I wanted to see how he sold his 32 .

Soon, a young mother with a little boy came by and the little child was attracted by one of the toys that made a noise. The young mother asked for the 33 and it was only one dollar. She pulled out a 10 dollar note from her purse ( 钱包) and told the young man that she was giving him 10 dollars and wanted the 34 back. I was wondering 35 he was going to give it back. He told the young mom to put the money in the bag that was hanging around his neck and take out whatever change he should give her. I realized that this young man depended on trusting people not to cheat him. There was no way for him to know if someone took out more than they should have done. I was so 37 that I bought a toy car from him which I did not need. He said it cost a dollar and I, too, told him that I had only 10 dollars. He told me to do the same thing. 38 I put my 10 dollars in his bag. I put my hand in but did not take any change. I hope he finds that he has more money than he should when he gets home. As I walked down the street I saw another kid walking with his father, so I gave him the little toy. I walked on 39 that the two people would have a smile on their faces that day.

I kept thinking that the world would be a better place if we could all learn to 40 others more, like the young blind street seller of toys.

Planting the Seeds of Change

Catalino Tapia came to the United States with six dollars when he was a young man. He worked hard and finally started his own gardening business. He married and bought a comfortable home in Redwood City, California. Tapia and his wife had two sons, putting the elder into college.

When his son graduated from law school, Tapia was inspired ( 鼓舞) to help other young people go to college, although he himself had never studied beyond the sixth grade. With the help from his sons, Tapia set up a company — the Gardeners Foundation.

Tapia began the company by asking his rich customers for donation. In just two weeks, he had raised $10,000 for scholarships ( 奖学金), and the money kept coming. The Gardeners Foundation now gives at least ten scholarships each year.

"I believe the education of our young people isn't just the responsibility of their parents, especially in the Latino area, where some parents work two or three jobs," says Tapia.

Gloria Escobar, nineteen, received one of the scholarships. Gloria wanted to study architecture ( 建筑), but there were no classes at her local college. The foundation helped her to travel to a college farther away to make her dream true.

Another receiver, Alberto Urieta, hopes to study biology. "To receive a scholarship is so much help because the books are so expensive, and it also gives us a feeling that we're not alone, and someone wants us to make our dreams a reality," says Urieta.

Tapia understands that children who are educated can do more to the country. "We're just planting a little seed," he said. "and it will finally grow into a garden of students, and it will flower and bear fruits." 45.How many people are there in Tapia's family?

A.Three. B.Four. C.Six. D.Eight.

B.Because the books are so expensive at her local college.

D.Because she wants to study biology in a college farther away.

48.What can the Gardeners Foundation do?

A.Help poor parents find more jobs.

B.Help gardeners raise more money.

C.Help young people start their own business.

D.Help students from poor families go to college.

Have your parents ever told you any strange or scary things about protecting your eyes? For example, they might have said that you'd go blind from reading in the dark, but you could make it better by eating a lot of carrots.

This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of. Here are some scientific explanations for three mistakes that people often make about eyes. Let's take a look.

Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?

Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is essential for our eyes' general health. Vitamin A makes the eyes get light into signals, allowing people to see in low light conditions.

However, eating more carrots doesn't help you see better. A certain amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superman vision or allow you to take off your glasses.

If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?www-2-1-cnjy-com

Myopia ( 近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there's a 33% to 60%, and it's down to 6% to 15% for kids with non-myopic parents.

So, no matter how bad your parents' eyesight is, you still have a chance of having good eyesight.

Is it true that people who are color blind can't see colors?

Color blindness doesn't mean that someone can't see colors at all, like a black and white movie. Most commonly, it means that someone has difficulty telling certain colors apart, usually green and red or blue and yellow.

Color blindness is usually a condition caused by not having color cone cells ( 视锥细胞) or the cells not working. If the cells don't react in the right way to differences in wavelengths ( 波长) of light, color blindness appears.

There are different levels of color blindness. Some people only cannot tell the difference between colors in dim light, while others have difficulty in any light. In the most serious form of color blindness, everything is seen in shades of gray.

Changed by New Media

Social media(社交媒体)is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world today. A study carried out by the Pew Research Center showed that 92% of teenagers go online daily. The wide use of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenager's lives.

Changing relationships

High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.

"It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends," Cooper said.

There's also a greater possibilities of things getting lost in translation over social media.

"If half of your relationship is over social media, you don't really know how the other people is reacting," Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.

Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friends through social media. Now he lives in Scotland, but they are still often able to communicate with one another.

"I can feel close to someone that I'm talking to through FaceTime," Kaplan said.

Wanting to be "liked"

The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.

Essena O'Neill said that she had stopped using social media on the social networking service Instagram . The 19-year-old girl thought she had gotten lost in appearing perfect online.

Negative comments ( 负面评论) can also do damage to a teenager's self-esteem ( 自尊). In particular, anonymous ( 匿名的) social media Apps such as Yik Yak may provide chances for cyber bullying ( 网络欺凌).21·cn·jy·com
