Technical Report ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ series
1.
General information
The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ are oxidatively curing 1pack conformal coatings on the basis of modified polyurethane resins (PUR). All symbols that are used in this technical data sheet and on our containers, such as D I L , are explained on our website www.peters.de in the section “Service – Symbols on labels“.
2.
Application
The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ ? protect assembled pcbs even under increased climatic stress against moisture, especially against the effects of condensate, ? insulate electrical equipment, connections, switch panels, terminal boards, etc. ? can be soldered-through for repair purposes at soldering iron temperature and subsequently reapplied. The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ are used to protect assembled pcbs that have to fulfil high requirements regarding quality and service life. This is especially valid for pcbs or flat packs for: ? performance electronic ? the automotive industry ? household appliances (hobby tools, washing machines and others) ? electronic/electrical measuring and control units ? electrical appliances equipped with electronic controls (industrial scales, medical appliances, industrial robots, etc.) ? the military sector ? shipbuilding and off-shore technology ? aerospace technology ? explosion-protected equipment ? appliances for telecommunications.
3.
Special notes
With the conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ extremely environmentally friendly conformal coatings are available that are absolutely free of aromatic hydrocarbon solvents (among others benzene, toluene and xylene), chromium and lead. They do not contain substances listed in the RoHS directive 2002/95/EC, EU End-Of-Life Vehicle directive 2000/53/EC and WEEE directive 2002/96/EC.Furthermore, they contain neither free or volatile isocyanate nor free isocyanate groups. The wetting potential of the conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ is comparable to that of the ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 N series. The wetting of critical areas, as for instance sharp-edged component leads, is achieved without the addition of any wetting agents (Index N), as the used solvents show a lower surface tension. The resin body is identical with that of the ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 N series and thus a warranty for the excellent properties of this lacquer system, for which numerous approvals, for example in the automotive industry, exist. The independent test institute Trace Laboratories-East in the USA, has performed tests according to IPC-CC-830B (substituting MIL-I-46058) on the ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ series and confirmed that the conformal coatings meet requirements of that norm. Moreover, the conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ are resistant to the mixed flowing gas

test according to DIN EN 60068-2-60 and BMW GS 95003-4. An accredited test laboratory, the Technologie-Zentrum Oberfl?chentechnik und Umweltschutz Leipzig GmbH (Technology Centre for Surface Technology and Environmental Protection), has performed tests on ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ as a representative for the whole ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ series. We received the test report no. 103b/03 accordingly. Corresponding test certificates can be accessed in the “Service – Certificates” section on our report manual CD and on our website. The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ have been approved as permanent coatings with the best flame class V-0 acc. to UL 94 (Approbation no. file E 80315, Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Northbrook, Illinois 60062). registered trade mark of The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ can be used in a temperature range of -40 up to +140 °C [-40 up to 284 °F], while at the lower and upper ends of this range the performance and reliability of the material can be negatively affected in some applications. In these cases additional pre-trials and tests are required. The lacquer layers achieved with the conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ are extremely tracking resistant. Even in case of pcbs made of a base material with tracking values of CTI 225 tracking values of CTI > 600 can be achieved by applying the conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ. The conformal coatings of the series ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-BA-FLZ differ from the ELPEGUARD? SL 1301 ECO-FLZ series owing to their special solvent composition (Index BA = butyl acetate.) which makes them particularly uncritical to cure under components. A special technical report on these products is available upon request. In our report manual this technical report is filed under group 1. On our report manual CD, technical reports can be accessed in the “Products“ section.
3.1 Special viscosity adjustments
The conformal coatings with the index /17, /20, /23 are adjusted to a viscosity of 17, 20 and 23 s flow time respectively (measured per DIN 53 211/4 mm flow cup/20 °C [68 °F]) and are thus particularly suitable for selective coating units and for dip coating. An adjustment to the individual equipment technology is recommended. Nevertheless, corresponding pre-trials are mandatory.
4.

Since the many different permutations make it impossible to evaluate the whole spectrum (parameters, reactions with materials used, chemical processes and machines) of processes and subsequent processes in all their variations, the parameters we recommend are to be viewed as guidelines only. We advise you to determine the exact process limitations within your production environment, in particular as regards compatibility with your specific follow-up processes, in order to ensure a stable fabrication process and products of the highest possible quality. The specified product data is based upon standard processing/test conditions of the mentioned norms and must be verified observing suitable test conditions on processed printed circuit boards. Feel free to contact our application technology department (ATD) if you have any questions or for a consultation.
7.1 Adjustment of viscosity
! Adjust the processing viscosity for each application process by means of thinner V 1301 ECO (see item 3.1 of the Application Information sheet AI 1/1 “Adjustment of the processing viscosity“) and observe the recommended processing temperature. DIL to be thinned with thinner V 1301 ECO

7.3 Duplicate coating
! Observe the advice given in section 8.1 “Application of too high coating thicknesses/duplicate coating” of our Application Information sheet AI 1/1. In case high coating thicknesses are necessary a duplicate coating is possible. The second coating is possible at the following times: ? after a short drying of the first coating ? after drying for 30 min at 80 °C [176 °F] ? after drying for at least 24 hours at room temperature. Never apply the second coating between the described drying phases since wrinkling may result.
8.
Drying/curing
Drying is effected at room temperature and/or in hot-air drying units and takes place in two steps. The first step is the physical drying (evaporation of solvents) and the second step is the oxidative drying (absorption of atmospheric oxygen). ! Observe the advice given in Section 7 of the Application Information sheet AI 1/1 "Drying/Curing". ! Cure the assembly without the casing in order to ensure sufficient air circulation (see in particular item 7.2 “Oxidative curing“ of our AI 1/1).
? Physical drying
The following values are valid for a wet film thickness of approx. 50 μm (corresponds to a dry film thickness of approx. 25 - 30 μm).
at room temperature (approx. +23 °C) [73.4 °F] Dust dry Tack-free based on DIN EN 60464 (IEC 60464) approx. 45 min approx. 80 min in hot-air drying units with circulating air approx. 15 min at 80 °C [176 °F]
? Oxidative drying
The oxidative drying process at room temperature is completed at the earliest 96 hours after the tack-free stage has been reached owing to the necessary absorption of oxygen (see also Item 6.3 "Electrical properties“). ! After the tack-free stage has been reached, allow at least 96 hours' drying at room temperature until you check the electrical properties of the coating or encapsulate the assemblies. The oxidative drying process can be accelerated in a circulating air oven. ! Consider the temperature resistance of the flat pack and the assembly. ! Check the electrical properties (see Item 6.3) to ensure drying is completed. The time needed for drying in a circulating air oven is, among others, dependent upon the component geometry, coating thickness, oven loading, etc.
