第三部分:阅读理解(Part HI Reading Comprehension本大题共20小题,每小题1.5分, 共30分)

第一节:短文理解,考生可根据文章内容从每题四个选择项中选出最佳答案。

Passage one

The factors that add up to a happy life for most people are not what we typically hear about. Things like earning a masters'egree dont make people happy over an exte nded period of time. Rather, the key to happ in ess, and the differe nee betwee n happy and un happy America ns, is a life that reflects values and practices like, hard work, marriage, charity, and freedom.

Work

When more tha n 1,000 people across the country were asked in 2002, "If you were to get eno ugh money to live comfortably for the rest of your life, would you stop work in g?" fewer tha n a third of the America ns an swered yes.

Con trary to widely held opinion, most America ns like or eve n love their work. I n 2002 an amaz ing 89 perce nt of workers said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their jobs. This isn't true just for those with high-pay ing, highly skilled jobs but for all workers across the coun try. And the perce ntage is almost exactly the same among those with and without college degrees and among those work ing for private compa ni es, non profit orga ni zatio ns, and the gover nment.

For most America ns, job satisfact ion is n early equivale nt to life satisfact ion. Among those people who say they are very happy in their lives, 95 percent are also satisfied with their jobs. Furthermore, job satisfact ion would seem to be caus ing overall happ in ess, not the other way around.

Marriage & Family

In 2004, 42 perce nt of married America ns said they were very happy. Just 23 perce nt of n ever-married people said this. Overall, married people were six times more likely lo say that they were very happy tha n to report that they were not too happy. And gen erally speak ing, married wome n say they're happy more ofte n tha n married men.

Marriage isn t just associated with happ in ess --it brings happ in ess, at least for a lot of us. One 2003 study that followed 24,000 people for more tha n a decade docume nted a sig nifica nt in crease in happ in ess after people married. For some, the happ in ess in crease wore off in a few years, and they en ded up back at their premarriage happ in ess levels. But for others, it lasted as long as a lifetime.

What about hav ing kids? While childre n, on their own, don't appear to raise the happ in ess level (they actually tend to slightly lower the happ in ess of a marriage), studies suggest that childre n arc almost always part of an overall lifestyle of happ in ess, which is likely to in clude such things as marriage and religi on.

Charity

We've all heard that money does n't buy happ in ess, and tKats certa inly true. B uhere is one way to get it: Give money away.

The evide nee is clear that gifts to charitable orga ni zati ons and other worthy causes bring substa ntial life satisfact ion to the givers. If you want $50 in authe ntic happ in ess today Just don ate it to a favorite charity.

People who give money to charity are 43 perce nt more likely tha n non givers to say they're very happy. Voiun teers are 42 perce nt more likely to be very happy tha n nonvolun teers. It doestn matter whether the gifts of money go to churches or con certs; religious giving and un religious giving leave people equally happy, and far happier tha n people who don't give. Eve n don ati ng blood, an especially pers onal kind of givin g, improves our attitude. Fun dame ntally, the more people give, the happier they get.

Freedom

In fact, freedom and happ in ess are in timately related: People who con sider themselves free

are a lot happier than those who don't. In 2000 the General Social Survey revealed that people who pers on ally feel "completely free" or "very free were twice as likely as those who don't to say

they re very happy about their lives.

Not all types of freedom are the same in terms of happ in ess, however. Researchers have show n that econo mic freedom brings happ in ess, as does political and religious freedom. On the other hand, moral freedom ----a lack of constraints on behavior ----does not. People who feel they have unlimited moral choices in their lives when it comes to matters of sex or drugs, for example, tend to be un happier tha n those who do not feel they have so many choices in life.

Lessons for America

The data tell us that what matters most for happ in ess is not hav ing a lot of things but havi ng healthy values. Without these values our jobs and our economy will bring us joyless riches. The facts can help rem ind us of what we should be pay ing atte nti on to, as in dividuals and as families, if we want to be happy. Our happ in ess is simply too importa nt to us -- and to America -- to do anything less.

Passage two

Readi ng is thought to be a kind of con versati on betwee n the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gels answers. In the light of these he puts further questi ons, and so on.

For most of the time this conversa¥ion g”es on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually whe n we arc running in to difficulties, whe n mismatch is occurri ng betwee n expectati ons and meaning. Whe n successful match ing is being experieneed, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Differe nt people conv erse with the text differe ntly. Some stay very close to the words on the page, others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represe nts higher levels of comprehe nsion. The bala nee betwee n these is importa nt, especially for adva need readers.

There is ano ther conv ersati on which from our point of view is equally importa nt, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read We callthis a pro“ess ” conversationcqnposed to a “ contetn conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in read in g. If we are an adva need reader our ability to hold a process conv ersati on with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a content conversation. It is precisely this kind of

conv ersati on that is of importa nee whe n we are seek ing to develop our read ing to meet the new dema nds being placed upon us by study ing at a higher level.

Passage three

The poverty line is the lowest in come that people n eed for an acceptable sta ndard of liv ing. People with in come below the poverty line are con sidered poor. Econo mists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem.

About ten percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable sta ndard of liv ing. Econo mists suggest several reas ons why poor people do not have jobs.

For one thing, more than half of the people in the United States are not qualified to work.

Over 40 perce nt of the poor people are childre n. By law, childre n less tha n 16 years old cannot work in many in dustries. And a large nu mber of poor people are old. Many compa nies do not hire people over 65 years old.

Some poor adults do no t look for jobs for a variety of pers onal reas ons: they are sick, they have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job. Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer.

At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways.

First, if the n ati onal economy grows, compa nies hire more workers. Some of the poor may find a job, and they will no Ion ger be below the poverty line.

Secon d, if the gover nment spe nds money on social programs, educati on and training for the poor people, the poor will have the skill to offer. Then it is more likely that they can find jobs.

Fi nally, if the gover nment distributes society's in come differe ntly, it raises some poor people above the poverty line. The gover nment collects taxes from the non "poor and gives money to the
