As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. 36 you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to 37 down. But relaxation is 38 for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a 39 part of everyday life and there is no way to 40 it. In fact, it is not the bad thing that it is often supposed to be. A 41 amount of stress is important to provide motivation and give 42 to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control 43 it can lead to poor performance and 44 health.

The amount of stress a person can bear 45 very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such 46 are obviously chief material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at first 47 of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in 48 form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make a choice between 49 and fight. And in more ancient days the choices made the 50 between life and death. The crises(危机)we meet today are 51 to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it requires the same response. It is when such a reaction 52 long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes 53 . Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have 54 links with stress. 55 we cannot remove stress from our lives we need to find ways to deal with it. The high noise of modern life may affect speech and language development in the very young, according to a study that found the auditory(听觉的)parts of the brains of young mice are slower to organize properly in the presence of continuous sounds.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, reared a group of rats in an environment of continuous background noise and found that their brain circuits that receive and interpret(解释)sound did not develop at the same rate as animals that were raised in a quieter environment.

Edward F. Chang and Michael Merzenich, co-authors of the study appearing in the journal Science, said that the continuous noise delayed the organization of auditory neurons(神经细胞)during a critical two-to-three-week period after the rat pups were born.

For rats not exposed to the noise, the auditory cortex(皮层)neurons during this period gathered into a smaller area and began developing a selective response to sounds.

But for the noise-exposed rats, this organization was slowed, causing a delay in the development of the ability to discriminate(辨别)specific sound tones. The researchers said it took three or four times longer for the rats raised in a noisy environment to reach the basic bench marks (基准)of auditory development seen in the rat pups not exposed to noises.

Although the rat is not a perfect model for what happens in humans, the authors note, the study does suggest that high levels of noise might possibly affect some language learning in babies.

“These fi ndings suggest that environmental noise, which is commonly present in contemporary child-rearing environments, can potentially contribute to auditory and language—related development delays,” the authors wrote in Science.

The authors noted that although the brain development was delayed in rats exposed to the noise, their brains did eventually mature(成熟)normally.

Happiness is genetic

HAPPINESS and sadness are states of being that define the way we view the world. It is often said that some people by nature have a sunny disposition(性格). Now scientists may have discovered why.

Some people may be hard-wired(天生的)for happiness, while others are genetically negative, scientists have suggested in a study published late February, in British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B(《皇家学会学报B》).

Earlier research had already established that the gene known as 5-HTTLPR plays a key role in determining how the neurotransmitter(神经传递素)serotonin(含于血液中的复合胺)works within the brain. Serotonin, a hormone(荷尔蒙), passes chemical messages between nerve cells.

It has been closely linked to mood. Several anti-depressant(抗抑郁)drugs regulate serotonin levels.

Scientists had also identified three variants(变体)of the gene. Two so-called "short" variants were linked to a higher risk of depression and suicide(自杀)attempts. Unlike the two "short" variants, the "long" variant of 5-HTTLPR showed a clear dislike of negative images(图像), such as fierce animals, and a clear liking for positive ones, such as flowers.

Researchers from the University of Essex in Britain, led by Elaine Fox, showed participants a series of images.

The images were divided into three kinds: negative ones aimed at inspiring fear or stress such as a spider or person about to commit suicide, pleasant ones and neutral(中性的)ones.

The participants who had the long variant of the 5-HTTLPR gene "showed a clear dislike of negative material alongside a careful attention for positive material," the researchers found. They paid close attention to the pretty pictures, and ignored the frightening ones. On the other hand, the short variant groups had the opposite reaction.

In January, the Australian government organized "happiness workshops", teaching government staff how to be happy. The department that held the "happiness workshops" said unhappy staff weren’t productive staff.

Australian political opposition parties have argued that the "happiness workshops" are probably a waste of money and couldn’t increase productivity as intended. However, whether the workshop will have a happy or disappointing result, we will have to wait and see.

60. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The Australian government wants its government staff to be happy.

B. The reason why certain people have a sunny disposition has been discovered.

C. Scientists have discovered several anti-depressant drugs to control moods.

D. Scientists have found different variants of 5-HTTLPR exist in the same person.

61. From the third paragraph, we know that ______.

A. affected by 5-HTTLPR, the neurotransmitter serotonin works within the blood

B. there are 5 variants of 5-HTTLPR genes which control people’s moods

C. how the neurotransmitter serotonin works is greatly determined by 5-HTTLPR

D. 5-HTTLPR receives chemical messages from nerve cells

62. What does “It” in the sentence "It has be en closely linked to mood." in the 3rd paragraph refer to?

A. Serotonin

B. A nerve cell

C. 5-HTTLPR

D. The brain

63. If a person had the long variant of 5-HTTLPR, he or she would probably ______.

A. like the images of spiders

B. prefer the images of crocodiles

C. enjoy an image of green trees

D. suffer from depression very often

64. What can we infer from the passage?

A. People’s moods can change a little bit under the influence of certain drugs.

B. Researchers showed participants of the research two kinds of images.

C. A person may possess one long and one short variant of 5-HTTLPR at the same time.

D. The author firmly believes that "happiness workshops" will not change people’s moods.

A quick look at the lengths of children’s index and ring fingers can be used to predict how well students will perform in education tests, new research claims.

Kids with longer ring fingers compared to index fingers are likely to have higher math scores than literacy or oral scores on the college entrance exam, while children with the reverse finger-length are likely to have higher reading and writing, or oral, scores versus math scores.

Scientists have known that different levels of the hormones testosterone(雄性激素)and estrogen(雌性激素)account for the different finger lengths, which are a reflection of areas of the brain that are more highly developed than others, said psychologist Mark Brosnan of the University of Bath, who led the study.

Exposure to testosterone is said to promote development of areas of the brain often associated with mathematical skills, he said. That hormone makes the ring finger longer. Estrogen exposure does the same for areas of the brain associated with oral ability and tends to lengthen the index finger relative to the ring finger.

To test the link to children’s scores on the College Board’s Scholastic Assessment Test, Brosnan and his colleagues made photocopies of children’s palms and measured the length of their index and ring fingers. They used the finger-length rates as a standard for the levels of testosterone and estrogen exposure.

The researchers then looked at boys’ and girls’ test performances separately and compared

them to finger-length rate measurements. They found a clear link between high testosterone exposure, indicated by the longer index finger compared to the ring finger, and higher scores on the math SAT.

Similarly, they found higher literacy SAT scores for the girls among those who had lower testosterone exposure, as indicated by a shorter ring finger compared with the index finger.

65. It’s likely that if a Chinese child with a longer index finger than his ring finger, he will probably get good marks in ______.

A. math

B. physics

C. chemistry

D. Chinese

66. What can make your index finger longer than your ring finger according to the research?

A. Estrogen.

B. Testosterone.

C. Vitamin.

D. Vegetables.

67. Which of the following statements is NOT correct in the passage?

A. A child with a longer index finger than his ring finger will fail in the math exam.

B. Girls with shorter ring fingers get higher literacy SAT scores.

C. Kids with longer ring fingers are likely to have higher math scores.

D. The length of the finger has something to do with hormones.

The night was soft and warm as I lay on our living room sofa, gazing at the ceiling.I was thinking of the hospital. We had gone there that afternoon to visit my father for Valentine’s Day.Daddy was in a high bed that was folded in half some way.He looked alright to me.I didn’t know why he kept going to that place anyway.

I sat as quietly as possible. My trouble was that I wanted to hug him and I was afraid of what Mama would say if I climbed up on his bed to do it.I didn’t know why she would mind—I only knew she would.Sometimes she said I was too rough. But I was such a little girl and Daddy was so big…how could I hurt him? I thought there must be some other reason why he couldn’t wrestle with me like he used to.Maybe he was too tired.

My parents talked for a long time while I looked out of the window and played with my brother and sister.I didn’t like that place and I wanted to go.There didn’t seem to be anything to do there. Then, all at once,we were leaving.Daddy called me to his bedside and told me to be sure to say my prayers.I said I would and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Then I was glad to leave that building. The people in there were sick…except,of course,my Daddy. He was not sick

at a11.

As I settled comfortably into the depths of the sofa, deep in thought.I was startled by the shrill sound of the telephone. That made me angry-now Mama would get up and find I was not sleeping yet.Why did somebody have to call then anyway?

Just as I had suspected,Mama appeared.Mama spoke for only a few minutes, asking questions like “when?” and“how?” She shook me then and told me to go into my own room.I knew it --- the telephone call would ruin everything. Then she woke my oldest sister. In a few seconds the whole house was buzzing with some sort of news.“At eleven o’clock.” “…it had to happen s ometime…” “…too young to be dead.” I heard these phrases, but I couldn’t put together their meaning.

Mama came then and told me he was dead.My Daddy was dead? No! No! No! It was not true.He couldn’t be dead.He was alive----he had kissed me only that afternoon.People didn’t die just like that! It was not like stepping on a fly…people took years to die…they only died when they were old…very old with gray hair and wrinkles and stooped bodies.Young people don’t die.Not people I knew…not anyone I 1oved.Not my father! He was mine and no one could take my father away from me.He would 1ive forever.

I hated that person who called. It was not true and that was a horrible thing to say.It was not funny. It scared me.Mama believed it,though. She shouldn’t.If she only 1istened to me I’d tell her the truth…IT ISN’T TRUE…IT ISN’T!

Just wait—next time Daddy came home I’d tell him about the person who called. He’d laugh and say Mama shouldn’t have taken it seriously. After a11.That couldn’t happen. He was not even sick.

And do you know what else would happen when Daddy came home the next time? I would jump on his lap and hug him until he couldn’t even breathe! And he wouldn’t mind—because that’s what daddies were for.

68.The little girl’s mother would not let her hug her father because .

A.she was not allowed to do that in the hospital

B.she might upset her father

C.he was too tired and couldn’t wrestle with her like he used to

D.her father was so sick that her roughness might hurt him

69.After reading the story, we understand it better that if you really love someone,.

A.you should let him or her know

B.you should hug him or her all the time

C.you should take care of him or her more carefully

D.you should not be rough with or hurt him or her

70.The best title of the story might be .

A.My Daddy and Me B.Daddy Would Come Home Again

C.Don’t Wait to Give Daddy a Hug D.My Daddy Would Live Forever

第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分, 满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格的空格处里填人最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格填1个单词。

In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality —independent will — that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.

The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(给人深刻印象的)evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.

But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自强的)effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.

The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”

Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline(training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.

Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的)purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.

In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

Should Yuanmingyuan Be Rebuilt?

Yuanmingyuan, “Garden of all gardens”, was burnt and fell into ruins in 1860.Recently my classmates had a discussion about whether it should be rebuilt or not.

Supporters of rebuilding the garden say only by doing so can we see the original sight of the garden, which no wonder reflects the Chinese civilization. And it will be another place of interest for tourists. If partly rebuilt, it will provide a comparison and help us remember the history.

Those who disagree think it more reasonable to keep the garden like this. The ruins will remind us of the past. We should never forget the history. Other buildings like Palace Museum and Summer Palace can also be symbols of the Chinese culture, so it is not necessary to rebuild this garden. Some also worry that the environment will be destroyed when the construction goes on in this district.

So you see, opinions vary and it’s hard to say which is right and which is not.

Even the Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese includes 239 English words. Some people support it while others do not. Generally, I am in favour of the inclusion. As the number of English learners is on the rise, it’s not difficult for them to understand these words in Chinese contexts. Besides, it is, on some occasions, more convenient to use English words. Most people nowadays use “IT” instead of its translation “xinxi jishu.” In our global village, we can see that it’s not uncommon for one language to borrow words from other languages. In English, there are many words borrowed from Latin, French, or even Chinese. In fact, Chinese has never stopped taking words from other languages, say, “ganbu” or “minzhu” from Japanese. So, it’s safe to conclude that it is reasonable to include English which facilitates daily communication. 反对: With English words getting popular in both media and daily life, a Chinese dictionary has included 239 of them, leaving the public divided into two opposing groups: “For” and “Against.” I tend to take the “Against”side for two reasons. Firstly, this inclusion has actually polluted our mother tongue. Sooner or later, many English accents will rise and fall with the four Chinese tones. And, rules don’t tell us how to pronounce such English-turned Chinese words as “wifi” and “Out”in a Chinese way! Secondly, such an inclusion may give rise to prejudices of the educated against those with little knowledge of English. Just for one illustration, while college students take “Bye-bye”for granted when parting from each other, it may unconsciously hurt the feelings of someone who is used to “zaijian.”
