Edie waits day after day at the mailbox for Chris’s letter…

After Chris’s leaving, Alice blames Edie for her affair with Chris, and always pick her faults. Whenever this time, Mrs.Peebles would come up and mediate the dispute.

Edie cultivate the habit of checking mailbox every day. At first, Chris writes to Edie frequently. However, it ends suddenly. Edie waits for a whole month, but there is still no any reply. Edie is so sad that she wants to find a quiet place to have a cry. For she thinks Chris must have already fallen in love with another girl. After all, she is just a common female worker in an ordinary farm while he is a handsome and sweet-talking pilot.

Later, the old postman in the town retires, there comes a new postman. He is young, tough, sweet-talking but disfigured, and has a long scar on his left arm. Sometimes the arm is too weak to hold a mail. All in all, the impression he leaves is not so bad.

One day, Edie receives a letter of apology from Alice. In the letter, she recalls the time spent with Chris in detail. The last sentence is: if only we could live in the past forever. Then, she leaves the town. Edie feels so strange.

Edie keeps the habit of checking mailbox every day. But Chris never write back. Every time she feels depressed, the young postman would take her to the forest, to the rivers, to

the mountains. Out of curiosity, Edie asks the postman for his experience. His name is Eric Mengsk, he used to be a soldier, and took part in many battles. He got his scar in a close combat. Since the war is over, he finds this idle job. Mengsk is so talkative that they never stop talking and laughing.

Several years past, Edie is old enough to get married. But the mailbox is still empty. The desperate Edie chooses Mengsk as her husband. The couple lead a simply but happy life from then on. Although sometimes, Edie would recall the moment when she first met Chris, Mengsk has been an indispensable part in her life.

After 50 years, Mengsk dies. Edie puts away the certificates he left. Every certificate writes Eric Mengsk.
