernate, to live longer

D. Hibernation study for space travel

Phantom vibrations---the phenomenon where you thin your phone is vibrating but it's not---have been around since the mobile age. Today, they’re so common that researchers have devoted studies to them.

For Valerie usler, who wors on a cattle farm, the feeling is complicated by the cows. “The cows’ moo is very muffled, it inda sounds lie…errrr,”she says.“So that's very similar to what my phone sounds lie when it vibrates on my des or in my purse.”

“If you'd ased me 10 years ago, or maybe even five years ago if I felt an itch beneath where my pocet of my jeans was, and ased me what I would do, I'd reach down and scratch it because it was probably a little itch caused by the neurons firing(神经元刺激),” he says. Now, of course, the itch triggers him to reach for his phone. Rosen says it's an eample of how our devices are changing how our brains process information.“we’re seeing a lot of what loos lie obsessive behavior. People who are constantly picing up their phone loo lie they have an obsession. They don't loo much different from someone who's constantly washing their hands. I’m not saying that it is an obsession, but I’m saying that it could turn into one, very easily,” Rosen says.

While 9 out of 10 participants in the study of college students said the vibration feeling bothered them only a little or not at all, Rosen still recommends bacing away from our phones every once in a while to eep our aniety levels down.

“One of the things I’m really adamant about in spite of being very pro-technology, is just away from the technology for short periods,” Rosen says. “And by short periods. I mean, maybe just 30 minutes or an hour”.

2019届上海市各高中名校高三英语题型分类专题汇编--阅读理解B篇--老师版(带答案已校对珍藏版)

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
