Psychologists take opposing views of how external re wards, from warm praise to old cash, affect motivat ion and creativity. Behaviorists, who study the rela tion between actions and, argue that rewards can im prove performance at work and school. Some other re searchers who study various aspects of mental life, maintain those rewards often destroy creativity bye ncouraging dependence on approval and gifts from oth ers. The latter view has gained many supporters, especially among educators. But the careful use of small monetary rewards sparks in grade-school childre n suggesting that properly presented inducements inde ed aid inventiveness, according to a study in the June Journal Personality and Social Psychology.

“If they know they're working for a reward and ca n focus on a relatively challenging task, they show the most creativity,”says Robert Esenberger of t he University of Delaware in Newark. “But it's eas y to kill creativity by giving rewards for poor pe rformance or creating too much anticipation for rewa

rds.”

A teacher who continually draws attention to rewards or who hands out high grades for ordinary achieve ment ends up with uninspired students, Esenberger ho lds. As an example of the latter point, he notes growing efforts at major universities to tighten gra ding standards and restore falling grades.

In earlier grades, the use of so-called token econo mics, in which students handle challenging problems and receive performance-based points toward valued re wards, shows promise in raising effort and creativit y, the Delaware psychologist claims. 1. Psychologists are divided with regard to their attitudes toward ____. A) the choice between spiritual encouragement and monetary rewards

B) the appropriate amount of external rewards C) th e study of relationship between actions and

D) the effects of external rewards on students' per formance

2. What is the view held by many educators concern ing external rewards for students A) They approve o f external rewards. B) They don't think external re

wards. C) They have doubts about external rewards.

D) They believe external rewards can motivate small children, but not college students. 3. According t o the result of the study mentioned in the passage , what should educators do to stimulate motivation and creativity A) Give rewards for performances whic h deserve them. B) Always promise rewards.

C) Assign tasks which are not very challenging.

D) Be more lenient to students when mistakes are m ade.

4. It can be inferred from the passage that major universities are trying to tighten their grading s tandards because they believe ____.

A) rewarding poor performance may kill the creativit y of students’B) punishment is more effective tha n rewarding

C) failing uninspired students helps improve their o verall academic standards D) discouraging the student s anticipation for easy rewards is matter of urgenc y 5.Which of the following facts about “token eco nomics”is not correct A) Students are assigned ch allenging tasks. B) Rewards are given for good perf

ormances.

C) Students are evaluated according to the effort t hey put into the task. D) With token economics, st udents’creativity can be enhanced.

根据文章第一句话“Psychologists take opposing views of how external re wards, from warm praise to old cash, affect mot ivation and creativity”可知,心理学家的分歧在于来自外界的奖励对学生的积极性和创造性究竟有什么影响,故选项D正确. 2. C

从文中第四段可知,许多大学之所以严格考试的评分标准,是因为“A teacher ... who hands out high grades for ordi nary achievement ends up with uninspired students”。

Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of p eople than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that th

ere are more different ways of looking at things p resent in the first kind of society. There are mor e ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more g roups and organizations with different beliefs. In a ddition, there is

usually a greater worldly interest and greater toler ance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of li fe to decision. In a society where people are quit e similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. A nd although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.

Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the m aterial aspects of the culture than in the non-mate rial, for example, in technology rather than in val ues; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic a nd less emotional aspects of society than in their

opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the cultur e rather than in strange elements.

Furthermore, social change is easier if it is g radual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one w ith sharp dichotomies. This is one reason why chang e has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts. passage is mainly discussing __________ . necessity of social change

To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonalds. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging.

1.Passage One Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but regardless of whether it is or isn’t –we won’t do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed. Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,” as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don’t know enough to relieve global warming, and –without major technological breakthroughs—we can’t do much about it. From 2003 to 2050, the world’s population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, CO2) will be 42% higher in 2050. but that’s too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn the world’s poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else‘s living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050. No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show they’re “doing something.” Consider the Kyoto Protocol It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn’t. But it hasn’t reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories (签字国) didn’t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it. The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it’s really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering problem, we’re helpless. 57. What is said about global warming in the first paragraph? A) It may not prove an environmental crisis at all. B) It is an issue requiring world wide commitments. C) Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it. D) Very little will be done to bring it under control. 58. According to the author’s understanding, what is Al Gore’s view on global warming? A) It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of. B) It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences. C) It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized. D) It is an area we actually have little knowledge about. 59. Green house emissions will more than double by 2050 because of _______. A) economic growth B) the widening gap between the rich and poor C) wasteful use of energy D) the rapid advances of science and technology

(14) Among the more colorful characters of Leadville’s golden age were H.A.W.Tabor and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as “Baby Doe”. Their history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen. “Great deposits of lead are sure to be found here.” he said. As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville’s fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco.『It was his custom to “grubstake” prospective miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or“grub”, while they looked for ore, in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered.』①He did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value. Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were persistent, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won’t

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyse and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher. Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of obergrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseaed or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but itis a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the desease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurs and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts yu make will bleed. If this does happen,it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1.Pruning should be done to ______. a.make the tree grow taller
