Imagine walking into a restaurant and being greeted by a robot instead of a human. And then, when you’re seated, another robot comes to take your order and yet

other robots cook your food and bring it out to you. But now it has turned into reality in a Chinese restaurant called Dalu Robot. The restaurant has been a hit with customers who really want to see what the robots are able to do for them. The robots can also be seen in action in a video made at the restaurant and posted on YouTube.

The restaurant uses eighteen different kinds of robots in all, each unique in what it can do. Some robot waiters take orders and still others bring the food and drinks to the table. And behind the scenes, there are robots that cook noodles and others that brew tea. It is very mechanized, and uses other technologies as well, such as a conveyer built to present the meals on trays for the wait staff to carry to the table. Also, there is a special part of the floor with electronics that help the wait staff find their way around the restaurant and keep track of which meals go to which patrons.

One of them is even a robot dog to amuse the kids. Customers are greeted with the messages “Earth Person, Hello, Welcome to the Robot Restaurant” and robots carry out all of the roles traditionally held by human beings, even stopping by to ask how things are going during the meal. And while they eat, patrons are entertained by a robot that sings, and even takes requests.

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, “You mean fortunately. ” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.

My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to grumble as I approached it but now I tell myself the following: This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.

Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university

degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved. ”

One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity(逆境). From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents, afflictions and difficulties. Some are of our making but many confront us through no fault of our own. While we cannot choose the adversity we can choose our attitude towards it.

Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said, “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, you’ll never use crutches(拐杖)or a stick, then have a go at everything. Go to school, join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible. ”

The biographies(传记)of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.

Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.

59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author of the passage?

A. Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to take exercise.

B. People are silly to pay to go to the gym.

C. Those who want to achieve success cannot expect to live an easy life.

D. People’s attitude towards adversity is the only factor that determines whether they will succeed.

A. Failure is the mother of success

B. A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit

C. If you venture nothing, you will have nothing

D. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try

61. Following this passage, the author will further talk about.

A. how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards the adversity he faced

B. what steps to take to change your attitude towards the adversity you face

C. what great people have in common

D. why it is important to keep optimistic in face of adversity

62. Which of the following can best function as the title of the passage?

A. Face Adversity with a Smile

B. Different Attitudes towards Adversity

C. Nothing is Impossible

D. Life Is Full of Adversity

(C)

(原创)Survivors of a bus crash that killed nine people on a partly icy section of interstate(州际公路)in rural Eastern Oregon said on Monday that some passengers were thrown from the vehicle through broken windows after it skidded(打滑)out of control, smashed through a guardrail(护栏)and plummeted(垂直落下)60 meters down an embankment(路堤).

When the tour bus came to a rest, terrified passengers, most of them Koreans, looked around for their loved ones.

“Some mothers screamed to find their son or daughter. ” said Jaemin Seo, a 23-year-old exchange student from Suwon, South Korea, who is studying in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The charter bus, owned by a Canadian company, crashed on Sunday just east of Pendleton while returning to Canada from Las Vegas—one of the stops on a nine-day western US tour.

Aboard were 48 people, some of them were exchange students from South Korea. Some passengers were from British Columbia, and some from the US state of Washington. Investigators said there also may have been a Japanese passenger and one from the Chinese island of Taiwan.

The survivors, who range in age from 7 to 74, were sent to 10 hospitals in Oregon, Washington state and Idaho. At least 10 were released on Monday, police said.

The crash occurred near a spot on the interstate called Deadman Pass, at the top of a steep, 11-km descent from the Blue Mountains. That section of road is so

notorious that state transportation officials published a warning for truck drivers saying it has “some of the most changeable and severe weather conditions in the Northwest” .

But a state transportation spokesman said that while there were icy spots where the crash occurred, it was nothing unusual for this time of year.

He said a sanding truck had applied sand a few hours earlier and was behind the bus making another run when the crash occurred. The sand truck driver was among the first at the scene, adding that the highway has been shut down several times this winter, mostly due to crashed trucks blocking the roadway.

Seo said he was awakened by screaming and was ejected from a broken window as the bus careened down the hill. Seo had a broken ankle, a gash in his arm that required stitches(缝线)and shallow scratches across his face.

We are all faced with challenges constantly in every area of our lives. 71

The truth is that you will have to deal with difficult problems throughout your life, whether it is in your personal life or career. Most of us get really afraid and run away from problems because we don’t want to accept reality. Running away from your problems is the worst thing you can do to deal with the challenges you are faced with. Here are some tips for you on learning how to deal with everyday challenges.

Please bear in mind that you shouldn’t overact when coming across challenges. Overacting to a problem will cause you to make bad decisions. 72Next time you are faced with a challenge, stay calm so you can make smarter decisions.

73If you cannot accept reality, you will feel very frustrated with your life. Once you can accept reality, you will be able to be calmer and think more clearly about how to get a step closer towards your goals every day.

Many people make a habit of blaming others for all their problems. They fail to take full responsibility for the decisions they have made in life. The more you blame others for the challenges you are faced with, the more you will make people dislike

you and not want to be around you. 74

Don’t compare your lifestyle with others. Of course, it is really difficult not to compare ourselves with other people. However, the more often we do that, the more frustrated we will feel. 75The key thing to remember is that you create your own story and success in life.

A. Accept the reality of the present moment.

B. Try to look at change as a positive challenge, not as a threat.

C. There will always be a person that may have accomplished more than you.

D. Our focus may entirely be on how we can deal with the challenge that has come our way.

E. When we are not in control of our emotions, we will make decisions that we will regret later.

F. However, most people have a hard time accepting and dealing with these challenges that arise.

G. As a result, the first thing you should do when faced with a personal challenge is not point fingers at others.

必修4 Unit 1 A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one

Following Jane ’ s way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family beings to wake up and move off. Them we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as long as in a human family. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it.
