阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从36~55各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选

出最佳选项。

We’ve all heard the quote, ‘Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.’

Six months after my 36 died, I was sinking in the quicksand of sadness. In that moment, I actually believed that my life was more 37 than anyone else around me. Life handed me a perfectly wrapped lesson that opened my eyes to the fact that through my 38 I had allowed myself to become blinded by my self-pity.

The 39 presented itself in a health crisis. I had problems from a medical procedure (程序) and 40 in hospital for four days.

The first three nights, the same nurse took care of me and 41 communicated with me at all the first two nights, 42 to give me medicine as scheduled. She 43 had no idea how much emotional pain I was in. I regarded her as a bad nurse who had little 44 , and remained

45 in my own emotional and physical pain.

The 46 night the young nurse became a little talkative. She asked me how I was feeling (finally!). I told her that I was 47 with depression and sadness because my husband had died in an airplane accident.

She looked at me and told me that her husband had died too, just two months earlier.

I was speechless and 48 .

49 , in any of the possibilities of why this nurse was so 50 from me, did

I even consider that she might be in the same pain as I was. Not only was she 51 as I was, but she was having to take care of me, instead of caring for herself and her family.

We went on to talk and share our stories about our 52 husbands. I like to think that we helped each other a bit that night.

This experience was a life-changing event for me. I had always 53 myself on being an empathetic(able to share others’feelings) person, but I realize now I had

not really understood what being empathetic meant. To truly be empathetic, you must be able to see 54 your own pain to be witness to the pain. I never looked at another person in the same way after this experience.

Always take the time to be kind even when you’re suffering with your own pain. And don’t assume that someone else has it easier than you. You never know the 55 someone else is fighting.

In our daily conversation, we often come across silence, and you may feel puzzled about its exact meaning sometimes. The meaning of silence varies from culture to culture. Silence may be thoughtful, or it may be empty when a person has nothing to say. Silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.

Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communication among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be indicated is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a symbol of reflection.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by their superior rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Thai cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily.

A nurse who understands the curing value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

59. What does the author say about silence in conversations?

A. It suggests anger and conflict between people.

B. It promotes friendship and understanding.

C. It depends on which country talkers are from.

D. It is based on the situation of the conversation.

60. Which of the following is the right match for the country and its meaning of silence?

a. China

b. France

c. Mexico

d. Thailand

① agreement ② disagreement ③ respect ④ reflection

A. a—②; b—③;c—①; d—④

B. a—④; b—①;c—②; d—③

C. a—①; b—②; c—③; d—④

D. a—③; b—④; c—①; d—②

61. According to the writer, what should nurses do when patients are silent?

A. Ignore the silence as patients wish not to embarrass them.

B. Break the silence as early as possible by comforting them.

C. Research the possible harm of silence done to patients.

D. Use the silence to cure them, based onpatients’ needs.

The Metropolis Transport team at Portsmouth University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.

The latest scientific research shows that giving up driving is one of the main reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more lonely and inactive.

Led by Professor Phillips, the Portsmouth team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.

These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night visual systems and intelligent speed controls. ProfessorP hillips explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone, whose children are busy with their work or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”

“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reacti ons slow down and this often results in people avoiding any possibly challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”

Dr Thomas Blood, the leading researcher o n the older driver study, explains, “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to handle these problems.”

“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always g o slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control t heir speed as a way of preventing that.” Dr Thomas Blood added.

“We hope that our work will help with technological solution s to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”

62. The DriveLAB was set up with the intention of _______.

A. exploring newmeans of transport for aged people

B. designing new types of cars for the old passengers

C. developing cars to help the old to drive confidently

D. teachingold people how to avoid traffic accidents

63. According to Professor Phillips, driving is important for older people because

_______.

A. it helps them go where they want to go easily

B. it contributes to their happiness and health

C. it makes them work and live independently

D. it functions as a cure for their mental illnesses

64. What can we infer from what Dr Thomas Blood said?

A. Researchers are trying new technology to improve driving skills of older people.

B. Older drivers usually drive slowly and are seldom fined because of overspeeding.

C. Older drivers driving the new type of car will never cause traffic accidents.

D. New technology can effectively control the older drivers’ traffic offences.

65. What is the best title for the passage?

A. A new Model Electric Car

B. A Solution to Traffic Problems

C. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road

D. Driving Service for elderly people

D

Since my childhood, my parents has always impressed upon me the importance of education. Education is quite a must. It will help me get admitted into universities if I perform well academically and advance my opportunities for success in the future. Most jobs now require at least a high school diploma, and for many jobs, a college degree is preferred. It is important that all students have excellent educators in their life to help them achieve and have the opportunity to go to college, get a job, support themselves and their family, and influence the community.

As we celebrate and honor all teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, I’ve reflected on the influence my teachers have had, and will continue to have, in my life. From Mr. Davis, who challenged me in math, to Mr. James, my health teacher who taught me the value of hard work, my teachers have helped shape the student I am today. But one of the teachers who left a lasting impression on me was my summer school teacher, Mr. Kevin, who impacted me beyond the classroom. He found time to connect with me on a personal level and talk to me after class. I felt like Mr. Kevin cared about my academic success and was committed to setting an example of what’s possible.

Mr. Kevin could relate to what it was like to be a rising ninth-grade black male in today’s society. He taught me how to speak up confidently and share my ideas with others. He told me that I was brilliant and that when I spoke, the world should listen. And when I would put my hand down because I was unsure of my answer, Mr. Kevin would immediately say, “No valor, no glory.” He never made me feel inappropriate; he encouraged me to always run after knowledge because he, too, was learning every day. Mr. Kevin helped me face and survive the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities.

I think having more black male teachers like Mr. Kevin in the classroom could increase students’ success. They would share the background and experiences of many

of their students and help build long-lastingteacher and student relationships. But, unfortunately, the possibility that students of color in Nevada will have a teacher that looks like them is one of the lowest in the country.

As the student population becomes more racially various, teachers in Nevada still are mainly white. According to a 2016 Education Week report, in the Clark County School District, nearly 70 percent of students identified as students of color, but 76 percent of teachers were white. The numbers for black male teachers are more discouraging. Just 2 percent of teachers nationwide are black men.

But you can help change the numbers. Whether you decide to study education in college or graduate from school, or apply to programs in Las Vegas such as Teach For America, I hope more black males will consider teaching as a career.

My peers and I need more examples of excellence and success in classrooms—examples who look like us. You can be the model to impact our life and push us to achieve. You can ensure that, when we look to the front of the room, we can see a little bit of ourselves reflected back.

Are you often upset about your failure in daily life? In fact everyone has gone through failure. In most cases you fail because of a lack of persistence(坚持不懈). Being persistent is a skill that can help you reach a dream more easily, get what you desire and even be a way in which you defend your idea or right before difficult people. Being persistent is a kind of quality most people who are successful have.

Failure is often used as an excuse or reason not to go after a goal. Yet, getting over failure is a good way of being persistent. So to be persistent, you should accept the failure that has happened. The most successful people in life have ever failed. The difference between them and people who fail is that successful people face the failure, learn from it and use it fully and wisely to inspire their next attempt.

You should keep on trying at the first sight of difficulty. Anything that is worth doing or achieving is sure to be difficulty. Treat that as the challenge and as something that will test your courage, shape you for the better, and make you stronger and wiser. If at first you do not succeed, try it again and again.

More importantly, you need to learn to give up where necessary. If the constant facts tell you that you should let go of an realistic goal despite your efforts, be wise about devoting your energies. Don’t waste time and energy, for you have just learned what does not work and is not worth persisting with.

In addition, it is also important to be persistent when refusing or demanding

something. So you have to be persistent in what you say so that other people truly understand your meaning and know that you mean it. Whether or not you succeed in getting the reply you are seeking does not matter; it is how you handle it that will be remembered by others. Thus, when making your request or refusal, make eye contact with the person you are talking with, and this shows you are serious. Avoid saying sorry unless it is necessary because an apology usually is a sign of guilt, uncertainty
