I'm writing this reference letter to strongly recommend Wu Miao for your PhD program. I've been his supervisor for 2 years in Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University from the year 2004-2006. I was deeply impressed with him not only the good score "5" he got in the class but also the highly active attitude and excellent study ability when he worked on my project. I've never hesitated to recommend him for promotion when his time ceme.

Mr. Wu was a good assistant who has big interest on computer science. We finished the two projects during the two years study in our lab. One was named Optical Character Reorganization on Vehicle License Plate Recognition and the other was named “Oil Data Analysis System”. The former one is about the image process and neural network. And the latter one is about the database and data mining. During the time he studied in my lab, Mr. Wu demonstrated the ability to work independently with great creativity and enthusiasm. We outlined a scope of work to be completed, and he successfully completed that work ahead. He put in extra hours as necessary in order to meet specific deadlines that I set. He worked as hard as one of my best graduate students. He was usually the first one in the lab in the morning and the last one to leave in the evening.

The other student working with Mr. Wu commented favorably about working with Mr. Wu. He said the Mr. Wu got along well with everyone and had the ability to compromise with other team members.

I was especially taken by Mr. Wu’s creative mind and independent work ethic. He continued to read the scientific journals independently. We met almost every week; One day he presented papers and information that was an advanced algorithm to me. By the end of the semester he introduced me to scientific papers that were directly relevant to his study that I hadn’t seen before.

Mr. Wu also showed remarkable problem solving ability. Our computer system began having problems midway through his experiment. Mr. Wu spent a full weekend troubleshooting the system. He discovered there are some mistakes in the program that we developed and corrected them.

Mr. Wu was going to be first author on a manuscript that he is preparing for publication. He followed through on his promise to write the manuscript during his M2 year. Moreover, he handled the manuscript revisions and saw the manuscript through to publication. This illustrates is high level of motivation.

I believe Mr. Wu is totally qualified in the study and research of your PhD program, so I strongly recommend him to your program. Your favorable consideration of his admission will be highly appreciated.
