AMERICAN ENGLISH AND BRITISH ENGLISH

Many students want to know about the differences between American English and British English. How did these differences come about? There is no quick answer to this question. At first the language in Britain and America was the same. In 1776 America became an independent country. After that, the language slowly began to change. For a long time the language in America stayed the same, while the language in England changed. For example. 300 years ago the English talked about "fall". Today, most British people talk about "autumn", but Americans still talk about "fall". In the same way Americans still use the expression "I guess" (meaning "I think"), just as the British did 300 years ago.

Now more and more people are keeping pets at their homes, but they do not take good care of them. These pets have brought some trouble to other people. For example, the waste of the pets and the great noises in the early morning or at midnight prevent people from enjoying their life. Today a child was even bitten by a dog, which caused a fierce argument between the neighbors. Dear Li Hua,

How are you? With this letter I’d like to introduce my hometown—Jiangsu Province to you.

Situated in the east of China, Jiangsu is one of the most developed provinces of our country. It is a province with a large population of more than 70,000,000, but not much farmland for people to live on, and it lacks natural resources with an area of more than 100,000 km2.

With the development of economy and the growth of its population, more and more good farmland has been used to build houses and factories. As a result, farmland is decreasing year by year.

Fortunately people are realizing the importance of protecting farmland and the government has taken measures to stop the illegal use of farmland.

In my opinion, it’s our duty to protect our farmland as well as our obligation to benefit the younger generations.

Looking forward to your reply.

Best wishes.

One possible version:

Dear editor,

Recently our class have had a heated discussion on how middle school students should make friends.

As we all know, good interpersonal relationship plays an important role in building harmonious society.

Many people suggest that they should make friends who are of great benefit to their studies,so they will help each other and make greater progress in their studies. Some believe that they should have friends related to their life.Whenever they have difficulty dealing with problems in terms of life, they can help rid themselves of the problems. In addition, others agree that they should have some friends who can listen to them attentively and share their bitterness and joy.

What I want to stress is that each of us should have a true friend. To make friends,we should try to remember the names of the people we contact and learn not to judge people by their appearances.Besides,we need to be friendly and care about them. When disagreement does occur,it’s wise of us to talk it over to others. In brief, making true friends can really enable us to improve ourselves.

Y ours ever,

Li Hua

Poor relationship between parents and their children are very common. Whether we like it or not, our parents are responsible for us at least until we're out of high school. So rather than get upset about that fact, maybe we should focus on some ways to make our relationship better. The best way, in my opinion, is to learn to really communicate with my parents. When I find myself arguing with my mom and dad, I try to stop. If I can manage to stop myself from talking, I usually find that I can calm down quickly. I guess I'm usually acting out of emotion rather than logic(逻辑). But if I can stop arguing for a minute, it seems that my opinion changes and I start to realize that I'm a bit childish. Emotionally I may still be upset, but logically I understand that yelling(大 叫大嚷) and fighting surely won't make things better. Once I've stopped arguing, I look at my parents in the eye. You'd be amazed at how much easier it is to communicate with your parents when you've actually looking at them. Looking away doesn't do much of anything except for giving them the impression that I'm not listening or that I don't care. It's much easier to see things eye to eye when you're physically seeing them eye to eye. Finally, I listen to what they're saying (or at least I try). Communication can't happen unless both sides hear and listen to each other. There is nothing wrong with my hearing, but that doesn't mean I always listen to the sounds that people are making. When I argue with my parents, I can physically hear what they're saying without mentally listening to it. Whether I admit it or not, my parents' experience can actually help them give me

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness". If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure. 1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________. A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to deal with sudden changes in life 2.
