UNIT10

May I Do That?

Asking/Giving Permission and Offering Help

Introduction

Requesting is different from asking for permission, though they sometimes use the same set of opening gambits.Requesting aims to get people to do things for you, positively, whereas the goal of asking permission is to ask others to allow you to do something. Here are two typical examples in point:1)I wonder if you could lend me your dictionary?2)I wonder if I could possibly use your phone? They look the same, but are different indeed.

In this unit,we’ll concentrate on asking for and giving permission. At the same time, you’ll also learn how to offer help and give reasons or excuses. When something has to be done, you may ask another to do it or simply do it yourself without saying anything. But when someone else is doing something, you might offer to help because you enjoy being kind and like to assist others when they need help.Such offers may often be turned down, though. After you’ve made a request or asked for permission, you may need to add a brief reason, and an excuse is usually necessary when you don’t agree to the request or refuse to give permission.

Answers:

1.Requesting aims to get people to do things for you while asking for permission means

making sure another will allow you to do something.

2.When someone else is doing something,we might offer to help because we want to be kind

and assist them.

3.We give excuses when we turn down a request or refuse to give permission.

Background Information:

Some Points for“Offering to Help”:

a)“Can I help you?”is a more general offer of help,whereas“May I help you?”is usually

used by people who work in stores, offices, schools or other types of service jobs.

b)When you decline an offer,don’t be too abrupt.You may,along with thanks,say“I’m all

right.”“I’ve got it.”“Don’t bother,I’ll do it myself.”etc.

c)People sometimes turn down help just because they don’t like to bother or inconvenience

the helper. You may offer help twice to show your sincerity. If the offer is turned down again,it really means that your help is not needed.

Part Four Comprehensive Practice

Section A

I heard a story about a movie director who was making a movie a few years ago.And this guy had a problem with English pronunciation. He would speak but often people couldn’t understand what he was saying. He was almost incomprehensible.

Well, the movie company had spent lots and lots of money to make this movie. And the sets were very expensive, costing hundreds and hundreds of dollars. And there was this one scene in the movie that the assistant director had decided to film in almost total darkness for a special effect. And then the first,uh...movie director said,“No,no,that’s terrible.I don’t like that at all.”

And the assistant director said,“But it’s artistic, you know. It’s very nice.”

And finally the director shouted the man down and he said,“Eliminate it!Just eliminate it!”

Well, the sets were very elaborate, you know, and what can you do?Well, the next morning the director went to the movie studio and he looked around and he didn’t see the set at all.And it was such an expensive set.He couldn’t figure it out.So he went and found the assistant director and he said,“Where is that set?It was a very expensive set.”

And the assistant director said,“Well, you told me to eliminate it.”

And the director said,“No,you idiot.I didn’t say,‘Eliminate it,’I said,‘Illuminate it!’”

Answers to the Questions:

1.had a problem with his English pronunciation;almost incomprehensible.

Section B

Dr.Sloper:You must allow me to say,Mr.Townsend, that it would have been becoming of you to give me your intentions before they had gone so far.

Morris:I should have done so,Doctor,if you had not let your daughter so much liberty. She seems to me quite her own mistress.

Dr.Sloper:She is.But she is not,I trust, quite so emancipated as to choose a husband without consulting me.The truth is,your little affair has come to a head faster

than I expected. It was only the other day Catherine made your acquaintance. Morris:We have not been slow to arrive at an understanding. My interest in Miss Sloper began the first time I saw her.

Dr.Sloper:Did it not even precede your first meeting?

Morris:I certainly had already heard that she was a charming girl.

Dr.Sloper:A charming girl—that’s what you think of her?

Morris:(smiling)Otherwise I should not be sitting here.

Dr.Sloper:My dear young man,you must be very susceptible.As Catherine’s mother,I have,

I hope,a just appreciation of her many good qualities. But I don’t mind telling

you that I’ve never quite thought of her in that light.

Morris:I don’t know what I might think of her if I were her father.I can’t put myself in that place.I speak from my own point of view.

Dr.Sloper:You speak very well...but did you really expect that I would throw my daughter into your arms?

Morris:No,I had an idea you didn’t like me.

Dr.Sloper:What gave you that idea?

Morris:The fact that I’m poor.

Dr.Sloper:That has a harsh sound, but it’s about the truth. You have no means, profession, visible resources or prospects, and so you’re in a category from which not to

choose a son-in-law.Particularly not for my daughter, who is a weak young

woman with a large fortune.

Morris:Ah,yes!You mean that I am a mercenary.I only want your daughter’s money!

Dr.Sloper:No,I don’t say that—You say that!I say simply you are in the wrong category. Morris:But your daughter doesn’t marry a category! She marries a man—a man whom she is

good enough to say she loves!

Dr.Sloper:A man who offers nothing in return.

Notes:

1.Emancipated means liberal,free.

2.Susceptible here means likely to experience strong feelings, esp.to fall in love easily.e.g.a

susceptible girl.It can also mean a)easily influenced.e.g.susceptible to suggestions;b) sensitive, likely to feel a strong effect(from).e.g.susceptible to ill health/susceptible to the cold.

3.Mercenary means a soldier who fights for the country that pays him,not for his own

country. Here refers to a person influenced by the wish to gain money or other rewards, not by love.

LECTURE AUDIOSCRIPTS UNIT 1 What’s in a Name? TEACHER: Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Felipe, Monica, Theo, and I can't remember your name. STUDENT 1: Patricia. TEACHER: Patricia, right, Patricia. Those are all beautiful names, and that's our topic today-names. Names are a culture universal. This means everyone uses names. A person's name can tell us a bit about a person's family. Today, we’ll begin by looking at first names and how people choose names for their children. And then we'll talk about family names, and look at the different categories of family names. Although the scope of the lecture today is English-language names, we can use the same approach, you know, to look at names from any culture. Let's take a brief look at first, or given names. There are several ways parents choose the first name for their child. The first way is by family history. Parents may choose a name because it is passed from generation to generation; for example, the first born son might be named after his father or grandfather. Although family names are also passed to daughters, it is usually as a middle name. Adding "junior" or "the second" for example, William Parker the se conds only done with boys', not with girls’names. The second way parents choose a name is after a family member or friend who has died recently, or after someone "they admire, like a well-known leader or a famous musician. Although most English first names mean something, for example, "Richard" means powerful and “Ann" means grace, nowadays meaning is not the main reason people select their baby's name. The third way is to provide a "push" for the child. Parents want to choose a name that sounds very "successful." A strong name might help them in the business world, for example. Or they might choose a name that works for either gender, like Taylor or Terry. So, given these three methods, what is the

One benefit is that genetically modified plants may needfewer pesticides than normal plants. For example, thereis a type of corn that is bad for insects--when the insectseat the corn plant, they die. However, the corn doesn'thurt people. This type of corn is beneficial because farmers use fewer pesticides to grow the corn, and so there isless pollution in the environment. Also the corn is lessexpensive because the farmers don't have to spend a lot ofmoney on pesticides. So, by using fewer pesticides, the corn is cheaper and the environment is cleaner. Another benefit of genetically modified plants is that theymay grow better than normal plants. One example is a type of genetically modified strawberry that can grow incold weather. These are better than normal strawberriesbecause farmers can plantthe strawberries earlier in thespring and later in the fall, when normal strawberries usually die. So, as a result,
