1-10

Today I'm going to discuss transportation and communication in the early 19th century in the United States. At that time, inland waterways provided North America's most popular form of long-distance transportation. Travel by rivers was often more convenient than taking a wagon over primitive country roads, especially when shipping heavy loads of farm products or household goods. Where the natural waterways were inadequate, shallow canals were built. The Erie Canal, opened in 1825, connected the Great Lakes with the upper Hudson River. It allowed settlers in the Great Lakes region to send their crops eastward to New York City at the mouth of Hudson at a much lower cost. From there, crops could be shipped to other Atlantic ports. The construction of the Erie Canal also encouraged westward migration along inland waterways and helped populate the frontier. The City of Detroit grew up between two of the Great Lakes. Later a

canal joined the Great Lakes with the Mississippi river system and Chicago became a thriving city. Politically the waterway system united the nation in a way few had imagined possible, by the mid-1800s, faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined. Railroads could be used year round whereas canals were often frozen in the winter. During the first third of the century, however, transportation on rivers, lakes and canals aided greatly in the growth of the United States.

第1题

The Erie Canal joined the Great Lakes with the Hudson River.

A.true

B.false

The Erie Canal…connected the Great Lakes with the upper Hudson River即Erie运河将Great Lakes和Hudson River上游联接起来,而题干说Erie运河和Hudson River汇入Great Lakes,由此可知题干的说法与原文不符,该题的说法是错误的。

Settlers and manufactured products were usually transported from west to east.

A.true

B.false

根据原文可知1825年Erie运河的开放使得大湖区的定居者们可将粮食运到东部纽约城,而且该运河also encouraged westward migration along inland waterways and helped populate the frontier即鼓励了人们沿内陆水道向西部移民。

Shallow canals were built for transportation when natural waterways were inadequate.

A.true

B.false

Where the natural waterways were inadequate, shallow canals were built可知哪里的天然水路不够,哪里就有浅的运河修建。

New York City had a deeper harbor than other Atlantic seaports was one reason for its prosperity during the early 19th century.

A.true

B.false

It allowed settlers in the Great Lakes region to send their crops eastward to New York City at the mouth of Hudson at a much lower cost. From there, crops could be shipped to other Atlantic ports可知,当时大湖区的定居者们将谷物经水道东运至Hudson河口的纽约城,其运费比其它方式便宜许多。

The construction of the Erie Canal encouraged westward migration and helped populate the frontier.

A.true

B.false

The construction of the Erie Canal also encouraged westward migration along inland waterways and helped populate the frontier可知Erie运河的开通鼓励了沿内陆水道向西部的移民,帮助了西部边疆的移民定居。

It takes longer time to travel by river is one of the major reasons that the inland waterway system was unable to compete with other forms of transportation.

A.true

B.false

根据原文by the mid-1800s,faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined.Railroads could be used year round whereas canals were often frozen in the winter可知到19世纪中期,更为快捷、便宜的铁路运输日益流行,运河水运衰落了。

Though inland waterways were important transportation system, they were soon replaced by the more convenient railroads.

A.true

B.false

Politically the waterway system united the nation in a way few had imagined possible,by the mid-1800s,faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined可知,从政治角度看水运系统将全国联系起来,这几乎没人能想到。

The decline of Atlantic seaports was a result of the inland waterway system in the United States.

A.true

B.false

根据原文by the mid-1800s,faster and cheaper railroads became more popular and the canal system declined可知,运河系统的衰落是由于铁路运输的兴起。

According to the passage, inland waterway travel was most popular in the early 1800s.

A.true

B.false

根据原文…in the early 19th century in the United States. At that time, inland waterways provided North America's most popular form of long-distance transportation可知在19世纪早期内陆水运系统是北美最流行的长途运输方式。

原文中that time便指前面的the early 19th century。

第10题

The speaker talks about the role of inland waterways in the nation's growth of America.

A.true

B.false

During the first third of the century, however, transportation on rivers, lakes and canals aided greatly in the growth of the United States,即在19世纪前三分之一段的时间内,美国内陆水运对国家发展做出了重大贡献。

e.g.: He said he was busy, which was not true. We don’t want to enter the house, which is very cold. e.g.: The room of which windows are opposite to the room is large. The chair in which you are sitting is made of iron.

We are pleased to receive your inquiry about our……" Thank you for your interest. We look forward to receiving your order." 例如inquiry(询盘),free on board(离岸价),premium(保险费)等。

Dusk spread over it, abruptly darkening the Seven Hills. These alternations of mood were the despair and joy of Ethan Frome.(Edith Wharton: Ethan Frome) Is it necessary to shout ?

We must seize new opportunities to meet new challenges. By taking more effective measures and being more active in opening to the outside world, we will strive to expand our foreign trade and to absorb more foreign capital. 本例中,英译文将“必须抓住新的机遇”以谓语动词“must seize new opportunities”译出,将“迎接新的挑战”以非谓语动词“to meet new challenges”译出;将“采取更加有力的措施,以更为积极的姿态扩大对外开放”以介词短语“By taking more effective measures and being more active in opening to the outside world”译出,将“力争对外贸易和吸收外资有新的增长”以主句“we will strive to ex pand our foreign trade and to absorb more foreign capital”译出,符合原文所传达的意思及逻辑关系。

It can be inferred from the passage that a historian who wished to compare crime rates per thousand in a European city in one decade of the fifteenth century with crime rates in another decade of that century would probably be most aided by better information about which of the following? Compare crime rates with crime rates 中间被修饰第一个crime rates 的两个修饰成分per thousand in a European city in one decade of the fifteenth century 分隔得很远。在with 之后的第二个crime rates 后面,省略了与前面重复的per thousand in a European city 。

The circumstances surrounding the birth of a female infant in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on Jan.29, 1954,were not promising present was the usual mix that had so often accumulated into a burden too heavy for a single-parent household like the one Oprah Winfrey grew up in. The state in which she was born had laws in place waiting to characterize her as unwelcome, to bar her participation in otherwise accebtable social activities, to shackle her to the residue of slavery and other injustices of the past. The simple truth is that her grandmother, her great-grandmother and all the great-great-grandmothers before them never experienced one day of life free from the harsh decrees of state-sponsored racial repression. In hindsight, it appears that her birth was an uneventful one. But at age three she was reciting speeches from church pulpits. Upon discovering books, the child delved into the written word, turning out weekly book reports for her father. Even during turbulent times, not a moment was wasted. Seeds were being planted, watered, and nurtured. On April 13, 1964, nearly an adolescent and watching television from the linoleum floor of her mother’s walk-up flat in something deep the film industry’s highest honor.

The biannual Guangzhou Fair is attended by almost all foreign trade companies in China and presents a great number of export commodities to buyers from abroad. Many business transactions are concluded at the fair.As sellers and buyers can all gather in one place to conduct trade talks, the fair apparently saves them a great deal of time and money. This explains why the Guangzhou Fair has long been popular among overseas traders. We must seize new opportunities to meet new challenges.By taking more effective measures and being more active in opening to the outside world,we will strive to expand our foreign trade and to absorb more foreign capital.
