The University of California was chartered in 1868 and established at Berkeley in 1875. South Hall, an ivy-covered Gothic-revival building of red brick, is the only survivor of the nineteenth century campus buildings. Today, the Berkeley campus is the senior member of the nine-campus University of California System. Berkeley offers a full range of academic majors in programs. In a national survey published in fall 1992, Berkeley placed highest of all public universities in ranking that included five attributes: reputation, selectivity, faculty resources, financial resources, and student satisfaction. More students who earn bach elor’s degrees at Berkeley complete Ph. D’s than graduates of any other university in the country.

Undergraduate students can choose from more than 5,000 different courses and over 100

majors or they can design their own individual majors. The graduate division offers professional and academic degrees in more than 100 majors. Aiding students in their course work is a campus network of twenty-four libraries, including one especially for undergraduates. There are also man support facilities and services available, such as the Student Learning Center, financial aid counseling, housing assistance, graduate and professional school advising, and career placement assistance. The 1, 200-acre campus stretches from downtown Berkeley through wooded hills that overlook

San Francisco Bay. The city of Berkeley (population 105,000)offers the lively background of one of America’s more culturally diverse and politically adventurous small cities. The surrounding San Francisco Bay area provides an abundance of recreational and cultural events.

A weather map is an important tool for geographers. A succession of three or four maps presents a continuous picture of weather changes. Weather forecasters are able to determine the speed of air masses and fronts; to determine whether an individual pressure area is deepening or becoming shallow and whether a front is increasing or decreasing in intensity. They are also able to determine whether an air mass is retaining its original characteristics or taking on those of the surface over which it is moving. Thus, a most significant function of the map is to reveal a synoptic picture of

conditions in the atmosphere at a given time.

All students of geography should be able to interpret a weather map accurately. Weather maps contain an enormous amount of information about weather condition existing at the time of observation over a large geographical area. They reveal in a few minutes what otherwise would take hours to describe. The United States Weather Bureau issues information about approaching, storms, floods, frosts and all climatic conditions in general. Twice a month it issues a 30-day "out-look" which is a rough guide to weather conditions likely to occur over broad areas of the United States. These 30-day outlooks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels which often set

the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms.

Considerable effort is being exerted today to achieve more accurate weather predictions. With the use of electronic instruments and earth satellites, enormous gains have taken place recently in identifying and tracking storms over regions which have but few meteorological stations.Extensive experiments are also in progress for weather modification studies. But the limitations of weather modification have prevented meteorological results except in the seeding of super?cooled, upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional rainfall on the windward side of mountain ranges. Nevertheless, they have provided a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of weather elements.

(26).The observation of weather conditions by satellites is advantageous because it_______.

A. enables man to alter the weather

B. makes weather prediction easier

C. gives the scientist information not obtained readily otherwise

D. uses electronic instruments

(27) . One characteristic of weather maps NOT mentioned by the author in this passage is

A. fronts

B. thermal changes

C. frost

D. wind speed (28). The thirty-day forecast is determined by examining_______.

A. daily weather maps

C. satellite reports

D. changing fronts (29). At the present time, experiments are being conducted in_____

A. 30-day "outlook"

B. controlling storms

C. controlling weather

D. determining density of pressure groups (30). Artificial rainmaking has been most successful in the_______.

A. lake area

B. western slope of mountains

C. grass lands

D. windward side of mountains

Passage three

We have a crisis on our hands. You mean global warming? The world economy? No, the decline

of reading. People are just not doing it anymore, especially the young. Who's responsible? Actually, it's more like, What is responsible? The Interact, of course, and everything that comes with it - Facebook, Twitter (微博). You can write your own list.

There's been a warning about the imminent death of literate civilization for a long time. In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to spell doom for the written world. None did. Reading survived; in fact it not only survived, it has flourished. The world is more literate than ever before - there are more and more readers, and more and more books.

The fact that we often get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Take the arrival of e-book readers as an example. Devices like Kindle make reading more convenient and are a lot more environmentally friendly than the traditional paper book.

As technology makes new ways of writing possible, new ways of reading are possible. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before. Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations, an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links: to texts, pictures, and videos. In the future, the way people write novels, history, and philosophy will resemble nothing seen in the past.

On the other hand, there is the danger of trivialization. One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long "digests" of the great novels. War and Peace in a sentence? You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span - that we will be incapable of, reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration.

In such a fast-changing world, in which reality seems to be remade each day, we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us. This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone utterly in tune with modem technology but able to make sense of

a dynamic, confusing world.

In the 15th century, Johannes Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in Europe had a huge impact on civilization. Once upon a time the physical book was a challenging thing. We should remember this before we assume that technology is out to destroy traditional culture.

(31). Which of the following paragraphs briefly reviews the historical challenges for reading?

A. Paragraph One.

B. Paragraph Two.

C. Paragraph Three.

D. Paragraph Four.

(32). The following are all cited as advantages of e-books EXCEPT

A. imaginative design.

B. environmental friendliness.

C. convenience for readers.

D. multimodal content.

(33). According to the passage, people need knowledge of modem technology and ________ to survive in the fast-changing society.

A. high sensitivity

B. good judgment

C. good imagination

D. the ability to focus

(34). The author uses the example of Johannes Guttenberg to show that

A. Guttenberg’s invention brought about huge impact to civ ilization.

B. Physical books were once a imagination.

C. Technology may not necessarily destroy our culture.

D. Traditional culture owes a lot to Johannes Guttenberg.

(35). What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.

B. Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.

C. Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.

D. Technology is an opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.

Passage Four

It looked just like another aircraft from the outside. The pilot told his young passengers that it was built in 1964.But appearances were deceptive and the 13 students from Europe and the USA who boarded the aircraft were in for the flight of their lives.

Inside the area that normally had seats had become a long white tunnel. Heavily padded(填塞) from floor to ceiling it looked a bit strange. There were almost no windows, but lights along the padded walls illuminated it. Most of the seats had been taken out apart from a few at the back where the young scientists quickly took their places with a look of fear.

For 12 months, science students from across the continents had competed to win a place on the flight at the invitation of the European Space Agency. the challenge had been to suggest imaginative experiments to be conducted in weightless conditions.

For the next two hours the flight resembled that of an enormous bird which had lose its reason, shooting upwards towards the heavens before rushing towards Earth. The invention was to achieve weightlessness for a few seconds.

The aircraft took off smoothly enough. But any feelings that I and the young scientists had that we were on anything like a scheduled passenger service were quickly dismissed when the pilot put the plane into a 45 degree climb which lasted around 20 seconds. Then the engines cut out and we became weightless. Everything becomes confused and left or right. Up or down no longer had any meaning after ten seconds of free fall descent the pilot pulled the aircraft out of its nosedive. The return of gravity was less immediate than its loss. but was still sudden enough to ensure that some students came down with a bump.

Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless. A new team conduct it experience. First it was the Dutch who wanted to discover how it is that cats always land on their feet. then the German team who conducted a successful experiment on a traditional building method to see if could be used for building a further space station. the Americans had an idea to create solar sails that could be used by satellites.

After two hours of going up and down in the lane doing their experiments, the predominate feeling was one of excitement rather than sickness. Most of the students thought it was an unforgettable experience and one they would be keen to repeat.

(36)、what did the writer say about the plane?.

A. It had no seats.

B. It was painted white.

C. It had no windows.

D. The outside was misleading.

(37). according to the writer, how did the young scientists feel before the flight?

A sick

B keen

C nervous

D impatient

(38). what did the pilot do with the plane after it took off?

A .He quickly climbed and then stopped the engines.

B .He climbed and them made the plane fall slowly.

C .He took off normally and then cut the engines for 20 seconds.

D. He climbed and then made the plane turn over.

(39). According to the passage, the purpose of being weightless was to

A. see what conditions bare like in space

B. prepare the young scientists for future work in space

C. show the judges of the competition what they could do

D. make the teams try out their ideas

(40). this passage was written to

A .encourage young people to take up science

B. describe the process of a scientific competition

C .show scientists what young people can do

D. report on a new scientific technique

Section B

Directions:In this section, you are required to read one quoted blog and the comments on it.The blog and comments are followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A,B,C and D.Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the answer sheet. Excerpt 1

The climate of Earth is changing. Climatologists are confident that over the past century, the global average surface temperature has increased by about half a degree Celsius. This warming is thought to be at least partly the result of human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of forests for agriculture. As the global population grows and national economies expand, the global average temperature is expected to continue increasing by an additional 1.0℃to 3.5℃by the year 2100.

Excerpt 2

Global warming may or not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but-regardless of weather it is or isn't-we won't do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.

Excerpt

Since the early eighties we have been only too aware of the devastating effects of large-scale environmental pollution. Such pollution is generally the result of poor government planning in many developing nations or the short-sighted, selfish policies of the already industrialized countries which encourage a minority of the world's population to squander the majority of its natural resources.

Excerpt 4

Even if we were to magically stop all greenhouse-gas emissions tomorrow the impact on global climate would continue for decades. Delay will simply make the problem worse. The fact is that some of us are doing quite well the way things are. In the developed world prosperity has been built on 150 years of cheap fossil fuels. Material progress has been linked to energy consumption. Today 75 percent of all the world's energy is consumed by a quarter of the world's population. The average rich world resident adds about 3. 2 tons of CO2 yearly to the atmosphere, more than four times the level added by each Third World citizen. The US, with just 7 percent of the global population, is responsible for 22 percent of global warming.

Excerpt 5

One group, led by Gerald Meel at NCAR, used two state-of-the-art climate models to explore what could happen if the world had held atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases steady since 2000. The results: Even if the world had slammed on the brakes five years ago, global average temperatures would rise by about l degree Fahrenheit by the end of the 21st century. Sea levels would rise by another 4 inches over 20th-century increases.

Excerpt 6

We must, however, find a solution to the threat of global warming early in the 21st century. Such a commitment would require a degree of shared vision and common responsibilities new to humanity. Success lies in the force of imagination, in imagining what would happen if we fail to act. Although many living in cold regions would welcome the global-warming effect of a warmer summer, few would cheer the arrival of the subsequent tropical diseases, especially where there had been none.

(41). Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason for the global warming?

A. The burning of fuels such as coal or oil.

B. The clearing of forests.

C. The cultivation of farmland.

D. The negative consequences of human activities.

(42). What is said about global warming in Excerpt 2?

A. It may not prove an environmental crisis at all.

B. It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments,

C. Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop ;it.

D. Very little will be done to bring it under control.

(43). In Excerpt 3, the writer argues that pollution ______.

A. has increase since the eighties

B. is at its worst in industrialized countries

C. results from poor relation between nations

D. is caused by human self-interest

(44). It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. the developing world has decided to increase its energy consumption

B. a third-world citizen adds less than a ton of C02 yearly to the atmosphere

C. the world climate would soon gain its balance if we stopped greenhouse-gas emissions

D. future prosperity of the world is dependent on cheap fossil fuels

(45). What should all countries do to help solve the problem of global warming?

A. They should replace all the harmful substances.

B. They should willingly undertake legal commitments about their energy uses.

C. They should hold another world conference on climate change.

D. They should provide advanced technology.

Part VI Translation(20 minutes,10 points)

Directions:Translate the following passage into Chinese.Write your answer on the Answer Sheet.

Idioms add color to the language .Master idioms and your speech will be less awkward, less foreign .You’ll also understand more of that you read and hear. Often a student of English tries to translate idioms word-for-word, or literally. If you do this, you can end up asking ,”what could this possibly mean ?” This is why idioms are difficult: they work as groups of words, not as individual words. If you translate each word on its own, you’ll miss the meaning and in many cases end up with nonsense.

Part VII Writing(30 minutes,15 points)

How to Succeed in a Job Interview?

Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview. On the one hand, the interviewer learns about the work experiences, education and the personalities of the candidates, so as to pick out the right person for the company. On the other hand, the interviewee can get to know the job he is going to take up, the salary, the working conditions and so on.

But how can one succeed in it? First of all, the interviewee must pay attention to his or

her appearance. The first impression is always where we start. The interviewee should get dressed properly and neatly. Secondly, good manners are equally important. Don’t be too proud, and neither too timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and his knowledge about the job-related areas. Last but not the least, to be confident is essential. The interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background

Much work is exceedingly tiresome, and an excess of work causes stress and even disease. I think, however, that, provided work is not excessive in amount, even boring work is less harmful than idleness. We sometimes feel a little relief from work; at other times work gives us delight. These feelings arise according to the type of work we are doing and our ability to do that work. Work fills many hours of the day and removes the need to decide what one should do. Nowadays, more and more people are concerned about the problem of environmental protection, for the pollution has brought us so many bad influences.

1】 Still, Jefferson freed Hemings’s children — though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves. Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black solders during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will. Only a decade earlier, such an act would have required legislative approval in Virginia.40. Washington’s decision to free slaves originated from his [A] moral considerations. [B] military experience. [C] financial conditions. [D] political stand. 【解析】文中最后一段的“Washington, ...observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, ...grant his slaves their freedom in his will”明确指出华盛顿给奴隶自由的原因是他们在战争中的勇敢行为,[B]“军事经历”是对其高度地概括。 2】 Genetically speaking, there are advantages to avoiding substantial height. During childbirth, larger babies have more difficulty passing through the birth canal. Moreover, even though humans have been upright for millions of years, our feet and back continue to struggle with bipedal posture and cannot easily withstand repeated strain imposed by oversize limbs. “There are some real cons traints that are set by the genetic architecture of the individual organism,” says anthropologist William 33. On which of the following statements would the author most probably agree? [A] Non-Americans add to the average height of the nation. [B] Human height is conditioned by the upright posture. [C] Americans are the tallest on average in the world. [D] Larger babies tend to become taller in

Part III Reading Comprehension (25 points) Section A Directions: In this section, there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Sometimes a race is not enough. Sometimes a runner just wants to go further. That’s what happened to Dennis Martin and Brooke Curran. Martin, 68, a retired detective form New York City, took up running after his first wife died. Curran, 46, a philanthropist(慈善家)from Alexandria, started running to get out of the house and collect her thoughts. Both she and Martin got good at running but felt the desire to do more. “The more I trained, the better I got,” Curran said,” but I would cross the finish line with no sense of accomplishment.”Eventually , they worked up to running marathons(马拉松)(and longer races) in other countries, on other countries. Now both have achieved a notable -and increasingly less rate- milestone; running the 26.2-mile race on all seven continents. They are part of a phenomenon that has grown out of the running culture in the past two decades, at the intersection of athleticism and leisure: “runcations,”which combine distance running with travel to exotic places. There trips, as expensive as they are physically challenging ,are a growing and competitive market in the travel industry. “In the beginning, running was enough,” said Steen Albrechtsen, a press manager. The classic marathon was the ultimate goal, then came the super marathons, like London and New York. But when 90,000 people a year can take that challenge, it is no longer e xciting and adventurous .Hence, the search for new adventures began.”“No one could ever have imagined that running would become the lifestyle activity that it is today,”said Thom Gilligan, founder and president of Boston-based Marathon Tours and Travel. Gilligan, who has been in business since 1979, is partly responsible for the seven-continent phenomenon. It started with a casual talk to an interviewer about his company offering trips to every continent except Antarctica. And then in 1995, Marathon fours hosted its first Antarctica Marathon on King George Island. Off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula; 160 runners got to the starting line of a dirt-and ice-trail route via a Russian icebreaker through the Drake Passage. 21. At the beginning, Martin took up running just to . A. meet requirements of his job B. win a running race C. join in a philanthropic activity D. get away from his sadness 22. Martin and Curran are mentioned as good examples of . A. winners in the 26.2-mile race on all seven continents B. people who enjoy long running as a lifestyle activity C. running racers satisfied with their own performance

Passage Two According to a study, intellectual activities make people eat more than when just resting. This has shed new light on brain food. This finding might also help explain the obesity epidemic of a society in which people often sit. Researchers split 14 university student volunteers into three groups for a 45-minute session of either relaxing in a sitting position, reading and summarizing a text, or completing a series of memory, attention, and alert tests on the computer. After the sessions, the participants were invited to eat as much as they pleased. Though the study involved a very small number of participants, the results were stark. The students who had done the computer tests downed 253 more calories or 29.4 percent more than the couch potatoes. Those who had summarized a text consumed 203 more calories than the resting group. Blood samples taken before, during, and after revealed that intellectual work cause much bigger fluctuations in glucose (葡萄糖) levels than rest periods, perhaps owing to the stress of thinking. The researchers figure the body reacts to these fluctuations by demanding food to restore glucose-the brain’s fuel. Glucose is converted by the body from carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and is supplied to the brain via the bloodstream. The brain cannot make glucose and so needs a constant supply. Brain cells need twice as much energy as other cells in the body. Without exercise to balance the added intake, however, such “brain food” is probably not smart. Various studies in animals have shown that consuming fewer calories overall leads to sharper brains and longer life, and most researchers agree that the findings apply, in general, to humans. And, of course, eating more can make you fat. “Caloric overcompensation following intell ectual work, combined with the fact that we are less physically active when doing intellectual tasks, could contribute to the obesity epidemic currently observed in industrialized countries,” said lead researcher Jean-Philippe Chaput at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada. “This is a factor that should not be ignored, considering that more and more people hold jobs of an intellectual nature,” the researcher concluded. 37. The passage mainly tells us that . A. consuming fewer calories can lead to sharper brains B. thinking consumed more calories than resting C. resting more can make people fat D. brain cells need more energy than other cells in the body
