Nowadays, one of the most popular phenomena in China is to study abroad. According to a research in New York Times, the number of Chinese undergraduates only in the United States has tripled in just three years, to 40,000, making them the largest group of foreign students at American colleges. Universities like Delaware, where the number of Chinese students has leapt from 8 in 2007 to 517 this year. While it’s difficult to quantity the effects studying abroad on students, it is a wise choice because it will provide a chance to learn knowledge under a different education system, exercise the independent living-ability and increase the worldwide cultural communication.

Studying abroad opens up a new education system that you might never encounter if you don’t cast your net. Students in China’s test-centric culture spend most of their high school years studying for the gao kao, the college entrance exam that is the sole determining factor for admission to colleges. When they have entered universities, many Chinese students choose to accept a different education. Zhizhou Zhu, a Chinese college student who is doing his master degree in Global Finance, Trade, and Economic now. After four years study in Anhui Normal University in China, he went to Denver for further study. The impressive experience on him is the big difference about schools. “In China, school is a kind of like the government. But in DU, we pay to study what we want to study and there is much more freedom, you’ll feel that you are the one who take the initiative in your career.” he said. Thus in the perspective of Zhizhou Zhu, he benefited a lot from studying abroad.

When studying abroad, it can be entirely new culture, location, climate, lifestyle for you. New life offers adventures and experiences; it can also give some tough challenges. Since childhood, students always stay with parents and lead a comfortable life; parents have prepared everything for them. Whenever and whatever they want, parents will do their best to satisfy them. However, because of the far distance, parents and friends can’t visit them often any more. So they have no choice but to rely on themselves. For example, my neighbor sister, who spent two years’ study in Finland, has very strong feeling towards this matter. “It is really hard being in a foreign country. Unfamiliar environment makes you feel lonely at the beginning. But it is really a chance to challenge yourself and exercise your personality.” she said. It’s obvious that studying abroad does positive effect on forming a good quality.

It is likely that you will experience a little culture shock as you acclimatize to a new way of doing things, but the experiences you gain will hold you in good stead for your ambition in the future. During the period on abroad, students from different countries communicate with each other. Through the communication, both of them realize the differences between cultures. If your partner is a local, you may immense yourself more fully in the local culture and language. In the meantime, your Chinese behaviors and manners may also have influence on him to some degree. Tangdi, a student who studies in Britain, makes up his mind to spread the “HanFu culture” (the ancient clothes in Han Dynasty). In order to popularize this culture, he organized many activities and called for foreign students to wear in HanFu walking past Britain Museum, Chinatown, and London Bridge. Through this way, Chinese traditional culture can be known by more people all over the world. Therefore, studying abroad plays an important role in increasing the worldwide

cultural communication.

It is often argued that language barrier is a stumbling block in studying abroad. Admittedly, many students face this problem, especially those in poor English level. Sometimes, they felt depressed when not understanding even what a ten-year-old child said. Nevertheless, the pure English environment provides a wonderful chance to improve oral English. To some extent, the frustration makes them practice English more actively. At the same time, more speaking means more communication; new friends will be made in the process. Also, the feeling of loneliness can be reduced and more passion and confidence will be put into study. Hence, language barrier should not be regarded as a disadvantage in studying aboard.

These reasons strongly support the belief that studying abroad is a wise choice in terms of education way, students themselves and culture communication. Without a doubt, it’s time for more Chinese to support studying abroad. In the near future, people will see the benefits that studying abroad brings.
