CONCORDIA (3-7-0)
PUSH, PUSH, GLIDE
You’ll have to excuse the Cobbers if it takes
them awhile to get used to playing again. It
has been almost one full month since
Concordia last took to the ice. If you are
being precise (which, as readers of the
Gameday program, we ask you never hold us
to always being precise), the last time
Concordia played a game was on December
12 – 26 long days ago. The task of getting
back into the groove is not an easy one as
Kerry Norman’s crew will face the #9 UW-
Superior Yellowjackets. The good news for
the Cobbers is that it will help them prepare
for the rest of the MIAC season which begins
next weekend at St. Thomas.
SO YOU’RE SAYING WE’VE GOT A
CHANCE
It might be a little early to start thinking about
playoffs, but we like to think ahead and see
what might happen in the future. Concordia
will enter 2005 in a four-way tie for fifth place.
The Gameday staff is going to assume (we
know what you are thinking!) and give playoff
berths to the top four teams in the league –
Gustavus, St. Thomas, St. Olaf and
Augsburg. That means the four teams that
are tied for fifth place are fighting for the final
playoff spot in the MIAC postseason
tournament. The top five teams in the
conference make the playoffs. Concordia has
already played two of the three teams they
are tied with – splitting both series against St.
Catherine and St. Ben’s. The last team they
wil face in the logjam is St. Mary’s. That is
the final series of the year and could be loads
of fun for the Cardinal-hating Cobbers.
TAKING THE STING OUT OF THE
YELLOWJACKETS
The Cobbers have one advantage going into
this weekend’s series. Assistant Coach Shyla
Wilson practically owns UW-Superior. She
was 3-0 in her career against the
Yellowjackets and sported a save pct. of
95.5%. If she can dish her secrets to Jenna
Johnson and Jamie Savage, then the two-
game series should be a great way to start
2005!

Kristy Faechner who was among the top
goaltenders in the nation last season,
sophomore Elyse Dowdell and
sophomore Liz Korbol.
The Jackets will also look for leadership in
their freshman class. Noted freshmen
include forward Jamie Cincotta from
Centennial High School, Minnesota and
Brittany Arendt who will add depth to the
Yellowjacket defense. Other noted
freshmen include power forward Rae
Hannah from Notre Dame Hockey
Academy in Saskatchewan, Canada,
Hally Sharrow from Superior Senior High
and Gina Baranzelli from Eveleth-Gilbert
High School in Minnesota.
Last year’s NCHA Coach of t he Year, Dan

needed to compete day in and day out,”
Laughlin said.

and the Cobbers are coming off a season where they missed the MIAC playoffs for the first time in three years. Those facts might cause Concordia head coach Kerry Norman to feel nostalgic, but she is firmly rooted in the present and optimistically looking towards the future.
When Norman looks at her team on paper, she sees a group of players who will not have one top
line that has TNT-like capabilities when it comes to putting the puck in the net, but will have two-three lines that can score goals at opportune times. She also sees a team that will be committed to playing defense and making their opponents earn every goal they score. The reason for Norman’s optimism is quality leadership and renewed commitment to work. Concordia senior captain Lindsay Czarnecki (Riverside, Calif.) will bring her no-nonsense brand of hockey to the forefront of the Cobber team. She led Concordia in scoring last season with 14 goals and eight assists, and was the lone Cobber representative on the MIAC All-Conference Team. Czarnecki, unlike past Cobber goal-scoring snipers, relies on getting in the right spot at the right time and working for every point she gets. Joining Czarnecki on the offensive forefront will be a pair of sophomores. Hannah Impola (Brainerd, Minn.) and Brandie Dunn (Plano, Texas) were both in the top four in the team in scoring last year. Impola had a symmetrical eight goals and eight assists, while Dunn contributed 10 goals and five assists. Impola finished sixth in the MIAC among conference freshmen. Defensively, the Cobbers will lean on the junior duo of Kali Palmer (N. Richland Hills, Texas) and Sam Gunning (Brainerd, Minn.) . Palmer is the team’s best offensive defenseman and can jump into the attack to add critical scoring chances at the opportune time. Last year she was fifth on the team in scoring and finished with five goals and four assists. She was 10th in scoring among conference defensemen. Gunning, more of a “stay -at-home” type defenseman, had six assists in 2003-04. She makes more of an impact in front of the Cobber goal and slows down the opposing team’s attack through the neutral ice area. Goaltending will be the strength of the Cobber squad in 2004-05. Norman will have the luxury of being able to call on two very experienced goalies. Jamie Savage (Sr., Apple Valley) and Jenna Johnson (Jr., Wadena, Minn.) have both played in over 12 games in their careers. Last year, Johnson had a team-best 3.18 goals against average. Savage was close behind with a 3.24 mark. Both goalies will have the opportunity to carry the Cobbers in big games in 2004-05, and both have the ability to single-handedly shut down the best attackers in the league.
If Concordia can cut down on its time in the penalty box (the Cobbers led the MIAC in penalty minutes in 2003-04) and play committed defense in all three zones, then Kerry Norman will be
looking at a return engagement in the playoffs and a rock-like foundation for the future.

MIAC Player of the Week
December 13, 2004
Augsburg College junior forward Jocelyn Cookson (Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) had four goals and one assist for five points on the weekend, as Augsburg swept St. Catherine 4-1 and 4-2 in MIAC play. In Friday's 4-1 home victory, Cookson claimed a natural hat trick with three consecutive goals, one in the first period and two in the second period, as Augsburg built a 3-0 lead en route to the victory. It was Cookson's first collegiate hat trick. In Saturday's 4-2 win at St. Catherine, Cookson had a goal and an assist. Cookson, a transfer from Division I Wisconsin, currently stands third on the team in scoring (18 points, with 10 goals) and eight assists. Cookson is one of three Auggies to be ranked in the top 20 nationally in points-per-game (she ranks 19th), and currently ranks 16th nationally in goals-per-game.
