The definitions of VDA 2005 and VDA 2006 apply to this Standard.
4 Principles
It was not possible to adopt parameters and measuring conditions of international standards in the field of surface measurement technology unchanged. For automotive engineering, it was therefore felt necessary to agree uniform modified specifications. The advanced and future-oriented approaches followed by the new international standards have thus been integrated. Table 1 shows how these modified specifications have been defined for the automotive engineering sector.
VDA 2005 supersedes International Standard ISO 1302 with regard to indications of the surface texture in CAD drawings.
VDA 2006 covers the modified specifications with regard to International Standards ISO 3274, ISO 4287 and ISO 4288. These International Standards are not valid in isolation and shall only be used in combina-tion with VDA 2006.
In addition, new evaluation and filtering methods have been defined. These describe the evaluation of periodic profiles and robust filtering for stratified surfaces. These methods are described in VDA Recom-mendations VDA 2007 and VDA 2008.

5 Surface Texture Parameters
Table 3 of Section 5 indicates important parameters and their codes including a brief explanation and se-
lection recommendation for technical product documentation. Any parameters not listed in Table 3 are
only permissible for auxiliary and special functions.
Parameter " Rz " is the default surface texture parameter.
Recommendation:
For surfaces subject to high stress, the Rk parameters in accordance with ISO 13565-2 shall be used.
Re VDA-2006:
Surface parameters are described in VDA 2006 based on the standards ISO 4287 and ISO 4288. VDA
2006 corrects the measuring and evaluation conditions which are not compatible with standard measuring
procedures.
