At 65, most people are thinking about getting a senior citizen bus pass. But for Montana woman

Ethel MacDonald, who’s now a great-grandmother, that’s when she took up tour cycling.

“I like what I like to do without having to wait for someone else to be ready,” explains the 78- year-old-great-grandmother. The appeal of biking alone on the open road, she says, is “just feeling like I’m my own boss.”

She began tour cycling in 2003, beginning with France’s Atlantic coast. Aside from trips round her native United States, she’s wheeled her way through the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia

and beyond.

Her companion on her Ireland trip is a pink Brompton folding bike, which she’s used on five trips around the US south. She keeps another bike with a friend for her tours of mainland Europe. This seasoned biker reckons (估算) she’s traveled at least 100, 000 miles. “Usually my trips are close to

1,000 miles in three to four weeks.” MacDonald says.

She uses online travel communities Warm Showers and Couchsurfing to find a place to stay, and hosts guests herself at her home in Missoula, Montana. Warm Showers is exclusively( 专门地 ) for touring cyclists while Couchsurfing is for any travelers wanting to meet new people or open their homes to others. By August 2016, MacDonald estimated that she’d stayed with 165 hosts and hosted around 200 guests of her own. “It saves a pile of money,” she admits. “But far beyond that, the real value is the people you meet, the inspiration you get from each other, the memories, the connections.”

She keeps a scrapbook(剪贴簿 ) filled with photos and notes from all the people she’s met at home and abroad, and keeps in touch with her friends worldwide through Facebook and email. When traveling, she particularly loves the “b ig cultural exchange”that comes with spending each night with a new host with a different perspective on the world.

For anyone who wants to follow in her footsteps, her advice is simple, “Just do it.”

Last year, I called emergency services because I found my partner unconscious on the floor. Within minutes, a police car and ambulance arrived, filled with police, doctors and nurses who moved my partner away to the emergency department, where he received the critical care that he needed.

A week later, still marveling at the impact of a handful of strangers, I wrote thank-you notes to those helpful police and doctors and nurses and baked for them. It was a small gesture with a big impact. When I dropped off cakes at the police and fire stations, they thanked me for the gifts. I drove away feeling light and happy, partly because I’d done a good deed, but mostly because I was amazed that there are selfless people who do life-saving work and expect nothing in return. Research has shown that sharing thoughts of gratitude and performing acts of kindness can boost your mood and have other positive effects on your health.

When you feel thankful for things you’ve received or something that’s happened, that’s gratitude. It’s impossible to feel it in a vacuum; others are always responsible, whether they’re loved ones, strangers or a higher power. “Gratitude is how you relate to others, when you see yourself in connection with things larger than yourself,” Ruch says.

Today, many people don’t stop to appreciate what they have, much less express gratitude. Our instant-gratification lifestyle may be to blame.

“With commercial and social media, everything is speeding the younger generation to make them feel that they are the centre of the universe,” s ays Tamiko Zablith, founder of the London-based etiquette consulting firm Minding Manners. “If it’s all about them, why thank others?”

Why not thank others? Studies have shown that people who express gratitude increase their happiness levels, lower their blood pressure levels, get better quality sleep, improve their relationships, have a positive impact on their depression levels and are less affected by pain.

Because gratitude is a fairly new field of study, researchers are still trying to identify its cause- and-effect relationship with various health benefits.

31. Which could be the best title of this text?

Things You Should Stop Doing to Be

Successful

Are you a happy person? How often do you think of reasons why everyone around you is successful though they are not better than you in general? Here are some things you should stop doing to be successful.

1.36

Different people may interpret “success” in different ways: some of them measure it in money,

regular format for many years. In the book, a young boy takes the readers on an exciting journey of his father's adventures inside an Ecuadorian jungle. other ones —in positive changes to people around them and the world in general. 37 worry about what other people think but come after what

makes you happy.

2. Do not believe anything without questioning it.

Don’t

The book that is made from acid-free paper, printed with natural ink and hand-stitch(手工缝合),

is completely recyclable. Jacaranda( 蓝花楹) seeds are carefully sewn into

the pages to help it transform into a tree.

After a kid finishes reading the book (over and over again), he or she waters the cover and places it in a sunny area inside the house. Once the seeds sprout (发芽), the book can be planted in the dirt in any location the owner decides. From then on, the book just has to be nurtured (培育) like any other plant. Franco says they picked the Jacaranda, because “It's a tree that provides excellent shade and offers oxygen to the environment.”

The only unfortunate part is that the publishers are not planning to transform their other books or even make more copies of this “tree boo k”. This non-commercial project was just a one-time project to make everyone aware of the resources used when producing something even as common as a book. 32. What can we know from the first

paragraph? A. Reading e-books is an

excellent habit.

B. Printed books should be thrown away.

C. Printed books have consumed too many trees.

D. Young kids have a special preference for e-books.

33. What is special about the book Mi Pap Estuvo

en la Selva? A. It can be read again and again.

B. It can be easily stored for future use.

C. It can be transformed into a tree if planted.

38 They are critical thinkers, and they understand that we all are ruled by our prejudices, so they will always question new information.

3. Do not worry about all unpredictable things that may happen to you.

If you want to be successful, stop thinking about everything that may happen to you. 39 Be ready to improve and change your deeds and decisions when things suddenly don’t go according to your plan.

4. Do not care about what other people think of you.

40 Your attempts to become “g ood”for everyone will turn into nothing but new worries, stresses, and problems. Successful people do not concentrate on the quantity of people to please, but worry about their quality and focus on developing friendships with people they really care about.

A.Do not wait for the “right time” to do

anything. B.Do not let others decide what

“succe ss” is for you.

C.Successful people do not just accept any new information to be true.

D.As far as we all know, it’s impossible to please all the people who surround us. E.Try to feel comfortable with the reality and accept the fact your future

can’t be predicted. F.If you want to be successful, do not let others

force their interpretation of success on you.

G.Successful people never ignore or avoid problems, no matter how big and awful they seem.

Now I’d like to share with you a strange experience I had a month before. It may sound funny, and it’s true. After a day’s hard work, I went to bed early than usual. It was about two o’clock in the morning, and suddenly I woke up. I heard a noise. I got out of bed and went slow downstairs. I listened carefully. I could heard two men speaking quietly. I believed two thieves had broken into my house and

I was really frightened, so I went back to upstairs, and immediately phone the police from my bedroom. The police arrived quickly. They opened front door with a special key and went into the living room. You can imagine what embarrassed I was when they came upstairs and told me we had turned the television off for me and everything was all right.

I really want to accept it and take this opportunity to introduce the traditional Chinese painting to foreign friends, but I’m sorry to tell you that I couldn’t. The reason is that I am occupied in preparing myself for the coming examination.

I strongly recommend my friend Wang Wei, who is the most suitable person to take my place next week. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for. Larry first began diving when he was his daughter's age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were not even allowed to dive. After the first expedition, Larry's later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures. Larry's first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free.
