TEXT A

INTERVIEWS

People applying for jobs normally send in a copy of their CV. This should be used as a basis for questions from the interviewer.

Interviewers find it useful to ask candidates about the way they behaved in difficult situations

in the past, for example with an angry customer or colleague. These questions allow applicants to explain how they acted in a real-life situations and consequently, give clues as to how they would act again in similar situations. Candidates are likely to tell the truth as speaking from memory leaves little time to invent what happened .On the other hand questions which ask candidates to imagine how they would behave in a situation which they have probably never met are of little or no value, This is because they only provide answers about how candidates would hope to behave, and this might not match the actions they would actually take.

In any interview candidates must be treated fairly, with questions asked in the same manner and with no candidate?s interview lasting considerably longer than any other?s. Candidates should always be given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the interview.

Jan Godley, head of human Resources at Aspley Supermarkets says:‘A company needs staff not only who have the right qualifications and experience, but also who are happy to fit in with the company?s way of doing things. Our managers have to accept the idea that everyone working here is a colleagues (managers are always known by their first names), and that spending time actually in the store with colleagues and customers, rather than in their offices, is part of the job, For management posts, we organize pre-interview group exercises to measure team-working and leadership skills, sometimes along with activities to assess personal qualities.

…In all our interviews we pay attention to body language. It is natural for candidates to show signs of being nervous at an interview but most relax after a few minutes and become more confident. However, if the nervousness continues until the end of the interview, especially when difficult questions are asked, we would begin to have doubts about that candidate. Like all employers, we want to take on staff who are at ease with colleagues and customers so it is important to watch the way candidates behave, as well as listen to what they have to say.?

16 .According to the article, why are questions about a candidate?s past behavior useful?

A They prove the candidate will act appropriately in different circumstances.

B They show the candidate can remember details of the situation.

C They demonstrate how the candidate might act in the future.

17. Why is asking candidates to imagine their reactions to a situation unhelpful?

A Candidates may have no experience of this situation.

B Candidates may act differently in the real-life situation.

C Candidates may never meet such a situation.

18. According to the article,

A candidates should ask questions at the end of the interview.

B interviewers should ask all the candidates the same question.

C interviews should all last for roughly the same length of time.

19. What does Jan Godley say about the managers in her company?

A They must spend some time with customers in the store.

B They must know the first names of all their staff.

C They must spend most of their time in their offices.

20. Management applicants at Aspley Supermarkets are

A asked a number of questions about their personal qualities.

B assessed on their ability to work within a group.

TEXT B

Fifteen years ago Masco, then a small family firm, suddenly began to grow fast. As it grew, the management realized that changes were needed. However, they still wanted to keep the advantages of a small family firm.

Originally, all company staff belonged to either the Production or the Administration department. However, as the firm grew, it became clear that the Administration department was therefore replaced by separate departments: Accounts, Purchasing, Dispatch and Sales. Sales were then further reorganized as Sales and Customer Service. Customer Service now employs more people than any other department in the company.

Most heads of new departments were appointed from inside the company. In the case of Production, Masco recruited someone with experience of working in a much larger firm, who would be able to understand the demands of a fast-growing business. Accounts were the only other department to employ new staff at senior level. Two very experienced people from large companies were recruited to work closely with the existing head of department.

Senior staffs were worried that their work would increase following the changes. In fact, it decreased, because several processes became quicker and easier when staff were given the power to make decisions themselves. On the other hand, some staff were disappointed that promotion did not lead to higher salaries.

Don Bradford, Masco?s Managing Director says, “We?re very pleased with the staff?s response to the changes. We thought it would take at least two years to solve all our problems but after only one year we can already see positive results. It?ll probably be another six months, though, before we feel fully confident. We?ve had a few problems with departments not keeping in close enough contact with each other. On the whole, we?re quite satisfied. Although overheads have increased slightly, the Sales department has brought in a lot of new business and productivity?s up considerably. The future looks good! ”.

TEXT C

What attracts customers? Obviously the quality of a product does, but visual images contribute a great deal. It is not only the image provided by the packaging that counts but the whole corporate identity of the company.

There are now many products and services on the market, which are similar in content though produced by different companies. It is vital, therefore, for a company to distinguish itself from its competitors by having a strong company image, which is immediately recognizable.

Logos are part of this image. They are symbols that often include a name or initials to identify a company. The logo establishes a visual identity for the company, just as different groups of young people express their identity though hairstyles and clothes. All groups from all cultures and throughout the ages have used colors and symbols to show their identity.

In different cultures, different colors carry different meanings. Some colors may be connected with coldness in one culture and with warmth in another; some colors represent life in one culture but death in another. International companies have, therefore, to make sure that their logos will not be misunderstood and misinterpreted in different countries.

The logos of large international companies are instantly recognizable throughout the world. One of the most famous logos is that of Coca Cola. The design of the words “Coca Cola” has not changed since 1886, although the surroundings design has been changed from time to time.

Many companies have, over the years, renewed their logos to fit in with contemporary design and to present more powerful images. Company logos can be emotive and can inspire loyalty by influencing the subconscious. Some logos incorporate an idea of the product; the steering wheel in the Mercedes logo, for example, and the aero plane tail of Alitalia.

Logos are used on letterheads, packaging and brochures as well as on the product itself. They may also appear in newspapers or on television as part of an advertising campaign.

Companies need to have a strong corporate identity. The logo helps to promote this image and fix it in the minds of the consumers. Logos, therefore, need to be original and to have impact and style.

26. What attracts customers?

A The quality of a product does, but audio frequency contributes a great deal.

B The quality of a product does, but visual images play an important role as well

C The quality of a product does, but the atmosphere of a company is also vital

D The visual images do, and the quality has no contribution

27. It is vital for a company to distinguish itself from its competitors by_____.

A restructuring its organization and assets

B creating a very complicated network of sales

C having a strong company image

D buying more advanced machines and employing more talents

28. Logos are part of this image and they?re symbols that often_____.

A include a name or initials to identify a company.

B represent the present of the company.

C manifest that the company is the best one in the industry.

D claim the title of the products

29. International companies have to make sure that their logos_____.

A can show the customers that their products are incomparable

B will not be misinterpreted in different countries.

C are very popular in overseas markets.

D so many products confuse the buyers

30. The logo helps to promote the company?s image of a strong corporate identify and___.

A to fix it in the minds of the consumers

B to enhance the enterprise culture

C to maintain high stock level of the company

D To promote the sales

Part III Cloze (Each item: 1 point. Total: 15 points.) (15 minutes)

Directions: Read the article below and choose the correct word or expression to fill each gap.

Public image refers to how a company is viewed by its customers, suppliers, and stockholders, by the financial community, by the communities in which it operates, and by the federal and local governments. Public image is controllable 31 just as the product, price, place, and promotional efforts are.

A firm?s public image 32 a vital role in the attractiveness of the firm and its products to employees, customers, 33 to such outside as stockholders, suppliers, creditors, government officials, as well as diverse special groups. With some things it is 34 to satisfy all the diverse publics: for example, a new highly automated plant may meet the approval of creditors and stockholders, but 35 will undoubtedly find resistance from employees who see 36 threatened. On the other hand, high quality products and service standards should bring almost complete approval,

37 low quality products and false claims would be widely looked down upon.

A firm?s public image, 38 it is good, should be treasured and protected. It is a valuable asset

that usually is built up over a long and satisfying relationship of a firm with its publics. If a firm has 39 a quality image, this is not easily countered or imitated by competitors. 40 an image may enable a firm to charge higher prices, to woo the best distributors and dealers, to attract the best employees, to expect the 41 favorable creditor relationships and lowest borrowing costs. It should also allow the firm?s stock to command a higher price-earning ratio than 42 firms in the same industry without such a good reputation and public image.

43 of factors affect the public image of a corporation. 44 include physical facilities, contacts of outsiders with company employees, product quality and dependability, prices 45 competitors, customer service, the kind of advertising and the media and programs used, and the use of public relations and publicly.
