My name is Steve. Thanks for joining us today. At first glance, this m onth’s ORGANIZATIONS feature might be mistaken for an environmental lesson. Look in your magazines on page 12 and you’ll see the words ”green care” in the title. In fact, this lesson has nothing to do with taking care of the Earth. Rather, it’s about takin g care of people who are, more often than not, overlooked by society. ”Green care” is about using the things of nature to cultivate healing and personal growth in young people with special needs. Now, please join us as we read about the New Dawn Educare Ce nter where healing powers of nature are at work. ”Green Care” Comes to the New Dawn Educare Center. The healing powers of nature at work. ”Green care” is now available in Taiwan at the New Dawn Educare Center, in Hualien. Since it was founded in 1977, the center has tried to help people affected by intellectual disabilities. New Dawn has now included ”green care” in its programs to do a better job of that. ”Green care” therapy uses nature in various ways to help people. V egetable gardening and flower arranging are two examples of the center’s ”green care” services. Licensed therapists are in charge of all of these activities. Welcome, everyone. We are so glad you can join us today. My name is Ryan. And my name is Linda. And today we’re going to talk about an organization in Hualien. And our article is about ”green care” coming to the New Dawn Educare Center there in Hualien. And we’re going to talk about the healing powers of nature at work. So we’re going to talk about the power of nature and how it works in people’s lives to help them become better. That’s right. We’re going get the chance to look at this organization and how they’re helping people with green care. And when we’re talking about ”green care,” we’re going to be looking a little bit ... at plants and how they’re using plants to help people. Well, ”green care” is now available in Taiwan at the New Dawn Educare Center in Hualien. Right. And in Chinese we say the (Chinese), and it’s located in Hualien. And it was founded in 1977, actually, by a Canadian missionary Otto Dirks. He founded the center back then; I think it started out in a kindergarten in Hualien. And it started out to help children, and now it’s grown and expanded to help other people. We’re going to look at how plants, especially in th is organization, they’re bringing in plants and farming to help people. Yeah, we’re going to be looking at how they helped people, and it’s interesting to learn a little bit about how this company was founded. Or if something is founded, that is how it is started. So it’s interesting to see how it was started and now how it has grown to be able to help these people. The center has tried to help people affected by intellectual disabilities. Right. And if we look at the word ”intellectual” here, it has to do with your mind, and how you learn and how you think and how you process information so that you can build on your knowledge to learn and use that in your work and later in life and throughout your life. But intellectual and their disabilities... so what is a ”disability,” Ryan? Well, a ”disability” is an illness or an injury that may prevent someone or keep someone from being able to do something that other people are able to do. So if you look at the word ”disabilities,” you’ll see that there is the prefix”dis-” and then the word ”abilities.” So you see ”abilities” is something people are able to do, and then ”dis-” means they are not able to do those things. So if people have intellectual disabilities, Linda, that means that they are not able to do things in their mind that other people are able to do. Right. So maybe it takes longer for that person to learn something or they don’t have the ability to really learn it correctly, so they’re limited in their ability.
