SDUT Facts

Shandong University of Technology dates its founding to 1956. Situated in Zibo, one of China’s most historic cities and the cradle of the ancient Qi Culture, the University is distinctive for its science and engineering with the prioritized support from Shandong Province. As one of the National Pilot Zones for Innovative Talents Training Mode program, SDUT is among the first group of pilot schools for "A Plan for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers" of national level and one of the pilot universities for the College English Teaching Reform in China. The University also serves as one of the training institutes for the National College Students Know About Business (KAB) Entrepreneurship Program and one of pilot schools for the National Information-based Education Program. Now SDUT has been entitled as “the Distinctive University in Training Applied Talents” by Shandong Province.

SDUT has 21 schools, the post-doctoral research station of mechanical engineering, 3 authorized disciplines to grant the doctoral degree which covers 13 sub-disciplines for the doctoral degree. In addition, the University has 21 authorized disciplines to grant master’s degree which covers 98 sub-disciplines for master’s degree. As for the professional degrees, SDUT has 14 sub jects for master’s degree in engineering, 5 for master’s degree in agricultural extension, as well as the subjects for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Finance (MF). The undergraduate programs cover 9 categories, namely, engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, history, pedagogy and art, thus resulting in a balanced layout focused on engineering and ensuring coordinated development of all the disciplines. The University has a total enrollment of over 32,200 full-time undergraduate, and 2,600 postgraduate students.

The University has abundant educational resources and well-equipped facilities. Sticking to the principle of “high starting point, superb quality and good taste", and in accordance with the construction objectives of being "ecological, garden-like, digital and humanized", the University has put in great investment to seek continuous improvement of the education conditions. The University covers an area of 240 hectares or 3,600 mu. The quiet surroundings, flourishing trees and flowers and the green carpet of grass create pleasant scenery, presenting the beauty of harmony between human and nature. With a floor space of 1.05 million square meters, the University has a total sports area of 164, 000 square meters, 268 multi-media lecture halls and well-equipped teaching facilities for physical education. The library contains a collection of 6.11 million volumes of books (of which 3.05 million volumes are electronic) and 24,000 types of journals in both Chinese and foreign languages (including electrical journals). The total value of instruments and equipment for teaching and research reaches 393 million yuan or 61.89 million US dollars. There are 21 laboratories co-built by the central and the local governments, 4 national engineering practice centers, 1 national model center for experiment teaching, 1 national virtual simulation experiment teaching center, 2

Shandong provincial model centers for experiment teaching and 13 Shandong provincial experiment teaching centers for key disciplines. SDUT also is one of the national key training institutes for the vocational faculty. The advanced campus network links the whole campus and there are public service platforms such as the Education Technology Center and the Center for Analysis and Test.

In conformity with the faculty building guideline of "gathering talents, cultivating teams and producing masters", the University makes simultaneous efforts to attract high-quality talents and train its own faculty to form a devoted team with a reasonable personnel structure. Among 1,924 members of the faculty, there are 236 professors and 653 associate professors. 525 faculty members have doctorate degrees.

16 hold the honor of State Young and Middle-aged Experts of Outstanding Contributions, or candidates of the National New Century 100, 1,000 and 10,000 Talents Project or recipients of the State Council Special Allowance. Now 34 professors are respectively granted with the title of "Mount Tai Scholar" (Overseas) Distinguished Professor, Young and Middle-Aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Shandong Province, or Teaching Masters of Shandong Province. 45 faculty members are doctoral tutors. Also, the University has recruited 5 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering as well as some adjunct professors.

With teaching always playing a pivotal role among all work, SDUT advocates the teaching spirit of "serving as role models and teaching with tireless zeal" and the learning spirit of "excelling in both morality and career and learning without satiety". While strengthening the credit reform, the University has established a three-in-one talent training system stressing "knowledge, capability and quality" to ensure the training of high-level professionals with a solid foundation, excellent competence, high quality and innovative spirits. Comprehensive teaching reform has also been undertaken and the building of disciplines, courses and teaching teams have been enhanced. Since 2003, the University has been awarded 27 teaching achievement prizes of provincial or above level, among which 2 are second prizes of national level.

2 teams are entitled as the national level teaching teams and 7 as provincial level teaching teams. 5 disciplines are selected as the national level programs with special features, and 14 as provincial level brand-name programs or provincial level programs with special features. 5 courses are awarded the national level quality courses while 1 course is a national level bilingual model course and 52 courses are provincial level quality courses. 30 textbooks are listed as planned ones. By implementing the research and innovation training plan for college students, SDUT has improved the practical and innovative abilities of the students. This has led to the winning of almost 4,300 prizes in various kinds of important events, such as the "Challenge Cup" Contest for the National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science &Technology Works, the National Contest of Mathematics Models, etc. Of them, 82 are international awards, 19 national grand awards and 244 national first prizes. Thanks to the fairly high employment rate and quality, the University

has been entitled the Outstanding Organization for General University Graduates Employment in Shandong Province. Postgraduate education innovation has been strengthened to cultivate the postgraduates' innovative ability. With 15 co-built training institutes, the University has been entitled the Outstanding Organization for Postgraduate Education Management and Discipline Development in Shandong Province.

Adhering to the scientific research guideline of "more academic achievements, more talents and more benefits", the University has integrated its scientific research force, established academic teams, set the main directions to actively serve the local economic and social development. Now, the University has 1 national engineering research center and 1 engineering research center co-built by the state and local governments. Shandong Research Institute of Engineering and Technology is headquartered in the University. SDUT has 14 provincial research centers of engineering and technology, 12 key provincial disciplines, 6 key provincial laboratories and 4 provincial research institutes of humanities and social science. SDUT actively cooperates with enterprises and research institutes to integrate production, teaching and research, thus strengthening the manufacturing industry of Shandong Province. The University has jointly set up over 100 research and development entities with enterprises and research institutes and became one of the major scientific research and technological innovation institutes in Shandong Province. Since 2003, the University has taken up 1,300 research projects of various types, among which more than 260 are part of the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), the National Key Technology Research and Development Program , the National Natural Science Foundation or the National Social Science Foundation. SDUT has won about 144 scientific research awards of provincial or above levels, among which 2 are second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention in 2006 and 2007, and 5 are second prizes of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

SDUT is open to the world, stressing the international exchange and cooperation. It has established friendship and cooperation with over 50 institutions of higher education in the USA, UK, ROK, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, etc. And the substantial progress has been made. The University explores the channels of cooperation with overseas partners to push forward the process of internationalization and has initiated 6 joint education programs with institutions of several countries. SDUT vigorously develops international education and more than 3,300 international students have received education in the University. SDUT greatly encourages mutual scholar visits, academic exchanges, attaching much importance to the recruitment of overseas talents. After recruiting the high-level foreign experts and scholars as professors or lecturers, the University has enhanced its quality of talent training.

Facing new development and opportunities of higher education and upholding the school motto “Integrity, Learning, Commitment, and Perfection”, SDUT takes talent training as a fundamental task, keeping discipline development as the first priority, improvement of quality as the core task, scientific research as the key point and the team building as the focal point. 山东理工大学创建于1956年,坐落在历史悠久的齐文化发祥地——山东省淄博市,是山东省重点建设的理工科大学。学校现为国家人才培养模式创新实验区、首批国家级“卓越工程师教育培养计划”试点单位、全国大学外语教学改革试点单位、全国大学生KAB创业教育基地、全国教育信息化试点单位,山东省“应用型人才培养特色名校”立项建设单位。

学校现设有22个学院,设有机械工程博士后科研流动站,具有3个博士学位授权一级学科,13个博士学位授权二级学科,21个硕士学位授权一级学科,98个硕士学位授权二级学科,专业学位包含14个工程硕士招生领域,5个农业推广硕士招生领域,拥有工商管理硕士(MBA)、金融硕士(MF)专业学位授予权,有74个本科招生专业,学科专业涵盖了工学、理学、经济学、管理学、文学、法学、历史学、教育学、艺术学等9个学科门类,已逐步形成以工为主、多学科协调发展的学科专业布局。目前,有全日制本科在校生32200多人,在学研究生2500多人。

学校办学实力雄厚、办学设施齐全。学校坚持“高起点、高质量、高品位”的原则,按照“生态化、园林化、数字化、人文化”的建设目标,加大投入,不断改善办学条件。学校校园占地3600亩,校内环境幽雅,花木繁茂,碧草如茵,景色宜人,处处呈现出人与自然的和谐之美;校舍建筑面积105.47万平方米,网络多媒体教室268个,运动场面积16.4万平方米,体育教学设施齐全。图书馆藏书312万册,电子图书322万种,中外文期刊24000余种(含电子期刊)。教学科研仪器设备总值3.89亿元。中央与地方共建实验室21个,国家级工程实践教育中心4个、国家级实验教学示范中心1个、国家级虚拟仿真实验教学中心1个、省实验教学示范中心2个、省骨干学科教学实验中心13个,设有全国重点职教师资培训基地。先进的校园网络覆盖全校,并设有教育技术中心、分析测试中心等公共服务平台。

学校按照“汇聚人才、培育团队、成就大师”的师资队伍建设方针,坚持引进与培养并举,着力打造结构合理、爱岗敬业的高水平人才队伍。学校现有1920名专任教师,其中教授239人、副教授726人,具有博士学位的569人,国家有突出贡献中青年专家、新世纪百千万人才工程国家级人选、享受国务院特殊津贴等各类人选17人,山东省“泰山学者”(海外)特聘教授、省有突出贡献中青年专家、省级教学名师等各类人选39人,博士生导师50人。另聘有中国科学院、中国工程院院士5人及一批校外兼职教授。

学校始终坚持教学工作中心地位,大力倡导“为人师表、诲人不倦”的教风和“德业双修、学而不厌”的学风。深化学分制改革,构建了“知识、能力、素质”三位一体人才培养体系,着力培养基础厚、能力强、素质高、具有创新精神的应用型高级专门人才。全面推进教育教学改革,加强专业、课程和教学团队建设,“十一五”以来,学校获得省

级教学成果奖27项,获国家级教学成果二等奖2项;入选国家级教学团队2个,省级教学团队7个;国家级特色专业5个,省级特色专业14个;国家级精品课程5门,国家级精品资源共享课3门,国家级双语示范课程1门,省级精品课程52门;规划教材30部。深入实施大学生研究与创新训练计划,学生实践和创新能力得到提高,“十一五”以来,在“挑战杯”全国大学生课外学术科技作品竞赛、全国数学建模大赛等重大赛事中获省部级以上奖励5470余项,其中,国际奖励113项、国家特等奖21项、国家一等奖288项。毕业生就业率和就业质量始终保持较高水平,荣获山东省普通高校毕业生就业工作先进集体。强化研究生创新能力培养,拥有省级研究生联合培养基地15个,学校被评为首届山东省研究生教育管理与学科建设先进单位。

学校坚持“出人才、出成果、出效益”的科研工作方针,整合科研力量,组建学术团队,选定主攻方向,积极为区域经济社会发展服务。学校设有1个国家工程技术研究中心和1个国家地方联合工程研究中心,山东工程技术研究院设在我校,有15个省级工程技术研究中心、6个省级重点实验室、11个省级重点学科、4个省级人文社科研究基地。学校注重“产学研”结合,积极参与山东制造业强省建设,与企业、科研院所联合设立了100余个科技研发机构,成为山东省重要的科学研究和技术创新基地。“十一五”以来,学校先后承担省部级以上课题1400余项,其中国家“863”计划、国家“973”计划、国家科技支撑计划、国家自然科学基金、国家社会科学基金等各类国家级项目290余项;荣获省部级以上科研奖励160项,其中2006年、2007年各获得国家技术发明二等奖1项,2008年、2009年、2011年、2012年、2013年、2015年各获得国家科技进步二等奖1项。

学校坚持开放办学,加强国际交流与合作,已与美、英、韩、俄、澳、新等国家的60余所高校建立友好合作关系,开展实质性交流。探索与国外学校合作办学的渠道,推进办学国际化进程,与多个国家的有关高校开展了6个中外合作办学项目。大力发展留学生教育,是中国政府奖学金来华留学生培养资格院校,已培养留学生3500余人。大力开展学者互访、学术交流,重视引进国外智力工作,聘请高层次的国外专家、学者来校任教和讲学,提高人才培养质量。

Faculty

Shandong University of Technology regards the building of a high-quality faculty as the foundation for its development, firmly establish ing the idea that “Human resource ranks No. 1 among all resources”, so the University makes talents in career, gathers talents with culture, and motivates talents by systems. According to the faculty building principle of “gathering talents, cultivating te ams and producing masters”, the University lays equal stress on cultivating and introducing scholars, improving degrees and capabilities, as well as enhancing ethics, teaching and research in faculty building. With the systematic and step-by-step plan, various relevant programs are carried out, including teachers’ degree advancing program,

excellent visiting scholars program, overseas talents introduction program, and young teachers’ development program.

The University now hosts many influential scholars and academic leaders at home and abroad who contribute to a faculty of high educational level, good discipline structure, strong teaching and research capability and reasonable age structure with the dedicated innovation spirit. Natural Science Research

Adhering to the scientific research guideline of "more academic achievements, more talents and more benefits", the University actively conducts scientific research and technological development and has a solid research foundation in machinery, vehicle engineering, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering, material engineering, chemical engineering, life sciences and other fields. In the University, there are 2 national research institutions (the National Research Center of Engineering Technology for Industrial Ceramics, and the Research Center of Preparation Technology on Engineering Ceramics which is co-built by the state and local governments), and 9 provincial key disciplines (mechanical electronic engineering, vehicle engineering, power electronics and power transmission, agricultural machinery engineering, mechanical design & theory, applied chemistry, traffic information engineering and control , biochemistry & molecular biology, applied mathematics). SDUT has 2 provincial key laboratories (precision mold & special material processing laboratory, dry farming machinery and information laboratory), 4 provincial university key laboratories (precision mold, structure analysis & dynamics, advanced composite materials, and precision engineering survey) , and 14 provincial engineering technology research centers (clean energy, ceramics matrix composites, biology information, textile chemistry & dyeing & finishing, digital design & manufacturing, vehicle engineering, high-voltage power grid transient protection, road intelligent control & safe transportation, mine tailings resource

disposal, optical fiber communication detection, basic geospatial information, modern metal forming, distributed power integration, and sports training apparatus).

Since 2003, the University has witnessed its rapid progress in scientific research, featuring the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), the sub-program of the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), and over 20 science supporting projects, such as “Biomass Pyrolysis Technology for Liquids Production”, “Product Reverse Desi gn and Manufacture System Based on the Triangular Surface Modeling Technology”, “Hollow Fiber Ceramic Membrane Air Separation Oxygen Generation System”, “Corn Harvest Mechanization Technology Research and Demonstration”, “Agricultural Products Cold Extrusi on Processing, Mechanical Equipment and its Application Achievements”. The University has also undertaken more than 200 programs supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 600 provincial or ministerial programs. SDUT takes an active role in cooperating with local governments, institutions and enterprises to solve lots of technological problems and serve local economic development. The University has won 2 second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention and 5 second prizes of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, as well as more than 500 prizes of other levels.

Social Science Studies

Adhering to the scientific research guideline of "more academic achievements, more talents and more benefits", SDUT actively conducts social science research and consulting services. SDUT has strong fundamental and applied research capability on the subjects of Qi Culture, Industrial Economics, Ecological Culture, Management, Law, Informatics, Sports and Art. There are 2 provincial humanities and social science research institutes (Qi Culture Research Institute and Industrial Economy Research Institute), 1 university humanities and social science research institute authorized by the Education Department of Shandong (Culture Research Institute), 1 provincial soft science research institute (Ecological Culture Research Institute of Shandong Province), 3 provincial culture and arts key disciplines (music, fine arts, and Qi Culture research). At the same time, SDUT has established 17 research centers and research institutes, including Research Institute of Low Carbon Economy and Technology of Shandong Province, to better serve society and improve the regional economy.

In recent years, researches in humanity and social science have developed rapidly; especially in the recent three years, SDUT has taken on 123 provincial and above level tasks including 13 National Social Science Foundation programs and one national soft science program. Faculty members have published over 1,765 papers, among which over 1,100 are on core periodicals, and 26 academic monographs. As

many as 218 social science prizes have been granted to SDUT, among which 19 are provincial or ministerial level

Bachelor Degree Education

The University focuses on teaching consistently, aiming to cultivate high-quality, high-level, and specialized talents, particularly those who are capable of meeting the needs of regions, relevant industries, and the public at the grassroots level and who are innovative in applied fields.It continues its reforms of education and teaching as well as the training modes of innovative talents while setting up and carrying out the three-in-one talents training scheme of “quality, knowledge, and capability”, thus highlighting SDUT’s talent tr aining features.

The University recruits and trains students in 10 disciplines, including mechanics, telecommunication, bio-chemical materials, civil engineering, geology and mining, mathematics and physics, economics and management, literature and law, arts and physical education, and foreign languages. The three-level teaching platform has been set up for four academic years: the platform of liberal arts courses in the first academic year for all disciplines, the platform of discipline-oriented fundamental courses in the second year, and the platform of major-oriented courses in the third and fourth years.

The University has a credit system as follows: The University carries out the flexible educational system lasting from 3 to 6 years;the elective system in which students can select courses of other disciplines or academic years;major-minor, duel majors and duel degrees system in which capable students can select a minor or be granted duel majors certificate with a second major, or a second degree;the tutorial system in which a tutor is arranged to give advice on study, selecting courses, and even the all-round development of students;the open laboratory system in which students reserve laboratories for experiments based on their own time and study progress. The credit system makes autonomous learning possible, arousing students’ enthusiasm in study, giving space for the development of students’ individuality and innovation.

The University launches the experimental classes to cultivate innovative talents. This class mode is introduced from famous universities at home and abroad, featuring brand new training scheme in which students receive the liberal arts education in first three academic years and select their own majors at the end of the third academic year within their disciplines.

The University is one among the first batch of 61 national pilot universities, also the only provincial university in Shandong, for the “Outstanding Engineers Education Program" set by the Ministry of Education. So far, SD UT’s 4 undergraduate courses (mechanical design, manufacturing & automation, computer science & engineering,

mining engineering, fashion design & engineering) and one postgraduate course (computer technology & engineering) entered this program.

SDUT pays much attention to the learning style. Valuing highly teaching and learning, SDUT set up its own construction mentality: students as subject guided by their teacher, oriented by employment while education working as the base. The guideline of improving learning style puts stresses on innovation, and takes quality as lifeline of education. The implementation of “Technology Innovation", “Culture Education", and “Social Practice”, achieved the combination of “the first class” (the school classroom) and “the second class” (the workshop). Thus, SDUT takes the good atmosphere on the fact that "students aspire to become useful man, teachers regard teaching as career, and school takes education as duty”, eventually making the learning style of "cultivating integrity while studying knowledge, learning with a insatiable desire" go into the students' heart, which improves students' quality and ability.

While enhancing the active reform in teaching content, teaching methods and means of instruction, the University manages the teaching strictly, makes continuous improvement of supervision system on teaching quality, pays attention to the personality development of students and their ability of practice and spirit of innovation. As a result, lots of qualified graduates serve the society, winning the widespread praise.

Postgraduate Education

SDUT was approved as the institution granting master's degrees in 1998 and the one granting doctor’s degrees in 2013. After years of development, there are 3 doctorate authorization disciplines, 21 master's degree authorization disciplines, 14 engineering and 5 agricultural extension fields granting master degree. SDUT is authorized to grant a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Master of Finance (MF) full-time professional degree, at the same time. SDUT can accept applications for master degrees on engineering, agricultural extension, vocational school teachers’ on-the-job study and from people with equivalent schooling record. At present, the school has 2,600 postgraduate students.

SDUT now has the tutor team of reasonable structure, high quality, full vitality, sustainable development with 44 doctor tutors, 531 master tutors (including 98 campus ones), 6 of whom won the title of “the Outstanding Postgraduate Student Teac hers in Shandong Province”. The team of high-level tutors has laid a solid foundation for the high-level postgraduate education.

As for the postgraduate education, SDUT insists to constantly strengthen the teaching reform of graduate education as the orientation, to improve graduate training quality as the core task. While implementing the national postgraduate

education teaching reform in the full scale, SDUT highlights the training of postgraduates’ innovative and practical abilities, preliminarily estab lishing the training mode oriented by upgrading innovative ability for academic degree postgraduates, and the training mode oriented by upgrading professional ability for professional degree postgraduates. The quality and competitiveness of the postgraduate have been improved year by year. From 1999 to 2014, SDUT has awarded the master's degree to more than 4,000 people. In the past decade, the teaching quality of postgraduate education has been improved greatly. 21 master's degree dissertations were selected as the outstanding master's degree dissertations in Shandong Province and 8 postgraduate teaching achievements were awarded by Shandong as the outstanding ones, including 1 first prize. SDUT pays attention to postgraduate academic exchanging activities and the projects aiming at science and technology innovation. In recent 5 years, awards of the provincial or above level won by postgraduates amounted to more than 100. Attaching great importance to the cooperation with enterprises, SDUT has established 13 provincial postgraduate training institutes and workstations, as well as 30 university-level postgraduate joint training institutes.

Facing new opportunities and challenges brought by the rapid development of science and technology as well as the transformation and upgrades of the society, SDUT is committed to enhance the postgraduate education by aiming to build “the well-known teaching-research university at home and abroad ", constantly improving the degree and postgraduate education system and training mechanism, and comprehensively improving the quality of postgraduate education and competitiveness. International Education

The inte rnational education is an important part of the SDUT’s strategy of internationalization of education. Since its foundation, adhering to the principle of “enlarging the scale, optimizing the structure, standardizing the management, and assuring quality” put forward by the Ministry of Education, SDUT actively pushes forward the education for international students and has made great development. As the qualified host university to receive international students who win the Chinese Government Scholarship, SDUT is one among the first batch of schools in Shandong Province to receive scholarship winners from abroad. In addition, SDUT is the Internet-based Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) center and the center for the International Chinese Teachers' Professional Qualification Test. In recent years, SDUT has trained over 3,300 international students, in various types, from more than 40 countries. SDUT attaches importance to the international talents training system, optimizing the nationality structure of the international students and improving student training level. The international talents training system has various forms for

Distance & Continuing Education

The adult higher education of SDUT aims to train high-quality workers and specialized staff and to enhance people's quality. Upholding the spirit of providing further education for on-the-job staff and in promoting the economic development of Shandong Province, SDUT has already turned out thousands of specialized talents.

The adult higher education is an important part of the whole education. Based on general education resources, 76 adult education majors with formal schooling record in 8 disciplines (engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, history, pedagogy, and management) have been established. Among the 76 majors, 30 are four-year programs and 46 three-year programs. The forms of schooling include: teaching by correspondence, evening classes, off-job study , and self-study. The levels of schooling include: four or three-year programs for students with high school diplomas, and bachelor degree programs for students with three-year college program diplomas.

In recent years, with the improvement of teaching quality and conditions, the reputation of the University has been enhanced, its scale enlarged and the number of students uplifted. The current student body is 14,000 with 32 correspondence teaching stations located in Shandong Province and throughout China.

In the adult higher education, SDUT attaches great importance to education without formal schooling record and training programs while promoting adult education with formal schooling record. Great achievement has been made in education without formal schooling record such as on-the-job training, certificate training, joint programs, on-the-job postgraduate education, college entrance examination tutoring and computer grade examination training.

Culture Building

SDUT puts great stress on building its campus culture by raising students' self-consciousness, the sense of responsibility and mission in culture building. 应县木塔之名的历史演变 蔡升元 应县佛宫寺释迦塔(简称应县木塔)是当今世界上第一奇塔。而这座奇塔之名的历史演变更让我们对木塔十分敬重,对它的历史文化也有了深刻的意识。 (一) 应县木塔北魏时称“应州崇虚寺木塔”。 北魏太平真君三年(442)至太和十五年(491),这不到五十年的时间里,平城(今山西大同)人口急剧上升,居舍建到了静轮宫的四周,人神混杂,无法清净神道,于是孝文帝就于太和十五年(491)将静轮宫移到了“桑干之阴”的应州,改名“崇虚寺”。《魏书》有证:“八月戊戌,移道坛于桑干之阴,改曰崇虚寺。”(《魏书·高祖纪》168页)《资治通鉴二》第137卷767页也有同样的记载。 (二) 应县木塔唐代称“应州宝宫寺木塔”。 唐玄宗天宝元年(742)十分崇道,为了提高其地位,便把皇家敕建的道观升格为“宫”。这样一来,“崇虚寺”这个北魏孝文帝敕建的道观就更名为“宝宫寺”了。也有人讲,因崇虚寺内藏珍宝而改名。《山西通志》记载:“兴光元年秋,敕有司马为太祖以下五帝铸释迦像,各长一丈六尺,用赤金二万五千斤。”(《山西通志》第57卷4129页) 宋雍熙三年(986),著名画师冯清云游应州,写下了《登应州宝

释迦塔 释迦塔全称佛宫寺释迦塔位于山西省朔州市应县城西北佛宫寺内,俗称应县木塔。建于辽清宁二年(宋至和三年公元1056年),金明昌六年(南宋庆元一年公元1195年)增修完毕,是中国现存最高最古的一座木构塔式建筑,全国重点文物保护单位,国家AAAA级景区。与意大利比萨斜塔、巴黎埃菲尔铁塔并称“世界三大奇塔”。 建筑布局 释迦塔位于寺南北中轴线上的山门与大殿之间,属于“前塔后殿”的布局。塔建造在四米高的台基上,塔高67.31米,底层直径30.27米,呈平面八角形。 第一层立面重檐,以上各层均为单檐,共五层六檐,各层间夹设有暗层,实为九层。因底层为重檐并有回廊,故塔的外观为六层屋檐。各层均用内、外两圈木柱支撑,每层外有24根柱子,内有八根,木柱之间使用了许多斜撑、梁、枋和短柱,组成不同方向的复梁式木架。整个木塔共用红松木料3000立方,约2600多吨重。 该塔身底层南北各开一门,二层以上周设平座栏杆,每层装有木质楼梯,游人逐级攀登,可达顶端。二至五层每层有四门,均设木隔扇。塔内各层均塑佛像。一层为释迦牟尼,高11米。内槽墙壁上画有六幅如来佛像,门洞两侧壁上也绘有金刚、天王、弟子等。二层坛座方形,上塑一佛二菩萨和二胁侍。 塔顶作八角攒尖式,上立铁刹。塔每层檐下装有风铃。 释迦塔的设计,大胆继承了汉、唐以来富有民族特点的重楼形式,充分利用传统建筑技巧,广泛采用斗拱结构,全塔共用斗拱54种,每个斗拱都有一定的组合形式,有的将梁、坊、柱结成一个整体,每层都形成了一个八边形中空结构层。 塔内文物佛牙舍利 塔内供奉着两颗佛牙舍利,盛装在两座七宝供奉的银廓里,经考证确认为是释迦牟尼灵牙遗骨。佛灭度后,共留下七颗佛牙舍利。应县佛宫寺释迦塔发现的两颗佛牙舍利,是南本《大般涅槃经》中记载的捷疾罗刹所隐身盗取的一双佛牙。 莲花台下八力士 木塔底层大门对面有一尊高大的如来像,坐在一个巨大的莲花台上。这个莲花台被八个力士扛着,个个力举千钧,形象生动逼真。这八个力士本是驻守八个方向的护法天神,乘如来古佛外出讲经说法之机,汇聚一处,私下凡尘。他们八个下了凡间,排山倒海。本来天下三山五岳、五湖四海排列得整整齐齐,像棋子一样,所以有“星罗棋布”一说。 历史发展 释迦塔于辽清宁二年(1056年)建成,由辽兴宗的萧皇后倡建,田和尚奉敕募建,至金明昌四年,增修益完。以作家庙,彰显家威,并有礼佛观光和登高料敌之用。
