It came as a real shock(震惊) to find out that chickens could tell what color they were eating.

I picked up a package of mixed greens one day. I anxiously brought it home and immediately took a trip out to the chicken house to deliver(递送) it. I knew the girls would welcome the treat!

My chickens have their regular gravity-type feeder for their grain(谷物), and I have a large plastic dog dish that I use for those special treats.

I emptied the bag of greens into the dog dish and stood back, as I usually do, to watch for a minute. I began to notice that the chickens were eating the green lettuce(莴苣)but were leaving the red leaves. I though it must be mistaken, but I didn’t have time to find out for sure right then.

When I went back a short time later, the dish was empty except for the red leaves. The chickens didn’t eat them with the red leaves. It took several hours, but they finally did eat it. I guess if they had their druthers(偏爱), they’d choose for green leaves only. Red leaves only satisfy in the absence of greens.

Sarah stood in front of the mirror(镜子). “It looks like a raincoat on me,” she said.

“Perhaps the blue,” said Mama, gently.

“Sure,” the shopkeeper said. But when he took the blue coat, there on the shelf behind all of the dark coats, hidden like a spring flower in winter darkness, there, as if by magic, was a pink coat.

“A pink coat!” Sarah cried. “I want the pink coat.”

“That coat is smaller than the other ones,” Papa said.

Sarah spoke up. “I’m small, too. Papa, please let me try it on, Mama? Please?”

“It wouldn’t hurt to let her try it on,” Mama said.

Without a word, the shopkeeper took the coat from the shelf and held it for Sarah.

“Ohhh!” Sarah said. The coat was smooth and shiny inside like her sister Sylvia’s blouses. “Ahhh!”Sarah stood very straight and looked in the mirror. She looked for a very long time. In the pink coat she looked like a spring flower.

“Sarah!” Mama said.

Sarah looked up. Mama was standing behind her. She was holding the brown coat.

“I’m afraid the pink coat will only fit one year,” Mama said, taking a step closer.

“And there’s no one to pass it on to,” said Papa.

And the shopkeeper said, “It’s wise to save money.”

Sarah backed away. No one was going to put her into a raincoat again. She wanted to be a flower.

“Sarah!” It was Papa. He came over to her. “You’re old enough to know that you can’t always have your own way,” he said seriously.

“Wise and true,” said the shopkeeper.

Sarah took off the pink coat, slowly.

“It is her colour, though,” Mama said.

“Ahh,” said the shopkeeper. “Anyone can see how the pink of the coat brings out the roses in her face.”Papa looked thoughtful for a moment.

“We are lucky.” continued Mama, “that it is only one little coat for Sarah and not also new coats for Sylvia and Susan and Sa lly.”

Papa looked from the brown coat to the pink coat. “The cows will give milk soon enough,” he said “And how can we let Sarah wear a brown coat when she looks like a flower in this one?”

“Papa!” Sarah cried, putting on the pink coat back, quickly. She threw her arms around Papa’s neck. “33 ” she whispered.

“Like a rose in spring,” Papa said.

Many Chinese people will wonder what presents to get for their moms on Mother's Day,but not many know Mother's Day is actually a festival from overseas.

Mother's Day originated(起源) in America during the early 20th century. The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.

Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact,Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial(孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “Taste Liquid(液体的) Medicine for Mother” tells us the filial virtue(美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like “Song of the Parting Son” by Meng Jiao,a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion.

On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-notes to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily.

Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.

( )1. When did Mothers Day spread to China?

A. In the 1920s.

B. In the 1980s.

C. In the Western Han dynasty.

D. In the Tang dynasty. ( )2. What is the poem of “Song of the Parting Son” mainly about?

A. The filial virtue of Emperor Wen.

B. Caring for the old.

C. Traditional Chinese medicine.

D. A mother's love for her son.

( )3. Mother's Day is popular in China mainly because of________.

A. its wide spread in many countries

B. our ancient stories of respecting parents

C. our traditional cultural values

D. its simple way of expressing love

( )4. What a mother truly wants on Mother's Day may be________.

A. a big dinner

B. a celebration party

C. greetings of the festival

D. expensive presents

For me,one of the greatest pleasures in life is going to watch a great film at the cinema. It's a chance for

me to get away from real life. There's nothing better than being lost in a story unless,of course, someone decides to break down the moment.

Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand.

To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects, someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.

I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo,a film critic at the BBC,experienced a “new low” during a film. He says,“ The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her make-up!”

Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off—a most serious offence(冒犯) !

Of course, when we have paid for a ticket,we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to,but we mustn't forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience, too.

The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen.________.

What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?

( )1. Why does the writer enjoy going to the cinema?

A. It makes him feel like being at home.

B. It gives him a moment to stay away from real life.

C. He prefers watching the films on big screens.

D. He wants to enjoy the cinematic experience.

( )2. What is considered by Simon to be the rudest at a cinema?

A. Using mobile phones.

B. Chatting to their friends.

C. Taking the shoes off.

D. Having drinks and eating popcorn.

( )3.“________” is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 7.

A. Don't break the rules!

B. Manners are important!

C. Just stay at home!

D. It's your choice!

( )4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Popular Cinemas

B. A Serious Problem

C. Cinema Manners

D. An Unpleasant Experience

During the summer holiday, some students might have been busy with traveling, summer camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.

Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.

Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.

At about 6:30 am,they began to sell vegetables. They peddled(吆喝) loudly to attract(吸引) customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.

In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th, which is the following day after

Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.

The exact origin(起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (神父) on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed_up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.

One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.

Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now. ()1. If Christmas Day is on a Saturday, Boxing Day will be celebrated on ________.

Dear mum and dad,

I'm writing this letter to you from the center of Australia. At the moment we're staying near Uluru—that's the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock

are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture.

The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.

Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.

The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down...

Finally, later this evening, we're taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home, it's been a fantastic trip!

The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It's a good chance to work on different activities that you don't have much time to do during the rest of the year.

We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.

Alexis said, “At school, I'm really tired, so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many outdoor activities.”

Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a cafe. She told us, “It's a chance to relax after a hard school year—sleep more, and see my friends more.”

We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored. About half (52%) of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is exactly how it should be.

But not everyone said their summer vacation would be the right balance (平衡) between being busy and relaxing. Many thought that they would be too bored.

By the end of 2019, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone. However, smartphone technology can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it sends us unlimited amounts of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction. Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State university. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction. And these connections form slowly over time. Also, addiction to social media may affect our emotional state. The two professors asked 135 university students about their habit of smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones the most reported higher levels of feeling lonely, depressed and anxious. Peper and Harvey do not blame users for their technology addiction. They believe it is the tech industry's desire to make more money that is to blame for the technology addiction. The researchers warm that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts. But the researchers say that we can limit our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Enk Peper suggests timing off our phones before we sleep or do something important. The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You do not need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest putting limits on the time you spend on social media. If you want to catch up with friends on Facebook, set aside a small amount of time to it. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked!
