It was a lovely day and Stella was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy approached her son and pushed him to the ground.

“I?d watched him for a little while and my son was the fifth child he?d shoved,” she says. “I went over to them, picked up my son, turned to the boy and said, firmly, …No, we don?t push”. What happened next was unexpected. “The boy?s mother ran toward me,” Stella says, “I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for disciplining her child . Was I supposed to sit back while her kid did whatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?

Getting your own children to play nice is difficult enough. Dealing with other people?s children has become a minefield.

“Kids aren?t all raised the same,” agrees Professor Naomi White of Monash University. “But there is still an idea that they?re the possessions of the parents. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you?re saying that my child is behaving inappropriately, then that?s somehow a criticism(批评)of me.”

In those circumstances, it?s difficult to know whether to approach the child directly or the parent first. There are two schools of thought.

“I?d go to the child first,”says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. Usually a quiet reminder that …we don?t do that here? is enough. Kids have finely tuned antennae(直觉)for how to behave in different setting. ” He points out bringing it up with the parent first may make them feel overlooked, which could caused problems. Of course, approaching the children first can bring its own overlooked, which could cause problems. Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too. This is why White recommends that you approach the parents first. “Raise your concerns with the parents if they?re there and ask them to deal with it.,” she says.

Asked how to approach a parent in this situation, psychologist Meredith Fuller answers “Explain your needs as well as stressing the importance of the friendship. Begin your remarks with something like …I know you?ll think I?m silly but in my house I don?t want…?” He doesn?t believe that we should be afraid of dealing with other people?s kids. “Look at kids that aren?t your own as a potential minefield,”he says. He recommends that we don?t stay silent over inappropriate behavior, particularly with regular visitors.

60.What did Stella do after the young boy pushed her son to the ground?

A.She made an apology to his mother.

B.She took her own boy away angrily.

C.She shouted to the boy to discipline him.

D.She told him his behavior was unacceptable.

61.What does the author say about dealing with other people?s children?

A.It?s important not to hurt them in any way.

B.It?s no use trying to stop their wrongdoing.

C.It?s advisable to treat them as one?s own kids.

D.It?s possible for one to get into lots of trouble.

62.According to professor Naomi White, what will the parents probably do when other people find fault with their kids?

A.They will feel hurt as well.

B.They will scold their kids.

C.They will lose control of themselves.

D.They will defend their child successfully.

63.According to Andre Fuller, what should one do when seeing other people?s kids misbehave?

A.Express dissatisfaction to their parents politely.

B.Make comments on inappropriate behavior.

C.Talk to the kids directly in a mild way.

D.Stress the importance of friendship.

Alone in the wilderness. Nothing but jungle. A world of shadow with the rays of light falling

Like blonde hair from the crowns of the giant trees. Jungle in the midday sun. Everything motionless . Not a sound from sky or earth. Complete silence. Only some coconuts falling, at long intervals, very far away. The world reduced to the soft touch of cool grass along my naked back, and a sweet smell of rich soil and vegetation. Stretched out with closed eyes beside my heavy burden of fruit and firewood, I enjoyed the feeling of fresh blood streaming through every part of my body and fresh jungle air filling every corner of my lungs.

Resting motionless, I could see the sun through my closed eyelids, alone in the sky, as lonely

as I, and as motionless and silent as everything else. The earth had surely stopped turning and somewhere on this planet there was supposed to be roaring traffic in busy streets. What a crazy, unbelievable thought!

Another coconut fell, to make the world come to a complete standstill. I had to roll over onto my stomach to feel that at least I could move and make noises. Then I found company. A little brown ant was struggling to find its way with a bit of dry straw through the jungle of leaves and grass below my nose. I wondered if I could give the little fellow a lift with its burden, but it showed not the slightest sign of tiredness and struggled on with all six legs, head first or head last, waving its feelers energetically as if the trip had just started. Who ever saw a tired ant? Tiredness, disagreeable tiredness, is restricted to hunted animals, slaves and modern man . It is as great an effort for an office clerk to walk five blocks with a loaded brief-case as it is for a jungle-dweller to cross a valley with a goat on his back. It is as hard to get up and climb or run when you have been seated for years as it is to get up and walk when you have been in bed for months. The body is

strange. Spare it, and you get really tired for almost nothing; use it, and almost nothing makes you really tired.

I rose to my feet. I had heard a horse neighing down in the valley. Above me, on the open highland plains, there were wild horses. But down in the valley there was never a horse unless there was a man on it. Somebody was making his way up the valley and my wife was alone. 64.The author mentions coconuts? falling to .

A.show his loneliness B.add beauty to the jungle

C.express his love of nature D.stress the absolute silence

65.How does the author feel about the ant?

A.He admired its attitude toward work.

B.He was amazed at its tireless efforts.

C.He showed sympathy for the little ant.

D.He was content to have it as a companion.

66.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author would probably .

A.work harder than before B.talk to the man on the horse

C.make his way home D.stay in the valley

67.We can learn from the passage that the author .

A.enjoyed being alone B.had an unforgettable adventure

C.missed his busy life in the city D.experienced a word of quietness

Consumers are being confused and misled by the environmental claims(声称)made by household products, according to a“green labeling(标签)”study published by Consumers International Friday.

Among the report’s more outrageous(令人无法容忍的)finding—a German fertilizer described itself as“earthworm friendly”,a brand of flour said it was“non-polluting”.and a British toilet paper claimed to be“environmentally friendlier”.

The study was writt en and researched by Britain?s National Consumer Council(NCC)for lobby group Consumers International. It was supported by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.“While many good and useful claims are being made,it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring that shoppers are well informed about the environmental influence of products they buy,”said Consumers International director Anna Fielder. The 10-country study examined product packaging in Britain,Western Europe,Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average. The report focused on claims made by specific products, such as detergent(洗涤剂)and garden products. It did not test the claims, but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO).

Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2,000 products and found many unclear or too misleading to meet ISO standards.

“Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158.Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims, while paints were third on out list with 73.The high numbers show how confusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misleading,”said report researcher Philip Page.

The ISO labeling standards ban unclear or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as“environmentally friendly’’and“non-polluting”cannot be proved.“What we

are now pushing for is to have multinational corporations meet the standards set by the ISO,”said Page.

68.According to the passage, the NCC found it outrageous that .A.all the products claim to meet ISO standards

B.the claims made by products are often unclear or misleading

C.consumers would believe many of the manufactures’claims

D.few products actually prove to be environment friendly

69.As indicated in this passage, with so many good claims, the consumers

A.are becoming more cautious about the products they are going to buy

B.are still not willing to pay more for products with green labeling

C.are becoming more aware of the effects different products have on the environment

D.still do not know the exact influence of different products off the environment

70.The purpose of the study carried out by Britain’s NCC is to .A.find out how many claims made by products fail to meet environmental standards

B.inform the consumers of the environmental influence of the products they buy

C.examine claims made by products against ISO standards

D.revise the guidelines set by the International Standards Organization

71.It can be inferred from the passage that the lobby group Consumer International wants to

A.help product labeling satisfy ISO requirements

B.prove the effects of non—polluting products

C.see all household products meet environmental standards

D.warn consumers of the danger of so—called green products

Throw out the bottles and boxes of drugs in your house.A new theory suggests that medicine

could be bad for your health. This new theory argues that

healing(the process of becoming healthy and strong again)is at our

fingertips:we can be healthy by doing Reiki on a regular basis.

Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be

trusted since it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that

there is no need for spiritual methods such as Reiki,Yoga,Tai

Chi.These waste our time, something that is quite precious in our

material world. There is medicine that can kill our pain and x-rays

that show us our broken bones. We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some “everyday complaints ”such as back pains, headaches, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin;when you cannot sleep, you take X-ray without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you become dependent on them;you cannot sleep without them.We pay huge amounts of money and but never get better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Reiki to yourself, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. Also, there are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.

They also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated

without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Reiki make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair and weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take.Actually, instead of drugs which arc expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overcome the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries.

Some people may still hold that in our material world, everything depends on time. How would it be possible to find time to do Reiki? In fact,Reiki does not require more than 15 minutes

of our time.It is less time consuming than medicine if we think of all the time we spend taking medicine for some complaints and taking some more for the side effects as well.

72.The author's attitude towards Reiki is .

A.uninterested B.serious C.positive D.doubtful 73.Which statement does the passage lead you to believe?

A.Reiki will soon become the most popular exercise around the world.

B.Reiki is an effective treatment but not scientifically explained.

C.Reiki can make people less dependent on drugs.

D.Reiki is a kind of cheap drug but works well.

74.How many advantages of Reiki are mentioned in the last two paragraphs?

A.One.B.Three.C.Five.D.Seven.75.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.A New Way of Treating Illness

B.Health and Healing at Your Fingers

C.The Advantages and Disadvantages of Reiki

D.The Advantages and Disadvantages of Medicine

第一节情景作文(20分)

One possible version :

Dear Harry,

How are things going with you? Today I?m writing to you about the changes that have taken place in our life since the policy “Reduce unnecessary burden for more effective learning”was carried out.

Classes used to begin very early in the morning so we had to go to school without breakfast, which more or less affected our health and studies in class. But now we get up at half past 6 and have enough time to have breakfast. Now we have an hour for sports each day, We can take whatever exercise or sport we like. After that we feel relaxed and very energetic in class. Apart form that, we also have a variety of out-of=class activities such as going mountain climbing, or holding an art festival in which gifted students sing and dance or play a drams. Furthermore, as unnecessary burden is reduced, we have less homework to do in the evening, so as a result, we have time to do whatever we are interested in, such as surfing the Internet for useful information ,playing some computer games for relaxation. No longer do we have to stay up late, and we can go to bed at 11.

Oh it?s time for bed, so I have to stop here. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours

One possible version :

A gardener is cutting the bushes with a pair of big scissors. The bushes under his scissors look neat, tidy and in good order but they can never grow up into their full shape with wide green leaves.

I think these threes can be compared to us young children. Trees w ill grow up in the future, some tall and some short. Tall trees can provide people with cool shade and short ones can help beautify our environment. Similarly, we can be brought up to play different roles in society. The world needs variety. Variety is beauty. I hope teenagers can be given more freedom in school. We can do and learn what we really need and are interested in. Only difference can make our world colorful and enjoyable.
