As grey as the clouds are now, so were my apprehension about this assignment when it was first handed to me. I am trying my best to pen down my thoughts about this personal reflective journal. It seems as though time has taken a pause as I try to fit my whole life experience into the given word limit. The lessons in first three weeks of the course I had were truly informative, educative and best of all, impressive. The experience was better than what a textbook could offer and it was a real reflective learning process for me as I used to think I knew myself very much but honestly I did not. Topics that were introduced to me were both personal skills - developing self-awareness and managing press, and interpersonal skills - communicating supportively, gaining personal power and building relationships and so forth. The most principal tool was pedagogical approach as stated in the model view, which comprehensively led me to apply its five steps to reflect myself. Week One Looking back to the first week of the course reminds me of the confusion in my undergraduate studies. As a graduate at the subject of automation which is related to computer science and engineering, I was expected to be an engineer in my future career perspective. However, I came to realise that I did not like this at all afterwards though I could perform well in this field. 1. Recount your negative as well as positive experience of learning English. My negative experience of learning English was the time when I prepared for my post-graduate extrance examination. A part of the exam was to remember the author with his works correctly and to describe the protagonists. I was not interested in British and American Literature at that time, so I always mixed up works and protagonists and made them in a mess. Because this part was the easiest to get higher score of the whole exam, I spent much time on it. Unfortunately, maybe because nervous or not well prepared, I didn’t get satisfied score at last. My positive experience is also related to British and American Literature. Luckily, I pass the post-graduate extrance examination. I will study British and American Literature further. Then I realize that I need to arouse my interest in literature. I try to accept it with positive attitude, not for the exam any more. I start from a movie named Pride and Prejudice. I found it is an amazing movie and it’s not boring as I thought before. I’d like to read the Chinese edition and then read the original edition. It seems that I like it gradually. I tried to know the writer and his experiences and the connection between them. Now I want to appreciate the literature works. I realize that interest, attitude and methods of learning are very important for learners. 2. What does English learning mean to mean to you? Firstly, I thought that English learning means everything to me, because I have learned English for nearly 15 years and I will continue to learn. English learning will be a thing through my whole life. But if a say so, it’s really exaggerating. It’s more accurate to say that English learning means a tool to me. I learn English hard just for a higher score in the exam during my school life. Learning English means learning its pronounciation, vocabulary and grammar. Journal September 19th, 2013 Every family has their pets. Some people like raise dogs because of their loyalty and honesty while others prefer cats. In my childhood, my sister used to keep a white cat. We often played with each other. Sometimes, it scratched me when the cat was angry with me. A majority of people think that cats are not so much lovely as dogs. In my view, it is unfair to cats. They haven’t been completely tamed like dogs by human beings, and their behaviors may be self-willed so that people isn’t pleased by proud cats. Cats are kind of solitary animals. They often live alone and be more active in night. Even if you are their master, cats may leave you alone. There are different meanings about cats in different cultures. People in western countries hold the views that cats mean bad luck and misfortune while British people believe that cats will bring good luck especially when a cat run before you.
