Fresh ideas that are making the grade

Fairview Elementary School, Modesto, California, with some 1,000 students from kindergarten through sixth grade (about 80 percent of them Latino), has long suffered from discipline(纪律) problems, poor test scores, and a near total lack of parental involvement. The difficulties aren’t surprising given that many of the parents—immigrants who work on farms or in factories—speak little or no English.

Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been a First Amendment School, one of 97 developed across the country by the First Amendment Center. The idea behind

the five-year-old programme: To keep America strong, children must be trained to respect many points of view, weigh complex issues, and understand the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution(宪法). As students learn good citizenship, the theory goes, they’ll develop the skills and attitude to do well academically.

Fairview students enjoy “freedoms” other kids might envy (they voted to abolish school uniforms, for example). But the children don’t just exercise rights. They also accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is rated the cleanest of 33 schools in its district). In one departure from tradition, there’s no hand-raising in class. “Instead,” says teacher Deborah Supnet, “we teach them to listen for when the other child stops talking.” Call it an exercise in respect.

Last year, the number of students evaluated advanced in math increased, from 15 to 30 percent. And Fairview graduates in their first middle-school mid-term exam averaged B grades; 96 percent passed all subjects. Particularly encouraging to Principal Rob Williams, the school now has an active parents’ group, Parents With a Voice. One of those parents, Laura Malagon, praises the programme for convincing her to play a more active role in her children’s school life.

2011年高考英语复习:四大板块按部就班 一、听力 对于听力而言,语音、场景词汇和解题方法都是至关重要的。同学们可以总结一下类似邮局场景,购物场景中经常出现的单词,做到能熟练认知快速反应。故事题的听力一定要注意文章的逻辑,通过but,however,luckily这样的词语听出原文真正想要表达的意思。另外,高考听力是在下午三点开始的,建议在考前要将自己的听力兴奋度调整到与考试时间一致。 二、语法词汇 做语法词汇题,明确题目考察的知识点、抓住解题线索是关键。考什么往往可以从选项中看出来,而破题线索通常来源于题干。 以语法考试中的大热门非谓语和从句为例。一般而言,语法部分的选择题中,非谓语的考察可占三至四题,定语从句一题,名词性从句一题,状语从句一题;考试之前除了要将各种从句和非谓语的定义掌握清楚,还应该拥有缜密的解题思路。非谓语的重点是要掌握非谓语和被修饰名词之间的主动被动关系、相对于句中动词的先后关系(多见于非谓语做定语和状语的情况),感官动词和使役动词与非谓语的搭配(多见于非谓语做宾补的情况),以及非谓语现在分词表主动进行、过去分词表被动完成、不定式表将来的本质。可结合先选项后题干的方法,即先看选项,后看句子,通过选项知道题目究竟考查的是定语从句,名词性从句,状语从句,还是非谓语。 根据我们的统计,上海高考十年试卷中出现的单词量接近4900个。但建议大家应该把重点放在真题经常出现的不到1000个高

频词汇上。可以把历年的高考真题拿出来,看听力原文、,阅读素材,总结出现频率高,自己却不熟悉的单词作为冲刺阶段的攻坚。 三、阅读完型 对于阅读题,临考时一定要记住:重点精读关键词定位处,也就是出现重要考点比较多之处,比如:转折、比较、下结论或总结性的语言处,其他细节性的信息可略读,因为干扰项往往来自这些地方,精读后反而会增加干扰选项的迷惑度。阅读题目的一般正确选项应该是对原文的精确改写,应该符合两点特征:形式对应和语义对应,比如原文中出现比较,那么正确选项中也应该对应出现相应形式,同时语义应该是原文的同义替换,也就是相同的意思换了一种表达方式。需要注意的是选项和原文高度相似甚至照抄原文的情况下一定慎重选择。 对于完形填空,一定要注意上下文之间的逻辑关联,注意and,but,although等路标词,一定要选择跟原文上下处相吻合照应的选项,切勿依据自己的思维思考问题。抓住结构、语义及逻辑三条线索,推断和预测选项。 问答阅读是今年的新题型,作为第一年出题,多数题目可以直接定位或者适当转化词形得到相同句义即可解题,因此建议一定要留出一定时间对答新题型。 四、翻译写作 翻译这一部分建议大家在考前这几天里要保证每天5-10句翻译练习,另外留心翻译题中的动词部分,把该动词的用法记忆清楚。注意单词的拼写、冠词的使用、主谓的一致性、信息是否漏译以及标

In English, there are many words borrowed from Latin, French, or even Chinese. In fact, Chinese has never stopped taking words from other languages, say, “ganbu” or “minzhu” from Japanese. So, it’s safe to conclude that it is reasonable to include English which facilitates daily communication. 反对: With English words getting popular in both media and daily life, a Chinese dictionary has included 239 of them, leaving the public divided into two opposing groups: “For” and “Against.” I tend to take the “Against”side for two reasons. Firstly, this inclusion has actually polluted our mother tongue. Sooner or later, many English accents will rise and fall with the four Chinese tones. And, rules don’t tell us how to pronounce such English-turned Chinese words as “wifi” and “Out”in a Chinese way! Secondly, such an inclusion may give rise to prejudices of the educated against those with little knowledge of English.
