In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day.

However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their

employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of

their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would

feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in

their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day

employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money,

which would increase company profits.

For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.

Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees.

Employees

who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the

quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private

interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

- Main point: A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal

pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take

the option.

- Sub point 1: The shortened workweek would increase company profits. - Sub point 2: the country as a whole will benefits.

- Sub point 3: the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees.

Offering employees the option of a four-day workweek won’t affect the

company profits, economic conditions or the lives of employees in the ways the reading suggests.

First, offering a four-day workweek will probably force companies to spend more, possibly a lot more. Adding new workers means putting much more money into

providing training and medical benefits. Remember the costs of things like health benefits can be the same whether an employee works four days or five. And having more employees also requires more office space and more computers. These

additional costs would quickly cut into company profits.

Second, with respect to overall employment, it doesn’t follow that once some employees choose a four-day workweek, many more jobs will become available.

Hiring new workers is costly, as I argued a moment ago. And companies have other options. They might just choose to ask their employees to work overtime to make up the difference. Worse, companies might raise expectations. They might start to expect that their four-day employees can do the same amount of work they used

to do in five days. If this happens, then no additional jobs will be created and current

jobs will become more unpleasant.

Finally, while a four-day workweek offers employees more free time to invest in their

personal lives, it also presents some risks that could end up reducing their quality of

life. Working a shorter week can decrease employees’ job stability and harm their chances for advancing their careers.

Four-day employees are likely to be the first to lose their jobs during an economic downturn. They may also be passed over for promotions because companies

might prefer to have five-day employees in management positions to ensure

continuous coverage and consistent supervision for the entire workweek.

同意: say, argue, claim, opinion, hold the view that, figure, deem, believe, reckon,

consider, opinion, proposition,

反对:on contrary, by contrast, argue against, refute, object, hold a totally different

view, oppose, be against.

The passage argues that four-day work week will benefit companies, the whole economy, and individuals. But in the lecture, the professor holds a totally different view that no one will be beneficial from the new work week.

Firstly, the passage says that companies will get more profits for employees can work more effectively. However, the lecture points out that four-day workweek will lead to spend more. That is because companies have to spend more money on

training, medical benefits, office positions, even new computers.

Secondly, the passage claims that the whole economy will benefit, for the four-day workweek is a way to reduce unemployment rates. The lecture refutes the idea

completely. Admittedly, there are more available jobs, but companies will prefer to

let employees work overtime to finish them for hiring new staff is too expensive. In

addition, the companies may lift their expectation that staff finish five-day jobs within

four-day.

Thirdly, the passage suggests that individual employees can benefit from it. Though the four-day workweek can provide more leisure time to employees, the lecture argues against the passage. Comparing to five-day workers, the four-day workweek employees may be the first one to be fire during economic depression. And they will have less chance to promotion because companies wish that managers could be on duty every work day.

In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a

group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages.

First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and skills

than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people

involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in

response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to

problems and issues.

Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky

decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads

responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be

held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.

Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team.

Team members

who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by the decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to

“shine”, to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized

as highly significant, because a team’s overall results can be more far-reaching and

have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.

- Main point: perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to

assemble a group

of people into a team.

- Sub point 1: A group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it

- Sub point 2: Sometimes these creative solutions come about.

- Sub point 3: Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the

team.

- Main point:

main point。

perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a

team。

到开头段,因为开头段存在的目的是:what I will talk about。

因此“because of

the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they

紧接着的这句就更和谐了,“This is because”

我们不能 because A,B 就误认为 B 是 point。

Now I want to tell you about what one company found when it decided that it would turn over

some of its new projects to teams of people, and make the team responsible for planning the

projects and getting the work done. After about six months, the company took a look at how well the teams performed.

On virtually every team, some members got almost a “free ride” . . . they didn’t contribute much at all, but if their team did a good job, they nevertheless benefited from the recognition the team got.

And what about group members who worked especially well and who provided a lot

of insight on problems and issues? Well . . . the recognition for a job well done went

to the group as a whole, no names were named. So it won’t surprise you to learn that when the real contributors were asked how they felt about the group process, their attitude was just the opposite of what the reading predicts.

Another finding was that some projects just didn’t move very quickly. Why? Because

it took so long to reach consensus; it took many, many meetings to build the

agreement among group

members about how they would move the project along.

On the other hand, there were other instances where one or two people managed to

become very influential over what their group did. Sometimes when those

influencers said “That will never work” about an idea t he group was developing, the

idea was quickly dropped instead of being further discussed. And then there was

another occasion when a couple influencers convinced the group that a plan of theirs

was “highly creative.” And even though some members trie d to

warn the rest of the group that the project was moving in directions that might not

work, they were basically ignored by other group members. Can you guess the

ending to this story? When the

project failed, the blame was placed on all the members of the group.

Another, on the other hand, because, and then there was another occasion

- didn’t contribute, benefit, no names were named, opposite of reading

prediction

- didn’t move very quickly, long to consensus, many meetings

- influential, never work - dropped, high creative - warn, direction not work - ignore, fail,

blame on all members.

The lecturer talks about research conducted by a firm that used the group system to

handle their work. He says that the theory stated in the passage was very different

and somewhat inaccurate when compared to what happened in reality.

First, some members got free ri des. That is, some didn’t work hard but got

recognition for the success nontheless. This also indicates that people who worked

hard were not given recognition they should have gotten. In other words, they

weren’t given the opportunity to “shine”. Thi s directly contradicts what the passage

indicates.

Second, groups were slow in progress. The passage says that groups are more

responsive than individuals because of the number of people involved and their

aggregated resources. However, the speaker talks about how the firm found out that

groups were slower than individuals in decision making. Groups needed more time

for meetings, which are necessary procedures in decision making. This was another

place where experience contradicted theory.

Third, influential people might emerge and lead the group towards glory or failure. If

the influent

people are going in the right direction there would be no problem. But in cases

where they go in

the wrong direction, there is nobody that has enough influence to counter the

decision made. In

other words, the group might turn into a dictatorship, with the influential party as

the leader, and

might become less flexible in its thinking. They might become one-sided, and thus

fail to succeed.

rating annotation:

Once you can read past what seem to be the results of poor typing, this Benchmark

5 does an excellent job of presenting the points about the contribution and

recognition of group members as well as about speed of group decisions. The

final paragraph contains one noticeable error (“influent”), which is then used

correctly two sentences later (“influential”). Overall, this is a successful response

and scored within (though perhaps not at the top of) the 5 level

(Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn 1606

Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are

doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by

him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and

indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.

First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is

wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is

wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was

known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been

guilty of such an inconsistency.

Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting

these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light

reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would

absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-

which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.

Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel

made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted

on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together

in this way from several pieces of wood.

For these reason the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt’s

paintings in the 1930s.

- Main point: The painting is not a work by Rembrandt.

- Sub point 1: There is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the

portrait is

dressed.

- Sub point 2: Light and shadow do not fit together.

- Sub point 3: Panel made of several pieces of wood glued together which is never done

by Rembrandt.

TEST1 Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of another animal or group of animals. Altruism is the opposite of selfishness; individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves. Examples of altruism abound, both among humans and among other mammals. Unselfish acts among humans range from the sharing of food with strangers to the donation of body organs to family members, and even to strangers. Such acts are altruistic in that they benefit another, yet provide little reward to the one performing the act. In fact, many species of animals appear willing to sacrifice food, or even their life, to assist other members of their group. The meerkat, which is a mammal that dwells in burrows in grassland areas of Africa, is often cited as an example. In groups of meerkats, an individual acts as a sentinel, standing guard and looking out for predators while the others hunt for food or eat food they have obtained. If the sentinel meerkat sees a predator such as a hawk approaching the group, it gives an alarm cry alerting the other meerkats to run and seek shelter. By standing guard, the sentinel meerkat gains nothing—it goes without food while the others eat, and it places itself in grave danger. After it issues an alarm, it has to flee alone, which might make it more at risk to a predator, since animals in groups are often able to work together to fend off a predator. So the altruistic sentinel behavior helps ensure the survival of other members of the meerkat’s group. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage. TEST2 Professors are normally found in university classrooms, offices, and libraries doing research and lecturing to their students. More and more, however, they also appear as guests on television news programs, giving expert commentary on the latest events in the world. These television appearances are of great benefit to the professors themselves as well as to their universities and the general public. Professors benefit from appearing on television because by doing so they acquire reputations as authorities in their academic fields among a much wider audience than they have on campus. If a professor publishes views in an academic journal, only other scholars will learn about and appreciate those views. But when a professor appears on TV, thousands of people outside the narrow academic community become aware of the professor’s ideas. So when profes sors share their ideas with a television audience, the professors’ importance as scholars is enhanced. Universities also benefit from such appearances. The universities receive positive publicity

独立写作: 三选一,你愿意作出下列那种改变improve your health Out of the following three things, which one would you prefer to regulate in order to improve your health? 1. The kind of food you eat 2. The amount of exercise 3. The amount of stress in your life Modern society has turned humans into curious creatures. Our ancestors were highly active thanks to their hunter-gatherer lifestyle; they ate fairly balanced diets due to the limited availability of fats and simple carbohydrates; and they relied on stress as a survival mechanism that kept them alert during intermittent periods of danger. Now, many of us spend upwards of 8 hours a day sedentary at our jobs; we eat unbalance diets of pre-prepared foods in order to save time; and we are constantly stressed due to a never-ending bombardment of stressors coming from our contemporary lifestyle. Managing all three things--diet, exercise, and stress--would be a daunting task for anyone, so if I had to pick one thing to improve my health, it would probably be exercise.

The reading passage explains the negative effects of introducing foreign species into a local ecosystem. The lecture, on the other hand, offers counterarguments to prove that introduced species many not necessarily be harmful. First, according to the reading, imported species may destroy the existing balance within an ecosystem. However, the lecturer argues that these species don’t always do harm to the local ecosystem. Instead they may bring benefits to local agriculture. Second, the reading states that imported species may destroy the useful aspects of local species. Yet the lecturer points out that this is not always the case. He points out that it depends on local circumstances. For example, the cane toads introduced into the state of Florida have helped to exterminate pests that have infested local harvest. Finally, the reading contends that imported species may add to the local economic burden. Again, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that the impact on local economy varies from place to place. He/She uses the example of mesquite to illustrate this point. This plant imported into Africa has been used as food and firewood by the local people, a useful contribution to the local economy. 080427CNW1 The reading passage provides three pieces of evidence to support author Gavin Menzies’s claim that it was Chinese who first visited the Americas. However, the lecturer dismisses this claim as unfounded. First, as to the markings resembling Chinese characters discovered on a rock on Bimini Road, the lecturer argues that these markings are natural formation rather than human engraving. It looks as if they were carved by humans but a closer examination by geologists would immediately reveal that they are formed by natural forces. Second, regarding the donut-like anchor found off the Coast of Bimini, which seems to be made by Chinese, the speaker suggests that this does not necessarily mean Chinese had been there first, because similar anchors had long been used in navigation by many other countries. Finally, the lecture refuses to view the stone towers on Bimini Island as evidence of the arrival of Chinese sailors earlier than others. He points out that although these towers look like a Chinese lighthouse from a distance, they are in fact built in an English architectural style. Furthermore, carbon dating technique has indicated that the construction by Chinese sailors took place much later than the 15th century.

Integrated Writing Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass windows. There are, however, several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds. One-Way Glass One solution is to replace the regular, clear glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction. The occupants of the building can see out, but birds and others cannot see in. If birds cannot see through a window, they will understand that the glass forms a solid barrier and will not try to fly through it. Colorful Designs A second solution is to paint colorful lines or other designs on regular window glass. For example, a window could have a design of thin stripes painted over the glass. People would still be able to see through the openings in the design where there is no paint, while birds would see the stripes and thus avoid trying to fly through the glass. Architects can be encouraged to include colorful painted patterns on glass as part of the general design of buildings.

(1) Which one do you prefer, to solve problems on your own experience and knowledge, or to ask others for advice? As knowledge and experience serve as twim towers in problem-solving, one is often presented with two major paths that pave the way for final fulfillment, eitther to wrack his brain, just like what happened to Neuton, siiting for many years under an apple tree and eventually figuring out ond of the greatest universal rules that govern the whole globe, or to seek for others’ widsom through their advice, just as in the case of Benjinin Franklin, gathering great minds under one roof and then establishing a most world-renown libray. Both ways work. When a practical goal is involved, however, Benjimin Franklin may best be regareded as a role model in this respect and asking people for advice often turn out to be the prime alternative. Experience and knowledge borrowed or learned from others’ advice contribute greatly to effectiveness and effeciency for a goal-accomplishment. Not all experience and knowledge related to problem-solving can be obtained by personal effort alone due to limitations of mind and capabilities of each individual. A single thought in someone’s mind is, more often than not, far less shining compared with group’s wisdom. That explains the famous old saying that one sees further when standing upon the shoulders’ of past great giants; that explains why a great leader is always with greater minds; that also explains why teamwork in corperation is highly emphasized in the 21st century. Brainstorm and exchange of ideas between different thoughts never fail to enhance capabilities of each individula involved, a team, a company, an institution, a country, or even the entire global village. Asking others’ advice instead of getting everything done on one’s own promotes democracy and communication too. In terms of democracy, it is necessary to give others rights and chances to speak since the problem may concern them in different ways, and their saying in turn reflects our respect toward freedom of speech as well as their wisdom. In terms of communication, idea exchange sometimes focuses more than solutions, and hereby better mutual understanding about perspectives, principles, praticalities and personalities of each other. Admittely turning to others for help and suggestion by no means refers to absolute and irresponsible dependence. Consideration upon different thoughts and ideas broadens our mind, enlarges our vision, furthers understanding, enhances more effective and efficient brainstorm, and stresses mutual respect in groups and communities, which undoubtedly gives rise to better, if not the best solutions. As is paraphrased from John F Kenedy, brainstormed, there is little we cannot do while divided, there is little we can do. (2) Case of Benjinin Franklin, gathering great minds under one roof and then establishing a most world-renown libray.

TPO26 Inthe listening material, the professor made several points about the invasion ofthe zebra mussels can be stopped. Firstof all, the reading passage states that the human transportation will cause theinvasion of the zabra mussels, while the professor contradicts that people cannotcontrol it in the past because of the lack of the knowledge. On the other hand, the ocean water will be taken by the ship to replace the freshwater, which maykill the mussels. Moreover, the reading passage also mentions that if the mussels are taken to the newplace, they wont have predators, while the professor refutes that they candominate it just for a short

The reading passage explores the topic of the “Let it burn” policy. The professor’s lecture deals with the same issue. However, she thinks that the “Let it burn”policy is fundamental positive policy, which contradicts what the reading states. And in the lecture, she uses three specific points to support her idea. First, the professor argues in the lecture that the fire enhanced the diversity of vegetation in Yellowstone Park, even though the reading passage suggests that Yellowstone fires caused tremendous damage to the park's trees and other vegetation. This is because that the fire has created a opportunity for some new plants to grow, for instance, the small plants which needed open un-shaded area and the seeds which demanded high levels of heat to germinate, which means that the small vegetations would had a better environment after the large trees had been destroyed. Obviously, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading. Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that the park wildlife was affected, and there was also concern that the destruction of habitats and food chains, the professor states that the fire also created new opportunities for some animals’ thriving that the population could recover and strengthened certain food chains. Then he supports this point with the fact that, for example, the new plants offered perfect habitats for some animals like rabbits and hares, and promote their predators’ booming the
