Many people today are obsessed with their appearance. Although they are perfectly healthy, they constantly worry that their nose is a bit too big, or that their ears stick too far out. Cosmetic surgery (整容)is a possible solution to this problem. Cosmetic surgery means a surgeon ___41___ a part of your body that works ___42___, but which makes you unhappy. It is different from plastic surgery, which ___43___ to the work surgeons do to repair body parts damaged by disease or accidents.
Different kinds of people get cosmetic surgery. Some may have low ___44___. They may be depressed, or struggling to find a satisfactory job. People with such problems believe cosmetic surgery will not just make them look better, but also make them feel better inside. Other people may be insecure about one part of their body, or just ___45___ with how they look.
There is no proof that cosmetic surgery can really make people happier, but ___46___ this, many people still have very high expectations for it. They think that i

t will solve all their problems. It is important to remember that cosmetic surgery might ___47___ a part of your body, but it can't change your whole life.
Cosmetic surgery can also be risky. If you have existing health problems, like a weak heart or breathing problems, this kind of operation can sometimes make them worse. In addition, cosmetic surgery is a big industry, and not everyone involved in it is honest. Therefore, you need to choose the clinic for your surgery very carefully. You must be certain that the surgeon you choose is ___48___ to give you cosmetic surgery.
The biggest question for someone thinking of having cosmetic surgery is the cost. The price can vary from a few hundred dollars to $10,000 or above. It depends on which part of your body you want to change. Rich stars may not __49___ the cost very high, but most people cannot afford to pay. Perhaps it is cheaper-and better for your health-to learn to live with how you look.
Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Some personal characteristics play an important role in the development of one's intelligence. But people fail to realize the importance of training these factors in young people.
The so-called 'non-intelligence factors' include one's feelings, will, motivation, interests and habits. After a 30-year study, American psychologists 50 that the main cause of differences in intelligence is not intelligence 51 , but non-intelligence factors including the desire to learn, will power and self-confidence.
52 people all know that one should have definite objectives, a strong will and good learning habits, quite a number of teachers and parents don't pay much attention to 53 these factors .
Some parents are greatly worried when their children fail to do well in their studies. They blame either genetic factors, or laziness, but they never take into 54 these non-intelligence factors. At the same time, some teachers don't inquire into reasons why students do 55 . They simply give them more courses and exercises, or 56 criticize or laugh at them. After all, these students lose self-confidence. Some of them just feel defeated and 57 themselves up as hopeless. Others may go astray(堕落)because they are sick of learning. An investigation of more than 1,000 middle school students in Shanghai showed that 46.5 per cent of them were 58 of learning, because of examinations, 36.4 per cent lacked persistence, initiative and consciousness and 10.3 per cent were sick of learning .
It is clear that the lack of cultivation of non-intelligence factors has been a main 59 to intelligence development in teenagers. It even causes an imbalance between physiological and 60 development among a few s

tudents .
If we don't start now to 61 the cultivation of non-intelligence factors , it will not only affect the development of the 62 of teenagers, but also affect the quality of a whole generation. Some experts have put forward 63 about how to cultivate students' non-intelligence factors. Parents and teachers should 64 understand teenage psychology . On this basis, they can help them to pursue the objectives of learning, exciting their interests and toughening their willpower.

Catherine Destivelle is a rock star. She loves rock, but she can't sing or play the guitar! She is a rock climber and a big star in France and Italy. She is the most famous woman climber in the world because she often climbs without ropes. She climbs in many countries but most often in the French Alps near Chamonix, where she lives. She started climbing near her home in Paris when she was five. Then, at fourteen, she joined the French Alpine Club to learn more, but immediately she climbed better and more quickly than the older members of the club. She won her first competition in Italy in 1995.
Three years ago she found a new route up the Dru Mountain near Chamonix. The climb took eleven days and for four days the snow was so heavy that she could not move. Last year other climbers tried to follow the new Destivelle Route, but they failed. They are going to try again this year.
People always ask her about her climbing. She says, "I climb because I'm in love with mountains. I like touching the rock and reading the face of the rock. I like it a lot. I felt at home on the side of a mountain. I prepare well before I go, so I'm never worried."
Catherine chooses new mountains from bo

Twenty years ago, most experts believed that differences in how boys and girls behaved were mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends. It's hard to cling to that belief today. Recent research has shown that there are biological differences between boys and girls. Understanding these differences is important in raising and educating children.
For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and the difference increases as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely (反过来), boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away too hear the teacher.
Likewise, girls are better in their expression of feelings. Studies reveal that negative emotions are seated in an area of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop all early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often cannot say much.
Dr. Sax, an advocate of single-sex education, points out that keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Therefore, parents and teachers should try to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.
72.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Boys tend to pay less attention in class than girls.
B. Girls are better than boys in

their ability to detect sounds.
C. Boys and girls behave differently because of biological differences.
D. Single-sex schools are not good because they keep boys and girls separate.
73.Why do girls express negative feelings better than boys?
A. Girls are more emotional than boys.
B. Girls have more brain cells than boys.
C. The amygdala is located in different areas of the brain for boys and girls.
D. The links between certain parts of the brain develop earlier in girls than in boys.
74.Which of the following does the author believe?
A. Girls need more training in communication.
B. Boys and girls should be educated in different ways.
C. Parents should pay more attention to boys.
D. Sex differences should be ignored in education。
75.What does the phase "cling to" in the first paragraph mean?

Transport is one of the aids to trade.By moving goods from places where they are plentiful to places where they are scarce, transport adds to their value. The more easily goods can be brought over the distance that separates producer and consumer, the better for trade. When there were no railways, no good roads, no canals, and only small sailing ships, trade was on a small scale.
77.
The great advances made in transport during the last two hundred years were accompanied by a big increase in trade.Bigger and faster ships enabled a trade in meat to develop between Britain and New Zealand, for instance.Quicker transport makes possible mass-production and big business, drawing supplies from, and selling goods to, all parts of the globe.Big factories could not exist without transport to carry the large number of workers they need to and from their homes.Big city stores could not have developed unless customers could travel easily from the suburbs and goods delivered to their homes.Big cities could not survive unless food could be brought from a distance.
78.
Transport also prevents waste.Much of the fish landed at the ports would be wasted if it could not be taken quickly to inland towns.Transport has given us a much greater variety of foods and goods since we no longer have to live on what is produced locally.Foods which at one time could be obtained only during a part of the year can now be obtained all through the year.Transport has raised the standard of living.
79.
By moving fuel, raw materials, and even power, for example, through electric cables, transport has led to the establishment of industries and trade in areas where they would have been impossible before.Districts and countries can concentrate on making things which they can do better and more che

aply than others and can then exchange them with one another. The cheaper and quicker transport becomes, the longer the distance over which goods can profitably be carried.Countries with poor transport have a lower standard of living.
80.
Commerce requires not only the moving of goods and people but also the carrying of messages and information.Means of communication, like telephones, cables and radio, send information about prices, supplies, and changing conditions in different parts of the world. In this way, advanced communication system also help to develop trade.
Section D
Directions: Read the following passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in fewest possible words.
As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.
 81. Why are people finding less time for relaxing themselves with the faster pace of life?
82. According to the writer, the most important character for a good manager
 is his ____________________________.
 83. How much stress can a person withstand?
 84. ______________________________ will happen when one is exposed to stress.

We are going to take the College Entrance Exams in less than one year. However, many students still don't know how to coordinate their study, rest and physical exercise when preparing for the Exams. They usually devote too much time to their study, which results in poor health and low efficiency of learning.
As the proverb goes, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. We'd better leave ourselves enough time to sleep since it enables us to learn our lessons more efficiently. What's more, a strong and healthy body is the base for our further study and our future work and creative activities.
Therefore, as we are preparing for the Exams, don't forget that rest, exercise and study are equally important.

I had spent my last day in Rome visiting the teachers of the Art College and taking pictures
with them. And then, I had done some last shopping. I bought some presents: shirts, gloves, some
toys, one of which was an electronic alarm clock for my father.
In the evening, after waiting in the noisy airport build

ing, I was glad to be sitting in the plane.
In a few minutes we would soon be up in the sky on our flight home.
But I had been mistaken. Ten minutes later, instead of enjoying the beauty of the evening sky
from above the cloud, I was sitting in a smoke-filled room with an airline official and a policeman
at my side. On the table in front of me was my suitcase.
The officials were polite. They asked me to show my passport, my ticket and my baggage
check. Then I was requested to open my suitcase and to spread out its contents on the table. Of
course, I did as I was told. The moment I placed the alarm clock on the table, the officials looked
at each other and smile.
I understood immediately that someone must have heard the ticking noise and reported to
the security.
Thank you.
Questions:
11. How did the man spend his last day in Rome?
12. What present did he buy for his father?

possessions, and relatives are increasingly in danger of suffering from the tremendous rise in the cases of burglary and attack.
Figures indicate an ever-increasing crime rate but it is only too easy to imagine "It will
never happen to me". Unfortunately, statistics show that it really can happen to anybody and, if
you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim.
Fortunately, there is something definite which you can do. Protect Alarms can help to
protect your house, simple to operate and fairly cheap.
You must remember that possessing a Protect Alarm is no indication that your house is
packed with valuable possessions. It quite simply indicates to unwelcome visitors that yours is a
house they will not break into easily so they go on to an unprotected house where their job is made
a lot easier.
The free leaflet will tell you how we can protect. We can alarm your house quickly, easily
and cheaply. Write to us, and the address is in the leaflet. Postage is free. Or, telephone us on
32334400, where we have a round-the-clock answering service.
Questions:
14. What's the occupation of the speaker?
15. What's the intention of the speaker?
16. Why is a Protect Alarm important according to the passage?
Section C
( A )
M: Hello?
W: Hello, Roger. It's Laurence.
M: Laurence! I haven't heard from you for ages! How are you?
W: Fine. We've just got back from a few days away with some relatives down on the coast. Anyway, how are things with you and Millie?
M: Great... fine... everything's fine. We've got all Millie's sisters around for lunch at the moment.
W: Yes, I can hear you're busy! I was just phoning to ask if you and Millie are doing anything
next Saturday night. If not, would you like to come for a meal? Patrick and Colin are coming
over, and we thought it would be nice if you were there, too.
M: We can't, I'm afraid. An old

mate of mine from college is getting married up in Scotland, and we're going up there for the wedding. What a shame! It'd be nice to see you all again.
W: Yeah, it is a shame... I know, how about the following Saturday instead? I don't think we've got anything planned that night.
M: Yeah, I think that should be fine. I'll check with Millie and call you back if there's any problem, but... no... that'd be great!
W: Great, well we'll look forward to seeing you. Give me a ring in a week or so to arrange a time.
M: Okay, then. Thanks for calling. See you!
W: Yeah, see you!
( B )
M: Can you tell me a little about yourself?
W: Yes, I finished school in 2004.
M: I see that you did well in you "A" level. Why didn't you go to university when you had left school?
W: I wanted to get a job because I had to help my parents, who had a big family to support then.
M: I see you are now a junior clerk in a trade company. Can you type?
W: Yes, my speed is 60 words per minute.
M: Why do you want to leave your job there?
W: I'd like a job where I can get more experience and learn about different kinds of work.
M: Can you work on Saturdays or Sundays if we need you?
W: Yes, I can.
M: If we offer you a job, when can you start?
W: I must give a week's notice before I leave my present job.
M: I see. Please fill in this form now. If anything turns up, I'll contact you.
