第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Wouldn’t you want to travel more often without breaking the bank? If you are interested, read on to find out how you can do simple things to save money next time you go on vacation. Airfares

Plan in advance and visit discount websites to see if there are better deals. If you are planning to stay in two countries and an airline makes you change planes on those countries anyway, you might be in luck. Check pricing on the flights to see if you can stay a few days at the country of the flight change instead of changing planes right away since airlines often let you do that for the same price.

Accommodations

Sometimes the smaller towns close to where you are going have hotels that are much less expensive. If you don’t mind the 15-minute ride, you might just save a large amount of money. Home exchanges are pretty cool and popular especially in Europe. If you are of the adventure type, this could be exciting and refreshing. Sometimes smaller hotel chains are willing to give you free upgrades or even free nights. If you are staying at a destination for at least a few days, consider a vacation home instead of hotels. They are often more comfortable and your cost will probably be cheaper.

Eating

Figure out where you will be and eat before you actually go out. Avoid breakfast from the hotels because chances are good that the breakfast from the hotel is expensive and isn’t great. It probably pays to walk out the front door in the morning and find a local cafe. You might just

discover the local favorite unexpectedly. Want a breakfast that costs nothing? Ask for some bread to-go at the restaurant the night before. In addition, fancy lunches are often much less expensive than dinners. If you eat a big lunch and a light dinner, it’s also healthier.

21. What kind of travelers will choose a vocation home?

A. Those who dislike small hotel chains.

B. Those who want an adventure trip.

C. Those who plan to live longer in one place.

D. Those who don’t mind long-distance trips.

22. What does “that” refer to in Paragraph 2?.

A. pricing on the flight.

B. staying a few days at the country of the flight change.

C. staying in two countries.

D. changing planes right away.

23. The text is mainly about ______.

A. trips in different countries

B. tips on economical travel

C. tips for a package holiday

D. dos and don’ts during a trip

B

Fourth-grader Jaden Darnell has an Xbox 360 and a PlayStation 3. Like many other kids, he also plays games on his phone. At times, he says, it can be hard to tear himself away from a device (设备), especially when he’s playing NBA General Manager.

What makes some video games so attractive? Raph Koster, an expert on game design, says game makers employ a great deal of knowledge about what keeps people playing. He says that whether they know it or not, players like getting feedback (反馈) that they can see or hear. The game Peggle, for example, plays the song “Ode to Joy” every time you succeed at beating a level. “It gives you this amazing amount of celebration,” says Koster.

Game makers also know that once players have put in the time and effort to achieve a goal, they don’t like to give up. So some games are easy at first and become more challenging (挑战性的). At that point, the players may be offered a resource (资源) that makes winning easier. “The game creates a problem that it offers to solve for you in exchange for cash,” explains Ian Bogost, a professor who studies video games at the Georgia Institute of Technology. When players are connected to the Internet, developers can observe what they do. By recording players’ choices, game companies can find out what keeps people interested in and what makes them most likely to buy things.

Besides game developers, scientists are also paying attention to the power of games. Adam Gazzaley, a scientist at the University of California, has developed games that improve attention and memory in older adults. Now Gazzaley and his team are designing brain-building games for kids. “We think that how video games really pull you in and demand your attention can be used to help improve how the brain process (处理) information,” he says. To test the games’ effects on the mind, Gazzaley records brain activity while people play. He says that one day doctors might advise patients to play video games to improve their intelligence.

24.It’s difficult for Jaden Darnell to ______.

A.play NBA General Manager B.play with other kids

C.turn his attention to new games D.stop playing games

25.Why do game makers create games that are easy at first and then become more challenging?

A.To attract more players.

B.To make more money.

C.To offer a resource that makes winning easier.

D.To challenge players.

26.What’s Adam Gazzaley’s attitude towards the future of video games?

A.Worried. B.Doubtful. C.Promising. D.Uninterested. 27.What would be the best title for the text?

A.More than a game? B.The future of video games

C.It is game time! D.Say no to video games

C

I LOVE FOOTBALL. I started playing when I was nine years old, and football got me through. It helped make me who I am today. And even though I did not reach the National Football League, I sometimes think I got more from pursuing(追逐) that dream, and not realizing it.

My romance with football started when my dad dragged me, kicking and screaming, to join a league. I had no desire to be there. I was naturally weak and the smallest kid by far. Fear turned to awe(敬畏) when I met my coach, Jim Graham, a huge, six-foot-four wall-of-a-guy. And he is really strict and old-school.

Coach Graham used to ride me hard. I remember one practice in particular. “You’re doing it all wrong, Pausch. Go ba ck! Do it again!” I tried to do what he wanted. It wasn’t enough. “You owe me, Pausch! You’re doing push-ups after practice.”

When I was finally dismissed(解散), one of the assistant coaches came up to me. “Coach Graham rode you pretty hard, didn’t he?” he s aid.

“Yeah.”

“That’s a good thing,” the assistant told me. “When you’re doing bad and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.”

That conversation has stuck with me my whole life. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s willing to tell you anymore, that’s a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but your critics(批评者) are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you, and want to make you better.

There’s a lot of talk these days abou t giving children self-esteem(自尊). It’s not something you can give; it’s something they have to build. Coach Graham knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to develop it: You give them something they can’t do, they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating the process.

When Coach Graham first got hold of me, I was this weak kid with no skills and no physical strength. But he made me realize that if I work hard enough, there will be things I can do tomorrow that I ca n’t do today. Even now, having just turned forty-seven, I can give you a three-point stance that any NFL lineman would be proud of. I really felt grateful to Coach Graham for what he had done to me, though it surely did feel good at that time to do so many push-ups after practice.

28. Which words can best describe Coach Graham?

A. Strict and mean.

B. Big and proud.

C. Strict and wise.

D. Careful and strong.

29. The author believes that those who criticize you actually ______.

A. make fun of you

B. give you up

C. think ill of you

D. encourage you to do better

30. The author was grateful to Graham because the coach ______.

A. made him a member of NFL

B. made him do lots of push-ups

C. taught him the value of hard work

D. taught him the importance of playing football

31. What lesson can we learn from this passage?

A. No pains, no gains.

B. Never offer to teach fish to swim.

C. Behind bad luck comes good luck.

D. Action speaks louder than words.

D

A new study says people who feel they lack social power find it harder to perform physical work. The researchers say their study is the first to show that people who believe they lack influence in society feel the weight of the world.

Eun Hee Lee, a researcher in the group, says the people in the study were not suffering from the continuing deep sadness known as clinical depression. Instead, Ms. Lee said, the study was based on how the participants saw themselves. They rated themselves on what level they thought they held in the social order. They compared themselves with people they thought of as powerful and in control. She described what the study team meant by “powerful.”

“We defined being powerful as the one who has control over their own and others’ resources; whereas being powerless as being the ones who don’t have their control over theirs and others’ resources, and also have to be dependent to gain the resources that they need.” She said powerless people continually feel unsure.

Researchers in the study examined participants to learn their feelings about their status or level in society. They presented them with a statement such as, “I can get people to listen to what I say.“The participants were asked to lift a number o f boxes and guess their weight. The more powerless the people, the higher they estimated the weight of the containers.

In a second test the researchers asked participants to sit in ways that seemed powerful. In one example they sat with one elbow on the arm of a chair. That position is dominating, or commanding. Or, they sat with their hands under their thighs(大腿), a restrictive position. People in the restrictive positions thought the boxes weighed more than they really did. Those who sat in the more power ful way made better estimates of the boxes’ weight.

Finally, a number of participants were asked to remember a time in which they felt powerful or powerless. Those who thought of a powerful time gave the best answers for the weight of several boxes. Those who remembered moments of powerlessness repeatedly said the boxes were heavier than they were.

Ms. Lee believes feelings of lack of power in humans might have developed from prehistoric times. She says it might have been a way to keep early man from using up limited resources. But she says that today, these feelings might not be good for people at work.

32. From the first two paragraphs we can learn that this study _____ .

A. chooses patients with mental problems to do the test

B. divides the participants into several groups

C. is aimed at proving a popular theory wrong

D. is based on the way people think about themselves

33. Which of the following can describe a person as “being powerful” according to the researchers?

A. He feels stronger than he actually is.

B. He can get others to listen to what he says.

C. He thinks the boxes heavier than they really are.

D. He often compares himself with the people in power.

34. In the latter two tests, participants thought things heavier when they _____ .

A. sit in a relaxed way

B. sit in a powerless way

C. remember a time of their being happy

D. remember a time of their being powerful

35. According to the last paragraph, Ms. Lee may agree that _____ .

A. we were born to feel lack of power, so we can do nothing about it

B. we can perform very well at work even if we don’t feel powerful

C. we may fail to put every effort into our work for feeling powerless

D. we are sure to do everything well only if we seem to be powerful

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It is hard to know what babies want. They can’t talk, walk, or even point at what they’re thinking about. 36 And, compared to adults, they develop these skills quickly. People have a hard time learning new languages as they grow older, but infants have the ability to learn any language easily.

For a long time, scientists have tried to explain how such young children can learn complicated(复杂的) grammatical rules and sounds of a language. 37 This new information might eventually help kids with learning problems as well as adults who want to learn new languages. It might even help scientists who are trying to design computers that can communicate like people do.

Most babies go “goo goo” and “ma ma” by 6 months of age. 38 For decades, scientists have wondered how the brains of young children figure out how to communicate using language. With the help from new technologies and research strategies, scientists are now finding that babies begin life with the ability to learn any language.

They get into contact with other people, listen to what they say and watch their movements very closely. 39 Studies show that, up to about 6 months of age, babies can recognize all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world.

There are about 6,000 sounds that are spoken in languages around the globe, but not every language uses every sound. For example, while the Swedish language has 16 vowel sounds, English uses 8 vowel sounds, and Japanese uses just 5. Adults can hear only the sounds used in the languages they speak fluently. To a native Japanese speaker, for example, the letters R and L sound the same. 40

A. Children don’t respond to this kind of sound.

B. Most children speak in full sentences by age 3.

C. A baby’s brain focuses on the most common sounds.

D. That is why they quickly master the languages they hear often.

E. So a Japanese speaker cannot tell “row” from “low”, or “rake” from “lake”.

F. Yet newborns begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking

G. Now, researchers are knowing about what’s happening in the brains of the youngest language learners.
