As the old saying goes, “A new broom sweeps clean.” Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, took office on Jan 20. Soon after that, the new president began using his power to make changes to the country by signing several executive orders (总统行政令).

The orders include the travel ban (禁令) on refugees (难民) and people from seven mainly Muslim countries, like Iraq and Syria. Trump believes this helps keep terrorism (恐怖主义) out of the US. He also signed an order to build a wall along the southern border (边境), aiming to stop smugglers (走私者) and Mexicans moving to the US illegally (非法地) .

Trump pointed out on his Facebook that this is about keeping the US safe. However, many people, both from the US and other countries, are against the orders.

Judges in the US say that Trump’s travel ban is unconstitutional (违背宪法的), as it is a kind of discrimination (歧视) against Muslims. And world leaders, groups and businesses including those from the United Nations and European Union (欧盟) are also against or have criticized the ban.

Trump also signed another controversial (有争议的) order about the economy. He decided to quit the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP, 跨太平洋伙伴关系协定). It was a free trade agreement between 12 countries around the Pacific, including Australia, Singapore and Japan. TPP was the product of seven years of work under former US President Barack Obama. IF you miss out a meal, do you ever notice yourself starting to get angry or annoyed very easily? Well, this is often known as being “hangry” or being angry because you are very hungry.

But as it turns out, it’s not just a funny phrase, but it is scientifically true! Scientists found this feeling of anger usually comes from having low glucose (葡萄糖) levels in the blood. Glucose is put into the body after you eat.

The brain also needs this to work correctly. When the body is low on glucose, the brain sends hormones (激素) to increase the amount of glucose in the body. Brenda Bustillos, a dietitian at Texas A&M University, US, says this makes it hard for a person to control their feelings.

“Hunger leads to high stress hormones,” said Bustillos, “which makes it hard to manage our feelings.”

Amanda Salis, PhD, University of Sydney, says that we may also be able to thank our ancestors(祖先)for our hanger. Salis says that long ago when there was not much food, people had to be aggressive to eat as much as they could to get enough food to live.

So even now when most people have enough food to eat, there is still that aggressive feeling toward needing food.

书面表达(15分)

Handing in homework on WeChat

WeChat is very useful and popular now. Everybody is using it. Some teachers even require the students to hand in homework through WeChat. The students have different opinions about it.

Some students think it’s more fashionable and interesting. In addition, it’s more convenient for teachers to check homework. Others believe that peer pressure may be caused by comparing homework in friend circles. What’s worse, it’s difficult for students to control themselves. They may get addict ed to phone games easily.

反方As for me, I prefer the traditional way. Handing in homework on WeChat not only takes more time but also makes some students unable to focus on their study. Only if we find a good method to avoid the disadvantages, can it work effectively.

正方As for me, I like WeChat homework. First, I can get quicker reply from the teacher and then correct my mistakes immediately. Moreover, it helps me know how well I’m doing in study compared with classmates. I believe if we make good use of WeChat homework, it can be very helpful to our study.
